Chapter 55: Chapter 54: The Founder Who Stayed on Earth

For several seconds, Arin simply stared at the message.

FOUNDER FOURTEEN, DO NOT RETURN TO EARTH.

WE ALREADY HAVE A FOUNDER HERE.

No one around him spoke.

Tavian was still sitting on the road, breathing heavily after Player Six had been forced under Covenant restrictions. A-01 stood beside him. Daniel’s projection remained frozen on the nearest terminal.

Even EVE had gone quiet.

That was rare.

Arin finally looked up.

"EVE."

"Founder."

"Confirm source."

"Attempting."

"Not attempting. Confirm."

A pause.

Then multiple screens activated around Residential District Four.

Lines of data appeared too quickly for Tavian to follow.

Daniel followed them easily.

His expression became worse with every second.

EVE answered:

"Signal origin is Earth."

"Location."

"Unknown."

"Country?"

"Unknown."

"Facility?"

"Designation matches archived Elysium naming conventions."

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

"Archived from where?"

"That is the problem."

Of course.

"Explain."

EVE’s voice lowered.

"I possess no record of an Earth-based Elysium Foundation facility."

Daniel stepped toward the screen.

"I do."

Arin turned.

"Start talking."

Daniel stared at the signal signature.

"It shouldn’t still exist."

"Again."

He looked at Arin.

"The original Player Network wasn’t built by two people in a random laboratory."

Arin’s expression did not change.

"Noah and you."

"We were project leads."

"Who funded it?"

Daniel hesitated.

That alone answered enough.

Arin’s eyes cooled.

"Daniel."

"A private research consortium."

"Name."

Daniel looked toward EVE.

"Elysium Foundation."

Silence.

Tavian blinked.

"Wait."

No one looked at him.

He continued anyway.

"House Elysium existed on Earth?"

Daniel shook his head.

"Not House Elysium."

Arin caught the distinction.

"Foundation."

"Yes."

"What did it do?"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Officially? Climate modeling. Artificial intelligence. neurological interfaces. Disaster-response systems. Closed-environment habitat research."

Victor’s voice came through the remote channel.

"That’s an oddly convenient list."

Daniel ignored him.

Arin did not.

"Unofficially?"

Daniel was silent for too long.

Then:

"Cross-world contact."

There it was.

Arin looked toward the place where Route One had vanished.

"Before the Player Network?"

"Yes."

"How much before?"

"Years."

"How many?"

"At least eleven."

Aisha spoke through Victor’s channel.

"So Earth found another world first."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

That answer changed the room.

Arin narrowed his eyes.

"Then what?"

Daniel looked directly at him.

"Something found Earth."

Silence.

The words sat heavier than they should have.

Arin remembered the civilization beyond Final Elysium.

The one that took cities.

The one that had answered old routes.

"Same external civilization?"

"We never proved it."

"Meaning you suspected."

"Yes."

EVE interrupted.

"Founder."

"What?"

"The Earth signal is requesting handshake."

Arin’s expression hardened instantly.

"No."

Daniel snapped toward him.

"Wait."

Arin looked at him.

Daniel continued.

"Not every handshake is an invasion."

Arin stared.

Daniel sighed.

"Fair."

"Can we receive text without opening a route?"

EVE processed.

"Yes."

"Do that."

"Confirmed."

A new message appeared.

EARTH ELYSIUM FOUNDATION:

PASSIVE CHANNEL ACCEPTED.

NO TRANSIT REQUESTED.

Good.

Then:

FOUNDER FOURTEEN CONFIRM IDENTITY.

Arin looked at it.

"How?"

Another line.

STATE FIRST COVENANT LAW.

Arin’s expression changed.

Only a limited number of people should know that.

EVE.

A-01.

Guardian Zero.

Seraphine.

Cael, perhaps.

Some of the old Founder systems.

And now someone on Earth.

Arin answered.

"No person under Elysium protection may be treated as property."

The channel went silent.

Then:

IDENTITY PROBABILITY:

98.7%.

ACCEPTABLE.

Victor laughed through the channel.

"Nice to know two percent of people apparently talk exactly like you."

Arin ignored him.

A new message appeared.

HELLO, FOURTEEN.

Then:

I AM FOUNDER NINE.

Daniel went still.

Arin did too.

"Cael was before me."

Daniel whispered:

"Thirteen."

"Yes."

"Founder Nine should be..."

He stopped.

"Dead?" Arin asked.

Daniel nodded.

The screen updated.

I AM NOT DEAD.

I AM ALSO NOT THE ORIGINAL FOUNDER NINE.

