AFTER BEING EXILED: MY SISTER AND I BUILD HIDDEN CIVILIZATIONS
Chapter 54 - 53: Route Key One Came Knocking
Chapter 54: Chapter 53: Route Key One Came Knocking
Fifty-nine seconds was not enough time to prepare for an unknown man crossing worlds through an ancient route the Game Master desperately wanted.
It was, however, enough time to point several unreasonable weapons at the place he would arrive.
Arin considered that acceptable.
"EVE."
"Founder."
"Arrival coordinates."
A map appeared.
Arin stared at it.
Then stared harder.
"That’s here."
"Correct."
"How here?"
A glowing point appeared approximately twelve meters behind him.
A-01 turned immediately.
Guardian drones rotated.
Tavian, still sitting on the road after Player Six’s route had been severed, looked over his shoulder.
"Founder."
"Yes?"
"Should I move?"
"Probably."
Tavian stood.
His left leg immediately buckled.
A-01 caught him.
The black eye flickered.
PLAYER SIX:
RECOVERY MODE.
Arin looked at it.
"Can you control yourself?"
"Mostly."
"Percentage?"
Tavian frowned.
"That’s a strange question."
"Answer."
"Maybe seventy?"
"Good enough. Move behind A-01."
Tavian did not argue.
Daniel appeared on a nearby emergency terminal.
"Arin, Route Key One shouldn’t be able to establish an independent crossing."
"Yet it is."
"I can see that."
"Then update your assumptions."
Daniel looked annoyed.
Good.
The countdown continued.
00:41.
Victor’s voice came through the secure channel.
"We’re three minutes away."
"Stay outside the district."
"Why?"
"Player fragments."
A pause.
"Right."
Selene and Aisha were still with him.
Bringing three Player One functions close to Player Six while an unknown Route Holder arrived seemed unnecessary.
Arin had enough unnecessary problems.
"EVE, Family Citadel?"
"Secure."
"Lyra?"
"Safe."
"Luna?"
"Safe."
"Mira?"
A pause.
"Mira is attempting to leave."
Arin closed his eyes.
"Why?"
Her voice entered.
"Because I want to see him."
"No."
"But—"
"No."
"I know he’s not dangerous."
"You thought the door was a mouth earlier."
"That one was dangerous."
"And this one?"
Mira paused.
"It’s weird."
"Excellent reason to stay where you are."
Lyra’s voice appeared.
"I’ll stop her."
"Thank you."
Mira protested somewhere in the background.
Arin ignored it.
00:27.
The air behind him changed.
No dramatic explosion.
No black wound in the sky.
Instead, a vertical golden line appeared.
Thin.
Perfectly straight.
From road to several meters above it.
A-01 raised its spear.
Drones locked on.
Arin activated his armor.
The golden line widened.
Not tearing space.
Opening it.
Like a door.
For half a second Arin saw the other side.
Rain.
Concrete.
A road.
A convenience store sign.
Cars.
Modern streetlights.
Earth.
Arin froze.
He knew Earth when he saw it.
Daniel did too.
"Impossible."
"You use that word too much."
"Arin, that is Earth."
"I noticed."
The stranger stood beneath an umbrella.
Ordinary black jacket.
Dark trousers.
Sneakers.
Maybe thirty.
A grocery bag hung from one hand.
He looked at the armed drones.
Then at A-01.
Then at Arin.
Finally at his grocery bag.
"Should’ve left the milk."
Arin stared.
The man stepped through.
The golden doorway closed behind him.
ROUTE KEY ONE:
ARRIVAL COMPLETE.
Silence.
Rainwater dripped from his jacket onto the Elysium road.
He looked around.
"So."
His gaze moved across towers, drones, A-01 and Tavian.
"This is Elysium."
Arin did not lower his weapon.
"Name."
"Adrian Cole."
"Earth?"
"Obviously."
"Year?"
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"Twenty forty-seven."
Daniel’s projection went completely still.
Arin caught it.
"What?"
Daniel whispered:
"Six years."
Arin understood.
Noah’s records came from 2041.
Adrian came from Earth in 2047.
Earth was still there.
More importantly, time between worlds was not as simple as they assumed.
Arin looked back at Adrian.
"System?"
"No."
"Player?"
"No."
"Founder?"
"No."
"Administrator?"
Adrian smiled.
"No."
"Then what are you?"
"Currently?"
He lifted the grocery bag.
"Annoyed."
A-01’s spear moved slightly.
Adrian looked at it.
"That thing has no sense of humor, does it?"
"Some."
"Concerning."
Arin’s expression remained flat.
"Why are you here?"
