Chapter 564: Chapter 368: Li Wei: Sorry, I’m a Cheater
"A man in his thirties being watched by his own father like a prisoner—no one could stand that," Li Wei said.
"But if I don’t keep an eye on him," Flynn’s tone suddenly hardened, "it won’t take him three months to slide from prescription meds to hard drugs. People addicted to opioids always end up on fentanyl."
Only then did Li Wei understand what Flynn meant by "quitting my job to take care of my son."
The two men fell silent for a moment.
"Mr. Robert Flynn," Li Wei weighed his words carefully, "let me suggest—"
"Just call me Uncle Robert," Flynn interrupted. "I’ve liked you every time we’ve met. There’s no need to be so formal between us."
"Uncle Robert," Li Wei said, "don’t think I’m talking nonsense when I say this."
"Let’s hear it first."
"When I was in the Celestial Dynasty, I came across some... well, traditional martial arts practices," Li Wei said. "There are some body-conditioning techniques that are somewhat effective at relieving pain and restoring bodily functions."
Flynn shot him a look that clearly said, "What kind of fucking joke are you fucking playing at?"
"I’m not talking about some snake-oil scam," Li Wei added. "I just want to ask if you’d mind me having a chat with Sean."
Flynn’s first reaction was to refuse. But on second thought, things were already at rock bottom. He might as well grasp at straws. Why not give it a try?
"Are you serious?" He stared at Li Wei.
"I’m just going to talk to him," Li Wei said. "No injections, no pills, and no motivational fluff or hypnosis. The absolute worst that could happen is that it simply doesn’t work."
Flynn stayed silent for a couple of seconds before downing the rest of his whiskey in one gulp.
Li Wei stood up, walked to the end of the hallway, and knocked on the door.
There was no response from inside.
He knocked twice more.
"Sean Flynn?" he said. "I’m Li Wei, the guy from the living room just now."
"I don’t need psychological counseling. Go away," Sean’s voice came from behind the door.
"I’m not here to counsel you." Li Wei leaned against the doorframe. "But the pie your dad made is genuinely terrible, and I figured I’d find someone to complain about it with."
"My mom made that," Sean said through the door. "My mom’s pies are the best."
"Then it’s even worse to complain about it to his face," Li Wei said.
The door unlocked with a CLICK.
After opening it, Sean walked deep into the room, put his gaming headset back on, and continued playing. He was immersed in a shooter game that Li Wei couldn’t name.
Li Wei looked around. The room couldn’t be called completely messy, but it wasn’t exactly tidy, either. It seemed Margaret would clean it every day after he went out, only for him to wreck it again when he returned at night. A neat row of pill bottles lined the nightstand, their labels crammed with dense text.
Li Wei stood next to Sean Flynn, quietly watching him game.
After a while, Sean’s match ended. He took off his headset and glanced at Li Wei.
"Are you a celebrity?" he asked, studying Li Wei’s handsome face. "Or an idol from South Korea?"
"I’m the Super Bowl MVP," Li Wei said.
Sean Flynn’s expression shifted drastically. He looked as if he had just seen Dwayne Johnson starring in a live-action *My Little Pony* movie.
"I had no idea the NFL even had Asian players now, let alone one who won Super Bowl MVP," he said.
"How long has it been since you interacted with the outside world like a normal person?" Li Wei smiled. "Last year, I led the Giants to an unprecedented undefeated streak straight through the regular season, the playoffs, and the Super Bowl, eventually winning the whole thing."
Sean let out an "Oh," about to say something sarcastic and depressing. However, he stopped himself. Taking just a second to think about it, he realized that this was truly an earth-shattering, historic achievement. He couldn’t have made it up even if he tried.
"That’s genuinely impressive," he admitted. "Much better than me."
"Do you want to know how I did it?" Li Wei asked. "Because I know Chinese Kung Fu."
Sean Flynn paused. He pulled out his phone and looked Li Wei up. After scrolling for quite a while, he asked cautiously, "Then... can you help me solve my problem?"
"I’m not sure." Li Wei shrugged. "But I figure there’s no harm in trying."
The description of the [Knight’s Light (Silver)] skill he had just learned stated that it provided buffing and restorative effects to the Spirit. Although Li Wei didn’t know if it would be useful here, he could at least give it a shot.
Sean fell silent before saying dejectedly, "Yeah, let’s give it a try."
Li Wei had him sit up straight with his back turned toward him.
With a single thought, Li Wei suddenly felt a wave of exhaustion wash over him, as if he had just run fifty kilometers non-stop with his current physical attributes. Though he was slightly drained, the fatigue gradually eased with each breath.
An extremely faint warmth radiated from the palm of his hand, like a weakened hand warmer.
The [Jester’s Skull] flew out, carefully observing Sean Flynn in front of it.
[A soldier, a soldier who almost became a cripple.]
[What a pity. Two-legged soldiers are everywhere, but a one-legged soldier is a rare sight indeed.]
[My master, are you going to use Knight’s Light to heal him? Let me see... this is merely a mortal soldier. Three casts of Knight’s Light will be enough to cure him.]
Li Wei placed his hand on Sean’s neck.
The moment Li Wei’s hand made contact, Sean felt goosebumps erupt all over his body. His subconscious reaction was to immediately swat Li Wei’s hand away.