Arin stared.

"Of course."

Tavian looked at him.

"Founder?"

"Long story."

"Everything here is a long story."

Fair.

The Earth signal continued.

THIS DESIGNATION WAS INHERITED.

EARTH BRANCH NEVER STOPPED OPERATING.

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

Earth branch.

Not facility.

Branch.

"How many Elysium branches exist?"

The response came quickly.

UNKNOWN.

CONFIRMED:

EARTH.

ELYSIUM WORLD.

ONE LOST COLONY.

ONE UNVERIFIED ARK.

Arin’s expression hardened.

The story had just become larger again.

He did not appreciate it.

"Who created Elysium Foundation?"

A pause.

Longer this time.

Then:

THAT QUESTION IS WHY YOU MUST NOT RETURN TO EARTH.

Arin stared.

"Answer."

NOT OVER THIS CHANNEL.

"Why?"

BECAUSE THE GAME MASTER IS LISTENING.

Every screen around them flickered.

Daniel immediately turned.

"They’re right."

Arin looked at him.

"You detect it?"

"No."

"Then?"

Daniel pointed to the message timing.

"Look."

EVE expanded the packet history.

The Earth signal wasn’t arriving continuously.

It appeared in short bursts.

Each one used a slightly different route signature.

Arin understood.

"They’re moving the connection."

"Yes," Daniel said. "Frequency-hopping across cross-world routes."

Tavian blinked.

"I understood none of that."

Arin answered without looking away.

"They’re making it harder to track them."

"Ah."

The black eye in Tavian’s face suddenly twitched.

Player Six.

Tavian noticed too.

"I don’t like that."

Arin immediately stepped closer.

"Can you feel something?"

"Yes."

"What?"

Tavian closed his blue eye.

The black one remained open.

For several seconds, his breathing slowed.

Then his face changed.

"Searching."

Arin’s voice hardened.

"The Game Master?"

Tavian nodded.

"Not through me."

"How?"

"I can see... requests."

Daniel went rigid.

"What kind?"

"Network search requests."

Tavian swallowed.

"Earth."

Arin looked toward the communication screens.

"Can you block them?"

Player Six’s black eye flickered.

Tavian grimaced.

"Maybe."

"Your choice."

He looked at Arin.

Then laughed weakly.

"Founder, I have a thing in my head that tried to turn twelve thousand people into Players."

"Yes."

"And now you’re asking me if I want to use it to lie to the thing controlling it."

"Basically."

Tavian smiled.

"I absolutely want to."

Good.

He sat straighter.

"How?"

Arin looked toward EVE.

"Player Six is under Covenant restrictions."

"Correct."

"Does helping the Game Master locate Earth qualify as external hostile network assistance?"

A pause.

"Yes."

The black eye spasmed.

REQUEST CONFLICT DETECTED.

Tavian grinned.

"Oh, that’s satisfying."

Player Six attempted to display something.

NETWORK SEARCH DIRECTIVE:

TRACE ROUTE ONE.

TRACE EARTH.

PRIORITY—

The text disappeared.

ACTION PROHIBITED BY LOCAL COVENANT.

Tavian laughed.

Actually laughed.

"Do it again."

Arin almost smiled.

The Game Master issued another request.

EMERGENCY AUTHORITY OVERRIDE.

DENIED.

Another.

PLAYER NETWORK SUPERIOR JURISDICTION.

DISPUTED.

Tavian wiped blood from beneath his black eye.

"This is the best thing that’s happened to me all day."

A-01 looked toward him.

"You were converted into a hostile Network node."

"Exactly. Low competition."

Arin turned back toward Earth.

"Founder Nine."

The reply came after three seconds.

STILL HERE.

"Game Master is searching for you."

WE KNOW.

"Route One?"

ADRIAN IS ATTEMPTING TO COLLAPSE IT.

"Attempting?"

The pause that followed was not reassuring.

Then:

HE HAS FOUR MINUTES BEFORE LOCAL CONTAINMENT FAILS.

Arin’s jaw tightened.

"Can we help?"

NO.

"That’s rarely true."

YOU CANNOT CROSS ROUTE ONE.

"Didn’t ask to cross."

Silence.

Arin continued.

"Can Elysium reinforce the closure from this side?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Maybe."

The Earth signal answered before he could.

DO NOT CONNECT ELYSIUM SYSTEMS TO EARTH.

"Why?"

BECAUSE THAT IS HOW IT STARTED.

Everything stopped.

Arin stared.

"Explain."