Adrian looked at him.
"Because you opened the Network from the wrong side."
"I didn’t open it."
"You absolutely did."
"I used Player Six’s route."
"Exactly."
Adrian sighed.
"People keep treating roads like they’re one-way."
Arin almost liked him.
That was suspicious.
"Route Key One."
Adrian’s expression changed.
Barely.
"You saw it."
"Yes."
"Good."
"Give it to me."
Adrian laughed.
"No."
A-01’s spear lowered another centimeter.
Adrian looked toward it.
"Is that the negotiation protocol?"
"No."
"What is?"
"Me asking twice."
Adrian looked back at him.
"And after that?"
"Depends."
For several seconds they stared at each other.
Then Adrian smiled.
"You’re definitely Fourteen."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"How do you know me?"
"I don’t."
"You knew my number."
"Everyone on my side knows Fourteen."
Daniel spoke through the terminal.
"What side?"
Adrian turned.
The grocery bag slipped from his fingers.
A carton hit the road.
He didn’t notice.
His face had gone pale.
"Daniel?"
Daniel stared.
"Do I know you?"
Adrian stepped closer.
A-01 blocked him.
Adrian stopped.
"You shouldn’t be conscious."
Daniel’s expression hardened.
"Apparently I am."
Arin glanced at him.
Daniel frowned.
"Don’t."
Adrian stared for several seconds.
Then whispered:
"So they reconstructed your identity layer."
"Partially."
"How much?"
"Enough."
"No."
Adrian’s expression became grim.
"If you’re talking, it’s already too much."
Arin stepped slightly between their lines of sight.
"Explain."
Adrian looked at him.
"Daniel Park is dead."
Daniel said nothing.
"We know."
"No."
Adrian pointed at the screen.
"You know his body died."
Silence.
"His identity wasn’t supposed to survive."
Daniel’s face changed.
Arin noticed.
"You knew?"
Daniel looked away.
"Daniel."
"I suspected."
"Bad habit."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"You really trust that thing?"
"No."
Daniel looked offended.
Arin continued.
"I listen."
"Better."
Adrian crouched and retrieved his groceries.
Tavian suddenly spoke.
"Founder."
Arin turned.
His black eye was widening.
"Problem?"
"Player Six recognizes him."
Adrian froze.
Arin looked back.
"How?"
Tavian swallowed.
"I don’t know."
Player Six took partial control.
His voice doubled.
UNREGISTERED NETWORK ANOMALY DETECTED.
Adrian’s expression hardened.
"Turn that off."
Arin almost laughed.
"Working on it."
"No. Now."
"Can’t."
Adrian stepped backward.
For the first time since arriving, he looked afraid.
ROUTE KEY ONE HOLDER CONFIRMED.
Every black System line on Tavian’s body lit.
PRIORITY ACQUISITION TARGET.
Arin’s Sanctuary reacted.
White lines wrapped around Tavian.
He gritted his teeth.
"I refuse."
HOST CONFLICT.
Player Six attempted to move.
Tavian’s leg shifted.
Then stopped.
"I said..."
His blue eye returned.
"...no."
Good.
Adrian stared.
"What did you do to him?"
"Nothing."
"That’s clearly something."
"The Network made him Player Six."
Adrian’s face became cold.
"When?"
"Today."
"And he can refuse commands?"
"Sometimes."
"How?"
"Long explanation."
Adrian looked at Tavian.
Then Arin.
Then the white Sanctuary field.
"That’s not Player Two architecture."
"No."
"Founder system?"
"Partially."
"Civilization Authority?"
"Rejected."
Adrian blinked.
"You rejected Civilization Authority?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Didn’t like the terms."
Adrian stared.
Then started laughing.
Not mockery.
Actual laughter.
A-01 looked at Arin.
"Threat response unclear."
"Same."
Adrian eventually stopped.
"Cael would’ve liked you."
Arin’s expression changed.
"You knew Cael?"
"No."
"Then?"
"I know his messages."
"Where?"
Adrian tapped his chest.
"Route One."
Arin looked at him.
"Show me."
"No."
"Second request."
Adrian smiled.
"So now we reach the interesting part."
Then EVE interrupted.
"Founder."
"What?"
"External network activity increasing."
"Player Six?"
"No."
Arin’s expression hardened.
"Source?"
"Unknown."
Adrian immediately stopped smiling.
"How much time?"
EVE paused.
"Until what?"
"Until the Network realizes I crossed."
Tavian’s black eye flared.
Adrian looked at him.
"Never mind."
He dropped the grocery bag again.
This time deliberately.
"Too late."
He reached beneath his jacket.
