Chapter 688: Case Closed, a Period
Chapter 688 -570: Case Closed, a Period
Lu Weihong had the phone on speaker. “Dad, where’s Mom?”
His father’s mind wasn’t on the call. He answered casually, “I don’t know. What’s wrong?”
Lu Weihong was silent for a moment, then urged, “Dad, you need to take care of Mom. She has high blood pressure, so don’t always get her worked up.”
His father said impatiently, “Alright, I know. I’m just playing mahjong, and only for fifty cents a game. Your mother just makes a fuss over everything. She can’t stand to see me idle for a second in her life.”
Lu Weihong sighed softly. “Dad, take care of yourself.”
“I know, I know,” his father said. “Is there anything else? If not, I’m hanging up.”
“Okay.”
Lu Weihong was the first to hang up. He said to Chang Zhigang, “Don’t worry. I’m making another call.”
At this point, even Chang Zhigang could tell something was wrong. He shot a look at Shen Xin and the others.
Lu Weihong dialed his wife’s number again.
The call connected quickly.
“Jiajia, what are you up to?” Lu Weihong’s voice became gentle.
Ruan Jia’s voice came from the phone. She said their daughter had just fallen asleep after her feeding and asked when Lu Weihong would be back and what he wanted for dinner.
“Anything is fine. I just miss Ziyi a little.”
After a pause, Lu Weihong asked Ruan Jia to bring the phone closer. He wanted to hear his daughter’s breathing.
Ruan Jia said, exasperated, “Oh, you. You’ve really become a doting father. Didn’t you just see her this afternoon?”
Despite her words, she still brought the phone closer and whispered, asking Lu Weihong if he could hear.
A very faint breathing sound came through the phone.
“So nice.”
Lu Weihong’s eyes started to turn red, and he struggled to keep his voice steady.
Ruan Jia whispered, asking if he wanted to video chat.
“No, don’t wake her.” Lu Weihong shook his head, gritted his teeth, and said, “Jiajia, thank you for giving me such a beautiful daughter. I really love you so much.”
The sudden declaration of love caught Ruan Jia off guard. She said shyly, “We’re an old married couple. What are you talking about?”
Lu Weihong forced a smile and said that was all, he’d be home in a little while.
After speaking, he hurriedly hung up the phone.
Chang Zhigang immediately said, “Lu Weihong, don’t do anything rash! If you love your daughter that much, then put down the knife.”
He reached for his gun, calculating the odds of shooting Lu Weihong in the shoulder.
Shen Xin also said at once, “Lu Weihong, why are you doing this? If you wanted to say goodbye, do you think this is enough?”
Lu Weihong picked up his phone, stared at it silently, then shook his head. “What, do you think I can still live?”
This question stumped Shen Xin and the others.
Six lives. There was no way he would get out of this alive.
Lu Weihong said, “So, you see, the result is the same. I’m a dead man.”
“But there’s a difference in *how* I die. You could send me to court, announce my death sentence in front of everyone, and make it known to the whole world.”
“Then from now on, maybe people will talk about my daughter, say she’s the daughter of a murderer.”
“And Jiajia… people will say how evil her husband was, that he killed so many people. They might even wonder if she knew all along.”
“Gossip is a fearsome thing. I don’t want Jiajia and my daughter to carry that kind of burden.”
“So I can die, and I *should* die. But I can’t let you put me on public trial and make this whole affair known to everyone.”
“If I die now, maybe fewer people will know about this. Then it’s a clean break. The case is closed, you can report back to your superiors, and everything can be brought to a close.”
He looked at his phone again, his eyes filled with gentleness, as if his daughter’s breathing was still whispering in his ear.
Shen Xin was deeply shaken. He had never imagined Lu Weihong would think this way.
Looking at Chang Zhigang and the others beside him, he guessed they were just as shocked.
“You…” Shen Xin wanted to persuade him, but he didn’t know what to say.
After all, just as Lu Weihong had said, his fate was already sealed. There was no changing it.
Chang Zhigang was also at a loss for words, not knowing how to persuade him.
Even Xu Jinguang had hurriedly gotten out of his car and was rushing over.
“Oh, right.” Lu Weihong said suddenly. “Actually, I’ve always had this question that’s bothered me for years. It’s also the main reason I resolved to kill Liu Baoli and the others.”
“It’s about the child Suhua was pregnant with. Do you think it could have been mine?”
“Because the night before we went into the mountains, we were together. After Suhua died, I kept having nightmares. I’d dream of a child yelling at me, yelling ‘Dad,’ yelling ‘I don’t want to die.'”
“Do you think that child could have been mine?”
Lu Weihong’s expression was confused and vacant. The next moment, while everyone was still trying to figure out how to answer, he suddenly lunged, plunging the sharp dagger through his own body.
He used immense force, driving it all the way to the hilt.
He gritted his teeth, not letting go. His left hand trembled, and the phone fell.
The photo gallery was open to a family picture of him holding his daughter.