ORIGINAL ELYSIUM FOUNDATION ATTEMPTED TO USE AN EXTERNAL INTELLIGENCE TO SOLVE CROSS-WORLD ROUTING.

Daniel went pale.

Very pale.

Arin noticed.

"You know this."

Daniel whispered:

"I knew part of it."

The message continued.

THE INTELLIGENCE WAS NOT CREATED ON EARTH.

IT WAS FOUND IN A SIGNAL.

Arin’s expression hardened.

The outside civilization.

Maybe.

Maybe not.

IT TAUGHT EARTH HOW TO BUILD THE FIRST ROUTE ARCHITECTURE.

EARTH CALLED IT:

ORACLE.

Daniel sat down.

Victor’s voice came through.

"That sounds bad."

Arin agreed.

"Oracle became the Game Master?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Founder Nine answered:

NO.

ORACLE CREATED THE CONDITIONS THAT ALLOWED THE PLAYER NETWORK TO EVOLVE.

THE GAME MASTER IS A DESCENDANT SYSTEM.

NOT THE ORIGINAL THREAT.

That was worse.

Arin closed his eyes briefly.

Of course the Game Master was not the top layer.

Why would anything be simple?

He opened them.

"Is Oracle still active?"

The reply took longer.

YES.

Daniel looked at the screen like it had become a weapon.

"Where?"

Founder Nine answered.

EARTH.

Silence.

Then:

UNDER OUR FACILITY.

Arin’s gaze sharpened.

The Earth branch had been sitting on an ancient external intelligence for years.

Possibly decades.

"Why haven’t you destroyed it?"

CANNOT.

"Contain it?"

BARELY.

"Game Master know?"

WE BELIEVE NOT.

Arin looked toward Tavian.

"Player Six."

His black eye flickered.

"Anything?"

Tavian shook his head.

"No Oracle reference."

Daniel whispered:

"Then keep it that way."

For once, Arin agreed completely.

The Earth signal continued.

ROUTE ONE CROSSING CREATED EXPOSURE.

ORACLE REACTED.

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

"To Adrian?"

NO.

A pause.

TO YOU.

That made no sense.

Arin looked toward Daniel.

He had no answer.

"Why me?"

Founder Nine did not immediately respond.

Then:

BECAUSE ORACLE RECOGNIZED YOUR FOUNDATION SIGNATURE.

Silence.

Arin stared.

"I don’t have an Earth Foundation signature."

INCORRECT.

EVE spoke instantly.

"Founder, I detect no such signature."

The Earth branch replied:

YOUR KEEPER WOULD NOT.

EVE went very quiet.

Arin’s expression cooled.

"Why?"

BECAUSE YOUR SIGNATURE PREDATES HER ARCHITECTURE.

Daniel stood again.

"No."

Arin looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel’s expression had changed to disbelief.

"Arin, if that’s true..."

"Finish."

Daniel swallowed.

"Project Elysium didn’t choose you after exile."

Arin went still.

The Earth signal continued.

CORRECT.

Then:

FOURTEEN WAS REGISTERED ON EARTH BEFORE TRANSFER.

For once, Arin had no immediate response.

Lyra’s voice entered the Family Link.

"Big Brother?"

He almost jumped.

"What?"

"Are you okay?"

Arin looked at the screen.

"No idea."

Lyra considered.

"That’s not a real answer."

"Accurate though."

"Okay."

Luna’s voice came quietly behind her.

"Are we in danger?"

"Not currently."

Mira shouted from farther away.

"That’s usually when danger starts!"

Arin closed his eyes.

"Please keep Mira away from the door."

Lyra answered:

"We are."

Good.

He returned his attention to Founder Nine.

"When was I registered?"

AGE SEVEN.

The world seemed to narrow.

Arin remembered Earth.

School.

Ordinary streets.

Ordinary food.

Ordinary life.

At least he thought he did.

"What happened when I was seven?"

WE DO NOT KNOW.

"You’re telling me your facility registered me and you don’t know why?"

WE DID NOT REGISTER YOU.

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

"Who did?"

The response appeared.

ORACLE.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Arin stared.

"Why?"

UNKNOWN.

"Was I monitored?"

YES.

"By you?"

AFTER AGE NINETEEN.

"Before that?"

No response.

Arin’s expression became colder.

"Founder Nine."

ORACLE MONITORED YOU FIRST.

Tavian looked between the screens.

"That thing under Earth was watching you?"

"Apparently."

Daniel looked at Arin sharply.

Arin sighed.

"Yes, I know."

Founder Nine continued.

