Chapter 789: Chapter 789 - He’s mine

Last night, after the failed kidnapping attempt on the two white wolves, Battal was called to another emergency meeting. But this time, it was not just with the elders but also the protectors, as well as the Lycan army commanders.

These kinds of meetings were never interesting, and as expected, the bullets were being launched as the first elder spoke, his voice sharp with accusation that left the air heavy with tension.

"King Battal, you have failed us again."

Battal was not surprised that the news had reached the elders before his arrival. The Lycans had different clans, each of them competing for the kingship to come from their side, each of them hungry for power, for dominance, for the crown. Pure political hunger filled the room.

Battal was the first of his lineage and was succeeded by his son, Bowen, who found love and turned his back on duty. Of course, they had to kill him, though he cut ties, though he tried to walk away. His only hope in protecting his lineage was his grandson, Braxson. The knowledge of that loss still sat cold in Battal’s chest.

However, Battal did not accept all the blame this time, his voice cold and sharp, pure defiance rising to meet the accusation.

"If you think it’s easy, then lead the way during our next attack. It should be easy for you, won’t it?"

The first elder’s gaze darkened, and he went quiet, his jaw tight with barely suppressed rage that left the silence thick. They knew had all gone through the same training and knew they were no match for Battal.

Bowen was stronger than Battal. He would have been the right person to lead this war, but Love erased his wisdom, letting the kingship title fall back into the hands of his father.

The second elder asked, his voice curious, probing, pure calculation in the question.

"I heard they have the hybrid produced from our lab. Where did they find her when we couldn’t?"

During that time, they had tried to produce a stronger breed than the white wolves, combining the DNA of a white wolf, a Lycan, and a human witch. But they also added other things, dark things, and planted this embryo in a female Lycan. Pure ambition had driven the experiment.

When she heard she’d be killed after giving birth to keep secret the outcome of their experiment, she escaped the moment she got the chance. But they caught up to her and killed her, albeit after she gave birth.

Still, they could not find the pup, since the energy in the human world had a way of hiding their scent, of concealing their presence. The failure of it still burned.

"I need answers to the questions you are asking too." Battal replied with a nonchalant expression, his face carefully blank, pure control masking the residual shock of the previous night. He had narrowly escaped after the arrival of the white wolf.

She was strong, too strong, and that was why they needed her blood even more. But that black wolf was standing in the way, a barrier between Battal and everything he desired. Pure frustration at the obstacle left his jaw tight.

"If we don’t take care, these werewolves would rule the world." The third elder said, his voice heavy with warning that settled over the group.

But one of the protectors countered, his voice steady, pure strategic assessment in the words. "I’m glad that isn’t going to happen. All I see in the werewolf king is ambition blended with desperation. He wants to unite the packs but has no desire for world dominance like we do."

"We were so close to getting the younger white wolf, but a certain redhead bitch stood in our way." Battal’s voice was cold, empty of any remorse. "I will kill her the moment I lay eyes on her, if she isn’t already dead. Not even our kind can survive our poison, so I need not worry. She’ll die anyway."

For as long as that red wolf was dead, he’d have a little bit of peace. After all, whoever stands in the way of achieving his plans had to pay with his or her life.

Even as he had promised to take care of her, she still stubbornly chose to be loyal to the Alpha King. What was so special about him? Was it his looks? He was even married. Pure baffled resentment burned under the surface.

"So what is the next plan? We aren’t going to give up, are we?" The fourth elder asked, his voice tight with impatience that matched the restless energy in the room.

Battal’s gaze darkened dangerously, his eyes burning with a fury that could set the world on fire, pure refusal to yield in every line of his face.

"Give up? Not gonna happen." His voice was ice, each word a blade. "It’s just that my next plan would take time. I have to let them feel like they won, so we can’t attack them again yet."

The yoke of disappointment in the air was heavy as one of the protectors spoke. He was their most powerful wizard, his voice carrying the weight of centuries and pure caution.

"Their shaman is one of a kind. We have to stay clear of their pack and only attack from the pack land."

Battal’s gaze was cold, his jaw tight with pure focused hatred. "I’m not even going to attack the pack land anymore. The king is their strength. Once we remove him, it will be easy to have the white wolves. Voren is my only target now."

The next day, Battal did his supervisions at the Lycan academy and sent his grandson on a mission in the underworld.

The remaining trainees continued as usual, and he was preparing to leave for the city when their entry portal to the outlands emitted a red steam, a warning, a signal of danger that sent pure urgency through every mindlink.

’There’s trouble.’ The protectors began to mindlink him, their voices urgent. ’There’s someone of greater power at our entry, and we can’t connect with Gilad.’

Gilad was the protector on duty at the entry, so Battal decided to go and check, realizing that the portal was not opening to him. Due to security, only the protector stationed at the outlands could open the portal from there.

For the ones inside to exercise their authority, they had to neutralize the authority of the previous protector. Pure frustration at the blockage left his hands clenched.

’You are the protectors. What should we do about it?’ Battal asked, his voice sharp with command that demanded answers.

One of the protectors answered, his voice careful, pure practical assessment. ’We have to go to the outlands, but we can’t use the portal. We’d have to use the long way.’

Battal was not liking this, his jaw tightening with frustration that burned hotter with every second. ’Fine. Let’s use the entry to the human world, and use a chopper from there to the outlands. Due to the many trees, we can stop a few miles away and continue the journey on foot.’

The plan worked as Battal left with members of the Lycan army and protectors, much stronger than those he’d used last night. He also had spies in the outlands, and though he could not reach them, he was certain to use their strength as well. Pure readiness settled over the group.

What he never expected was to see the clear evidence of what Voren had left for him. Though trained to hide emotions, it was very hard to do so at a time like this, his face contorting with rage, his hands curling into fists at his sides, pure fury flooding every vein.

"Voren, I swear I would kill you and wipe your entire generation." He threatened, his voice cracking with fury that left no room for control.

Voren scoffed as he glanced at each member of his team, sending them a hard warning with Bloodfang’s authority, his voice low and dangerous, pure claim in the single declaration.

"He’s mine."