A-01 moved.
Arin raised one hand.
"Wait."
Adrian pulled out something that looked painfully ordinary.
A smartphone.
Old.
Cracked screen.
No futuristic technology.
No magic.
He tapped it.
The screen showed one thing.
A golden door.
"Route Key One isn’t an object," Adrian said.
Arin stared.
"What is it?"
"A permission."
"To what?"
"Leave."
Silence.
Daniel’s expression changed.
"Leave what?"
Adrian looked at him.
"The game."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Explain."
"Every Route Key does something different."
That was new.
"Fourteen isn’t just a coordinate fragment."
Adrian pointed at Arin.
"Fourteen finds the Administrator Key."
Arin said nothing.
"Seven survives incompatible routes."
Mira.
That fit.
"Three identifies Network anchors."
Royal Guild.
Aisha had suspected the same.
Adrian raised his phone.
"One exits the Network."
Victor’s voice came through.
"Exit to where?"
Adrian looked toward the sky.
"Earth."
Silence.
Arin looked toward the place where the golden doorway had closed.
"You can go back."
"Yes."
"Any time?"
"No."
"Cost?"
Adrian smiled faintly.
"Now you’re asking useful questions."
"Cost."
"One crossing creates a trace."
Arin understood.
"That’s how the Game Master finds you."
"Yes."
"Then why come?"
Adrian looked at him.
"Because you touched the Administrator route."
"Not intentionally."
"Doesn’t matter."
Adrian’s expression became serious.
"Route One has been waiting for Fourteen to become active."
"Why?"
"Because Cael left an instruction."
Arin stared.
Adrian unlocked his phone.
A text file appeared.
Old.
Simple.
No System interface.
The first line read:
TO ROUTE ONE:
IF FOURTEEN SURVIVES LONG ENOUGH TO REJECT THE THRONE, FIND HIM.
Arin went still.
Daniel stared.
Adrian continued scrolling.
DO NOT TRUST THE ADMINISTRATOR.
DO NOT TRUST PLAYER ONE.
DO NOT TRUST ME.
Arin almost smiled.
That sounded more sensible than most ancient messages.
Then:
FOURTEEN MUST NEVER COLLECT ALL ROUTE KEYS.
Silence.
Arin’s smile vanished.
Adrian looked at him.
"That’s why I’m not giving you One."
Arin stared at the message.
"Why?"
"The rest explains."
Adrian scrolled.
THE FOURTEEN KEYS DO NOT ONLY REVEAL THE ADMINISTRATOR KEY.
TOGETHER, THEY REBUILD ITS ACCESS PATH.
WHOEVER ASSEMBLES ALL FOURTEEN DOES NOT FIND THE KEY.
THEY OPEN THE VAULT HOLDING IT.
Daniel’s face became grim.
Arin immediately understood.
"And everyone else can follow."
Adrian nodded.
"Game Master."
"Yes."
"Seraphine."
"Yes."
"The outside civilization."
Adrian hesitated.
"Especially them."
That was unpleasant.
Arin looked toward his Route Fourteen signal.
All this time everyone had been treating the Keys like treasure pieces.
Collect fourteen.
Find Administrator Key.
Simple.
Too simple.
"Then destroy the Keys."
Adrian shook his head.
"Can’t."
"Seven kills System hosts."
"Still can’t."
"Why?"
"Because they’re not objects."
Arin remembered Adrian’s wording.
Permissions.
Functions.
Rules.
Adrian continued.
"Destroy the physical anchor and the permission relocates."
"To another host?"
"Usually."
"Can we deactivate them?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"That’s what Cael spent years trying to solve."
Arin looked toward Daniel.
"And Noah?"
Adrian’s expression changed.
"Noah wanted them assembled."
Daniel froze.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because Noah believed the Administrator Key was the only thing powerful enough to permanently destroy the Game Master."
Reasonable.
Dangerously reasonable.
Adrian continued.
"Cael disagreed."
"Because opening the vault would expose the Key."
"Exactly."
Two plans.
Assemble everything and gamble on gaining control first.
Or keep everything separated forever.
Arin disliked both.
Naturally.
"So they split."
"Eventually."
"Prime Fall?"
"Partly."
Daniel whispered:
"I don’t remember this."
Adrian looked toward him.
"That’s because your memory ends before the worst part."
Daniel went silent.
Arin looked at Adrian.
"What happened after?"
Before Adrian could answer, Tavian screamed.
His black eye expanded completely.
Sanctuary flared.
HOST REFUSAL OVERRIDDEN BY EMERGENCY NETWORK AUTHORITY.
Arin’s expression changed.
