All My Summons Become Divine Girls
Chapter 579: Two Crooked Ears
The baker pinched two ears into the dough before she noticed what her hands had made, the little shape waiting on the counter beside the blank margin of her recipe.
She had meant to make an ordinary roll.
There were already three rabbits on the tray.
The ears leaned to one side on every one of them, their familiar crookedness making her smile before she remembered that she did not know who used to like them that way.
Her hand stopped above the fourth piece.
The room should have had another voice in it.
She could remember being annoyed at flour caught beneath the recipe’s folded corner, the sound of a pen scratching too close to the wet part of the counter, somebody correcting the angle of her grip.
She had held it like a spoon.
The thought made her laugh once under her breath, the unfinished sound catching when she tried to remember who had shown her the difference.
Her child had taught her to write.
She knew that sentence.
She could not put a face at its end.
The line beside the recipe lay empty where the first shaky practice had been, the margin looking too clean against the flour and old grease elsewhere on the page.
She pressed her thumb to it.
Nothing came back.
The first letters farther down the page were large and uneven, each later line growing smaller as her own hand learned to trust the pen.
She could follow that change all the way to the neat instruction about resting dough beside the oven.
Her child had stayed long enough to teach her that much.
She traced one clumsy letter with a flour-covered finger, trying to remember whether somebody had laughed when she finally made it properly.
The paper kept the shape of her effort.
It had lost the person beside it.
Hajin waited on the other side of the counter with Vella beside him, the quiet they had brought making it possible for her to hear the oven working behind her.
He had come when she asked.
That should have made this easier.
"I know I learned here," she said.
Vella looked toward the pen beside the recipe, keeping her hands away from the page until the baker moved her own fingers clear.
"What do you remember?"
The baker took the pen and held it the old wrong way, its familiar weight sitting across the grip her child had once corrected.
Then she changed her fingers without thinking.
"That."
Hajin watched the small movement.
The baker put the pen down before it began shaking enough to spoil the demonstration, her eyes finding the four little rabbits waiting where she had shaped them.
"Those too, somebody wanted the ears wrong."
She could feel a happiness attached to that mistake.
It hurt worse than the blank line.
Ash came close beside the counter, one hand settling against the flour on the baker’s apron while his mother watched from the broad approach outside the open bakery doorway.
"They look like they are listening sideways."
The baker looked down at his serious face.
"Perhaps they are."
His hand stayed against her apron without trying to make her smile again, the little weight helping her keep her own hands on the counter instead of pressing them against her empty head.
Cessy and Lucan stood near the oven end with the copy Sava had preserved after the ledger began losing names, their burned wrists held carefully clear of its flour-covered surface.
The baker had watched their claws when they first came in.
Now she watched the way they kept those claws away from the page until Vella asked for room beside her recipe.
"May I follow this?" the healer asked.
The baker nodded, then found her voice before Vella touched the margin.
"Leave the rest where it is."
"I will."
Violet met the surviving edge of the practice line, a thin thread answering beneath the old paper without filling the blank space beside it.
The baker heard it hum when the healer touched the trace, a small note under the oven’s ordinary noise that made her fingers curl around the counter’s edge.
The thread turned toward the same returning direction Sava had marked the evening before.
Lucan bent close enough to inspect its hook-shaped notation, keeping his own wrapped palm on the safe wood beside the page while Cessy followed its opposite edge with her eyes.
"A return notation," he said.
Cessy pointed to the smaller turn inside it.
"Already assigned a place."
The baker looked from one face to the other, waiting for words that belonged to something she could understand in her own kitchen.
Hajin noticed the look.
"Where is it going?"
Lucan followed the direction against Sava’s copy, the little marks meeting along the route that had led down beneath the central engine.
"Somewhere that already knew how to store it."
The baker’s grip tightened.
"So somebody has it."
Cessy looked at her across the page before turning the copy so she could see the continuing line.
"The marks show it being sent toward storage."
Vella kept the violet thread attached to the preserved note while Hajin set the route against the local map, the traced direction reaching beneath the central cradle where the engine’s public rooms ended.
[ Stolen Memory Route: Confirmed ]
[ Direction: Archive beneath Central Cradle ]
[ Memory Destruction: Not Confirmed ]
The baker read the last line twice without asking anyone to make it a promise.
She wanted one badly enough to hear it if they gave her half of one.
Hajin kept the panel where she could see the actual words, his injured hand resting on the counter while the thread remained attached to what her child had left on the page.
"Can you bring my child back?"
The question made the room quieter.
Ash looked up at her hand where it had tightened against the counter, his fingers staying lightly on the apron while she tried to bear the wait after asking it.
Hajin met her eyes.
"I can follow what was taken and bring you what we find."
She looked down at the little rabbits.
A missing face was not the only thing she could imagine in that blank place, the fear of having been left sitting beside the knowledge that somebody had taken something from her.
Her child might have wanted a life elsewhere.
Her child might have tried to tell her.
The room in her memory had one wall gone, everything she remembered leaning toward the space where the answer should have been.
"Bring me the truth first," she said, "even if the truth says the child chose to leave me."
Hajin stayed still while she finished the words, his expression changing just enough for her to see that he had heard the part she had nearly swallowed.
"The truth first."
She let her breath out.
Vella gave Sava’s waiting witness space to copy those terms beside the route, the new testimony kept apart from the old blank line while the baker watched every word being written.
The same terms would go to the other families before the descent, giving them somewhere to put answers that might hurt differently from the absence.
The oven gave a sharp little pop behind Cessy.
The baker turned at the sound, her hands reaching for the tray cloth before the rest of her had decided whether she could manage ordinary bread again.
Hajin moved the clear space closer on the counter for her.
She opened the oven with one hand and drew out the finished batch, its heat touching her face while the familiar smell found the part of her body that still knew exactly what came next.
"Big brother, the oven is asking for your attention," Cessy told Hajin as he nearly put the clearing board across the place the hot tray needed to land.
He moved it back with an offended look at the perfectly innocent wood.
The baker laughed before she could stop herself.
Then she cried with the cloth still wrapped around the tray, the two sounds leaving her together while Hajin steadied its cool outer handle until she had it safely on the counter.
Vella offered the dry end of the cloth, waiting while she wiped her face.
She broke one finished roll after her hands steadied, putting half into Hajin’s waiting cloth and keeping the other beside the new written terms.
"Do not forget what I asked."
He closed his hand carefully beneath the cloth.
"I will take the words with me."
The baker watched the witness place their copy beside the route map, the promise leaving her counter with something more solid than a sympathetic face.
Vella secured the preserved note without cutting its thread, keeping the uncut recipe with the baker while the traced copy went with the people who could follow it farther.
Cessy and Lucan stepped out ahead to compare the return direction with the ordinary approach to the cradle stair, their measured pace taking the route from the page into actual ground.
The baker followed as far as her own doorway.
She saw them stop at the descent with the copied line still pointing below, Hajin meeting them there after the witness carried her terms to the waiting family records.
Ash let go of her apron only when his mother called him gently toward their safe place beside the party.
The baker went back to the counter with the room still missing its other voice.
Her hands reached for the fourth rabbit before she looked at it, pinching one ear crooked while the guarded road beneath the cradle waited for the truth they had promised to bring.
