Chapter 301: Chapter 301: The Unlucky Devil

Just as Feng Ling was thinking He Yue Ning was celebrating too early, He Xingluo quickly stabbed the Centipede a few more times, then frowned and warned her sister, "Don’t let your guard down before the Card materializes! The Alien Species might lash out before it dies!"

"Oops..." He Yue Ning gave a sheepish smile. "I got it. I’ll be careful next time."

Fan Ze and his team members gathered around.

They set up a cordon around the area and stood guard nearby to prevent civilians from approaching. One of the team members retrieved a device for collecting the Card from their vehicle.

Compared to the twins’ elation, the Special Attack Team’s reaction was overly calm, almost numb. It was as if the death of an Alien Species was just another unremarkable part of their daily work.

He Yue Ning pouted, slightly displeased.

Though she never expected to have the same telepathic connection with outsiders in battle as she did with her twin, this palpable sense of distance still soured her mood.

Fan Ze walked over and said to He Xingluo, "Vice-captain, I’ve called the Cleaner Fish. They’ll be here soon. Should we leave a couple of people to stand guard while the rest of us continue the patrol?"

He Xingluo shook her head gently. "We’ll leave after the Cleaner Fish get here."

Fan Ze said nothing. He glanced down at the Alien Species corpse on the ground, then turned and walked away.

Feng Ling got out of her vehicle and approached the iron-railed courtyard wall. Through the bars, she could see the Centipede monster was dead as a doornail. Its upper half was humanoid, its lower half a centipede. Interestingly, there were no burn marks on the corpse. The tattoo on its arm was clearly visible—three letters and a heart, likely the initials of a girlfriend’s name.

"Ms. Ling!" He Yue Ning shouted, hopping over from inside the residential complex.

This time, Feng Ling saw it clearly—

He Yue Ning passed right through the wall, as effortlessly as if the iron bars were air. Her clothes, however, clearly didn’t possess the same ability. They were caught on the bars for a moment before the fabric slipped through the gaps and settled back against her body.

The whole process was incredibly fast, taking less than a second.

Feng Ling remarked with genuine admiration, "Your Cards are amazing."

"Hehe~" He Yue Ning chirped. "My Card is Black Impermanence, and Xingluo’s is White Impermanence. We’ve also each absorbed a ghost Card."

"Yue Ning..." Not far away, He Xingluo looked at her sister with a helpless expression.

She was the older sister, but only by a few minutes.

"Hey, I know we’re not supposed to discuss other people’s Cards. I’m telling Feng Ling about *my* Card, not anyone else’s," He Yue Ning argued defensively.

Feng Ling asked, "So the fire you two used earlier, that was Ghost Fire?"

"That’s right," He Yue Ning said with a grin. "Ghost Fire can’t burn anyone to death, but it can quickly weaken a target."

Feng Ling’s interest was piqued. "When you two have some free time, let’s find a place and have a friendly spar."

"Sure!" He Yue Ning agreed with a nod. "You’ll have to go easy on us, Ms. Ling, hehe!"

He Xingluo said, "Inspectors are strictly forbidden from private duels. We’d have to report it to Captain Bai and get her approval first."

"Captain Bai will definitely agree. She said last time that as long as Feng Ling was willing, we could have a training match, any way we want."

"I know, but we should still tell Captain Bai beforehand..."

After a bit of idle chat, the Cleaner Fish arrived.

A large truck pulled up to the entrance of the complex, and a group of fully-equipped people quickly disembarked.

The ones in front carried heavy PVC waterproof tarps, while those in the back held disinfection sprayers.

Upon arriving, they immediately covered the corpse with the tarps to prevent residents in the surrounding apartment buildings from taking pictures or videos.

Then, they worked ropes underneath the body and over the top of the tarp, winding and binding it tightly. Working as a team, they hoisted the securely wrapped corpse onto the truck—

The Cleaner Fish sprayed disinfectant all around, and the air was instantly filled with a pungent chemical odor.

Feng Ling couldn’t help but cover her nose. She watched the Cleaner Fish spray the area two or three times before getting back on the truck and driving away with the Alien Species’ corpse.

She asked Fan Ze, "Where are they taking the body?"

Fan Ze glanced at Feng Ling before answering, "The Inspection Bureau has an incinerator in the outer suburbs."

He Xingluo said, "That’s good. This way, the nearby residents won’t have to see such a gory scene."

He Yue Ning asked, "Since we’re done here, should we continue our patrol?"

He Xingluo looked back at Fan Ze. "Leave one person to take that girl from earlier back to the Inspection Bureau for questioning. The rest of the team comes with us."

Fan Ze nodded. "Understood."

Everyone got into their vehicles.

Feng Ling also got back into her small van, slowly pulling out and following the patrol vehicle.

The appearance of an Alien Species was hardly news anymore, but a direct eyewitness account of the scene still caused a minor stir online.

Nearby residents had taken photos of the Alien Species’ grotesque corpse from their windows. The uncensored pictures were now spreading rapidly across all major platforms.

In the villa, not even the thick carpet could muffle Gray Rat’s frantic footsteps. He stormed up to the second floor, shouting for his cousin as he threw open the bedroom door.

The bedroom was empty, so he immediately spun around and headed for the study.

Xing Guang was leaning back in the chair at his desk, watching Gray Rat with a detached air. "When will you learn to be more composed?"

Gray Rat slammed his phone onto the desk with a sharp SLAP. "Look at this! It just broke!"

Xing Guang let out a nearly inaudible sigh, picked up the phone, and glanced at it.

"Is it one of ours?" he asked.

Gray Rat shook his head. "No, just some unlucky bastard who recently logged in. His entry point happened to be Jinnan City."

"Then what’s there to be anxious about?" Xing Guang said indifferently, setting the phone down. "Getting discovered right after logging in just means he didn’t study the guides on the forums. He had it coming."

"Look at the side!" Gray Rat insisted, shoving the phone back in front of Xing Guang. "That long-haired woman next to it is Feng Ling!"

Xing Guang’s brow furrowed slightly as he picked up the phone again.

The photo was taken from a bird’s-eye view, with the corpse dominating the center. In the top-left corner was a wall with railings that obscured half of Feng Ling’s body. She was hard to spot without looking closely.

"Since she’s in Jinnan City, it’s only natural for her to be with Inspectors from the Jingnan Branch..." Xing Guang said, putting down the phone. "Gray Rat, you’re paying far too much attention to her."

"How can I not?!" Gray Rat, unable to stand Xing Guang’s unflappable demeanor, snapped, "Don’t you want to get the puppet master? She’s this close with the Inspection Bureau now. How are we supposed to make our move?!"

Xing Guang said flatly, "She won’t stay in Jinnan City forever."

"So we’re just supposed to wait here? Play the long game with her? For how long?!" Gray Rat fumed. "I told you we had to get rid of the hidden Boss! But you never take it seriously. All you know is how to hide and wait and endure! And now look! That damned ghost has followed us to Jinnan City to ruin our plans! I’m telling Bai Mao about this! Let Bai Mao make the call!"