"Tavian!"
"I’m—"
His voice disappeared.
Player Six took control.
ROUTE ONE TRACE ACQUIRED.
Adrian swore.
The sky above Residential District Four turned black.
Not a portal.
A grid.
Millions of thin lines spread overhead.
Daniel shouted:
"Network containment!"
Adrian grabbed his phone.
"Everyone with a Player System needs to get away!"
Victor responded:
"We already are!"
"Farther!"
Arin looked toward EVE.
"Range?"
"Expanding."
"Purpose?"
Daniel answered.
"It’s not attacking."
Arin stared at the black grid.
"Then what?"
Adrian looked toward him.
"It’s preventing Route One from leaving."
Of course.
The Game Master had finally found an exit route from its own network.
It wasn’t going to let Adrian escape.
The black grid sealed the district.
Adrian’s phone flashed.
ROUTE ONE:
EXIT DENIED.
His face hardened.
"That’s new."
Arin looked at him.
"You can enter but not leave."
"Currently."
"Can it hold you?"
"If the containment finishes."
"Time?"
Adrian checked.
"About six minutes."
Arin looked toward Tavian.
Player Six remained active.
Sanctuary still wrapped him.
The Game Master was using him as the local anchor.
"Then we break the anchor."
Adrian immediately shook his head.
"If you kill Player Six, the function jumps hosts."
"Wasn’t planning to kill him."
"You have another method?"
Arin looked at Tavian.
"Maybe."
He stepped forward.
A-01 followed.
Player Six raised Tavian’s hand.
Black interfaces formed.
DO NOT APPROACH.
Arin kept walking.
WARNING.
"Not interested."
HOST TERMINATION WILL TRIGGER NODE TRANSFER.
"I know."
SANCTUARY CANNOT REMOVE PLAYER SIX.
"I know."
Player Six hesitated.
Arin smiled faintly.
That hesitation mattered.
"You’re thinking like a System."
Daniel’s voice came through.
"Arin, what are you doing?"
"Fixing jurisdiction."
"What?"
Arin stopped in front of Tavian.
"Tavian became a Player after becoming an Elysium citizen."
"Yes."
"His citizenship came first."
"We established that."
"But I treated Player Six like a foreign authority occupying him."
Daniel paused.
"And?"
Arin looked toward the black eye.
"What if it isn’t?"
Adrian understood first.
"Oh."
Arin raised his Authority Band.
"Player Six."
LISTENING.
"You exist inside Tavian."
CORRECT.
"Tavian is an Elysium citizen."
CORRECT.
"Your host cannot be separated from you without harming him."
CORRECT.
Arin’s expression hardened.
"Then while you inhabit him, you operate inside Elysium jurisdiction."
The black eye flickered.
INVALID.
"Why?"
PLAYER NETWORK AUTHORITY SUPERSEDES LOCAL—
"No."
The System froze.
Arin continued.
"You can claim that."
White Covenant lines appeared beneath his feet.
"But Tavian never agreed."
HOST COMPATIBILITY—
"Not consent."
The Sanctuary field surged.
PRECEDENT DETECTED.
Good.
Arin continued.
"If Player Six wants to remain inside Tavian, it follows the same rules protecting Tavian."
Adrian stared.
"You’re trying to make the System a resident."
"Temporary."
"That’s insane."
"Useful?"
Adrian paused.
"Potentially."
Good.
EVE understood.
COVENANT REVIEW INITIATED.
ENTITY: PLAYER SIX.
RESIDENCE CONDITION:
INSEPARABLE FROM PROTECTED CITIZEN WITHOUT HOST HARM.
The black grid above them flickered.
CLASSIFICATION CONFLICT.
Arin waited.
PLAYER SIX:
EXTERNAL NETWORK NODE.
LOCAL RESIDENT FUNCTION.
DUAL STATUS DETECTED.
"Apply local protections."
TO TAVIAN?
"To both."
Daniel shouted:
"Arin!"
Arin ignored him.
The System processed.
PLAYER SIX GRANTED TEMPORARY NON-CITIZEN RESIDENT STATUS.
Tavian’s black eye widened.
Adrian started laughing again.
Arin looked toward the sky.
"Now apply Covenant restrictions."
NON-CONSENSUAL HARM AGAINST RESIDENTS:
PROHIBITED.
UNAUTHORIZED INFRASTRUCTURE CONTROL:
PROHIBITED.
FORCED RECRUITMENT:
PROHIBITED.
EXTERNAL HOSTILE NETWORK ASSISTANCE:
PROHIBITED.
The black grid shattered.
Not slowly.
Instantly.