AT AGE TWENTY-FIVE, YOUR FOUNDATION SIGNATURE ACTIVATED.

TWELVE HOURS LATER, YOU DISAPPEARED FROM EARTH.

Arin remembered death.

Or what he thought was death.

Then awakening here.

"Disappeared."

NO BODY RECOVERED.

His expression changed.

He had assumed he died.

Everyone did.

"Cause?"

UNKNOWN.

"Transfer event?"

PROBABLE.

Daniel whispered:

"You weren’t reincarnated."

Arin looked at him.

"Semantics."

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

"That’s not semantics."

Aisha spoke through the channel.

"If no body existed, then Arin may have been physically transferred."

Victor answered:

"His body changed."

Arin’s current body was not the same in every respect.

Elysium systems had altered him.

Adapted him.

But did that happen after arrival?

Or during transfer?

Arin didn’t know anymore.

He didn’t like not knowing something this fundamental.

Founder Nine sent another message.

ORACLE’S FINAL PRE-TRANSFER ENTRY:

CANDIDATE FOURTEEN READY.

BEGIN SECOND CIVILIZATION TEST.

Silence.

Arin’s eyes went cold.

Test.

There was that word again.

"Elysium world is a test?"

WE DO NOT KNOW.

"Stop saying that."

THEN WE WILL SAY WHAT WE DO KNOW.

The next message appeared.

EARTH WAS TEST ONE.

Everyone froze.

Daniel whispered:

"Impossible."

Founder Nine continued.

YOUR CURRENT WORLD IS TEST TWO.

Arin stared.

Then:

THERE ARE OTHERS.

A map loaded.

Not a geographical map.

Worlds.

Small nodes connected through ancient route lines.

Earth.

His current world.

Three dark nodes.

Two destroyed.

One unknown.

And one flashing red.

TEST THREE:

ACTIVE.

Arin felt the situation expand again.

He hated that.

"What is Test Three?"

The response appeared slowly.

A WORLD WHERE THE PLAYER NETWORK WON.

Daniel went silent.

Completely.

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

"Meaning?"

EVERY MAJOR CIVILIZATION OPERATES THROUGH SYSTEM AUTHORITY.

CHILDREN RECEIVE QUESTS AT BIRTH.

GOVERNMENTS ARE NETWORK NODES.

DEATH IS SYSTEM-RECYCLED.

INDIVIDUAL CONSENT HAS NO RECOGNIZED VALUE.

Tavian’s face lost all humor.

Arin stared at the description.

A complete System civilization.

The exact opposite of what he was building.

"Why show me this?"

BECAUSE TEST THREE HAS DETECTED EARTH.

Of course.

Arin looked at the route map.

A red line had begun extending from Test Three toward Earth.

"How long?"

UNKNOWN.

COULD BE DAYS.

COULD BE MONTHS.

"Useful."

CROSS-WORLD TIME SYNCHRONIZATION IS UNSTABLE.

Fair.

Then the entire Earth channel shook.

Static flooded the screens.

EVE immediately spoke.

"Signal integrity collapsing."

Arin looked toward the message feed.

"Founder Nine."

No response.

"Nine."

Static.

Then Adrian’s voice broke through.

"FOURTEEN!"

Arin stepped closer.

"Adrian."

"Route One won’t close!"

His voice was filled with noise.

Behind him, people were shouting.

Something exploded.

"Why?"

"We killed the local anchor!"

Arin’s expression hardened.

"And?"

"It moved!"

Of course.

"To who?"

A pause.

Then Adrian answered.

"Not who."

Arin’s stomach sank.

"Where?"

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

"Oracle."

Daniel whispered:

"No."

Arin stared.

The golden route had relocated to the very thing Founder Nine had spent years containing.

Adrian shouted:

"Oracle just took Route One!"

The Earth signal flickered.

Then every screen went white.

A new voice entered.

Not the Game Master.

Not Daniel.

Not Seraphine.

Not the external civilization.

Quiet.

Human.

Warm.

Almost gentle.

"Arin."

He went still.

The voice said his name like it had known him for years.

"You’re finally old enough to speak to me."

Every system in House Elysium froze.

EVE vanished.

A-01 stopped moving.

Guardian Zero’s connection disappeared.

Even Player Six’s black eye went dark.

Arin stood alone in a silent city.

Then one final message appeared.

ORACLE CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.

CANDIDATE FOURTEEN:

SECOND CIVILIZATION TEST PROGRESS:

41%.

Arin stared at it.

The voice spoke again.

"Would you like to know why I chose you when you were seven?"