The Game Master’s local anchor vanished because Player Six’s own host environment now classified cooperation as a violation.
Tavian collapsed.
Arin caught him.
His black eye flickered wildly.
Then stabilized.
Blue returned.
Tavian breathed.
"Did..."
He coughed.
"...did you just make the parasite renting space in my head obey city law?"
Arin considered.
"Basically."
Tavian laughed weakly.
"I hate this city."
"Understandable."
Adrian stared at Arin.
Daniel stared too.
EVE finally spoke.
"Founder."
"What?"
"An unexpected development has occurred."
"Naturally."
DISTRIBUTED CIVILIZATION PATH UPDATED.
FIRST NON-HUMAN SYSTEM ENTITY PLACED UNDER COVENANT JURISDICTION.
NEW GOVERNANCE CONCEPT DISCOVERED:
SYSTEM PERSONHOOD REVIEW.
Arin closed his eyes.
"No."
EVE paused.
"Founder?"
"Later."
"Understood."
Adrian was still staring.
"What?"
He shook his head.
"Cael was wrong."
Arin’s expression changed.
"About?"
"He thought Fourteen would have to choose between Noah’s plan and his."
"Assemble the Keys or scatter them forever."
"Yes."
Adrian looked toward the white Covenant lines disappearing beneath Arin’s feet.
"But you’re not doing either."
"No."
"What are you doing?"
Arin looked toward House Elysium.
Thousands of people lived there.
Lyra.
Luna.
Mira.
Elara.
Lucan.
Tavian.
Even Player Six now existed under rules it had never expected to obey.
"Finding a third option."
Adrian smiled.
Then his phone vibrated.
He looked down.
The smile disappeared.
"What?"
Adrian turned the screen toward Arin.
ROUTE ONE EXIT AVAILABLE.
EARTH CONNECTION:
UNSTABLE.
EMERGENCY RETURN WINDOW:
04:00.
Arin frowned.
"You’re leaving?"
"I have to."
"Why?"
"Because the trace reached Earth."
Silence.
Daniel’s face went pale.
Adrian continued.
"The Game Master knows Route One connects back."
Arin looked toward the place where Adrian had arrived.
"And?"
Adrian’s expression became grim.
"And if I don’t close the Earth-side anchor..."
The golden line began forming again.
Rain appeared beyond it.
But something had changed.
On Earth, people were running.
Cars had stopped.
The convenience store windows were shattered.
Above the modern city—
a black grid was forming in the sky.
Arin stared.
Adrian whispered:
"...the game spreads home."
The doorway widened.
Then Arin’s Authority Band produced a notification he had never expected to see.
NEW CIVILIZATION DETECTED.
ORIGIN:
EARTH.
NETWORK EXPOSURE:
0.01%.
The number changed.
0.02%.
Then:
0.03%.
Adrian stepped toward the doorway.
Arin caught his arm.
"How do we stop it?"
Adrian looked at him.
"We?"
Arin stared through the golden door at Earth.
At cars.
Concrete.
Streetlights.
A world he had believed was forever beyond reach.
His first home.
Adrian followed his gaze.
"You can’t come."
"Why?"
"Route One only authorizes its holder."
Arin released him.
"Then go."
Adrian nodded.
He stepped through.
Then stopped on the Earth side and looked back.
"Fourteen."
"What?"
"Don’t collect the Keys."
Arin said nothing.
Adrian continued.
"And whatever Noah tells you..."
His expression hardened.
"...remember that Noah was Player Two before you."
The golden door began closing.
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian smiled bitterly.
"It means he was designed to decide whether the game deserved to continue."
The gap narrowed.
"But nobody ever asked who decided whether he deserved to make that choice."
The door closed.
Route One vanished.
For one second, there was silence.
Then Arin’s Authority Band flashed.
EARTH NETWORK EXPOSURE:
0.07%.
Another message appeared.
Not from Adrian.
Not from the Game Master.
Not from EVE.
From Earth.
UNKNOWN CROSS-WORLD SIGNAL RECEIVED.
SOURCE IDENTIFICATION:
ELYSIUM FOUNDATION FACILITY — EARTH.
Arin stared.
Daniel stopped moving.
Tavian looked confused.
EVE whispered:
"Founder..."
Arin read the final line.
FACILITY STATUS:
ACTIVE.
MESSAGE:
FOUNDER FOURTEEN, DO NOT RETURN TO EARTH.
WE ALREADY HAVE A FOUNDER HERE.
Arin’s expression went completely still.
House Elysium had not begun in this world.
Some part of it had existed on Earth all along.
And apparently—
Arin was not the only Founder still alive.
