Chapter 687 -570: Case Closed, Full Stop (2)

Just as the two officers on either side of him grabbed his arms to handcuff him, he exploded with sudden force, as if a switch had been flipped, and shoved them away.

This reaction was actually what Chang Zhigang had expected.

Even a petty thief would struggle and resist, let alone a murderer with six lives on his conscience.

But resisting was useless.

It was an enclosed office with seven or eight officers inside and more waiting outside. Could he really get away?

Jump from the second-floor window?

But there were people downstairs, too.

He was the only non-officer in the room, so he had no one to take hostage.

As for fighting back?

During the earlier technical investigation, the task force had already sent people to inspect his office for potential evidence. It wasn’t as if he had a gun hidden under his desk that he could suddenly pull out to blast a bloody path to freedom.

They had him surrounded. All resistance was meaningless.

But what no one expected was that after shoving the officers aside, Lu Weihong would reach back, grab something from the display cabinet behind him, and then, in one swift motion, draw it out.

It was a decorative, sheathed dagger, inlaid with various fake gemstones. It had been resting on a stand in one of the compartments of the display cabinet right behind him.

After drawing the dagger, Lu Weihong pressed it to his own neck and shouted, “Don’t move!”

The two officers immediately froze.

Behind Shen Xin, Yang Zeran and the others had already drawn their pistols.

Chang Zhigang’s expression didn’t change. In a deep voice, he asked, “Lu Weihong, are you trying to run? We wouldn’t have come if we weren’t prepared. Do you really think you can get away?”

Shen Xin added, “Lu Weihong, we already know everything. Put the knife down and come with us.”

In Shen Xin’s eyes, this sort of resistance was pointless.

Lu Weihong pressed the dagger firmly against his throat and motioned for the officer to his left to get out of the way.

Chang Zhigang gave a subtle nod, and the officer stepped aside.

Lu Weihong slowly backed into a corner of the office.

He was going the wrong way; the door was on the other side of the room.

He could try jumping out the window, but there were officers below. The office was under surveillance, so the team downstairs would have already been alerted.

Lu Weihong moved the dagger, aiming it at his heart.

His face showed none of the frantic panic of a cornered animal. Instead, he was eerily calm. “First of all,” he said, “this dagger is sharp. If I stab myself with it, I will die.”

Chang Zhigang’s brow furrowed slightly. “And?” he retorted.

‘Threatening to kill himself?’

Lu Weihong pointed at Shen Xin with his free hand. “You said you know everything. Do you have proof?”

Shen Xin said, “We wouldn’t be here arresting you if we didn’t have proof. Put down the knife and come with us.”

Lu Weihong shook his head. “No. Right here. First, you tell me what evidence you have. After you tell me, I’ll go with you.”

Xu Jinguang’s voice came through Chang Zhigang’s earpiece. “Tell him. Make him realize it’s hopeless.”

It wasn’t a matter of insufficient evidence; they already had ironclad proof. Any attempt to argue was pointless.

Chang Zhigang said gravely, “Lu Weihong, you’re a smart man. You should know that arguing and resisting are pointless. We’ve already found Yang Guofa and learned everything that happened in the mountains all those years ago.”

“We also found the USB drive you hid in Li Suhua’s grave. I advise you to put down the knife and come with us.”

Surprise and shock flickered across Lu Weihong’s face.

He paused for a full ten seconds before asking, “You found Yang Guofa? Where is he?”

When Chang Zhigang told him the man had fled the country, he fell silent again.

“Is he doing well?” Lu Weihong asked.

Shen Xin glanced at Chang Zhigang and said, “Don’t worry, he’s not doing so well.”

Yang Guofa was still abroad, unable to get away from Jolinda, and hadn’t decided to return to the country.

“Not well?”

Lu Weihong slid down the wall into a sitting position. “Then tell me,” he said. “How is he not doing well?”

Shen Xin said, “Put the knife down and come with us. I’ll tell you all about it when we get back to the station.”

Lu Weihong just shook his head, insisting that they tell him right there.

Shen Xin frowned slightly. ‘This is weird.’ He had a strange feeling that Lu Weihong’s behavior was abnormal. After a moment’s thought, he briefly explained Yang Guofa’s situation.

After listening, Lu Weihong actually chuckled. “Good,” he said. “That’s great. Heaven hasn’t let him off the hook.”

He still hadn’t lowered the dagger. After another moment of silence, he pointed to the desk. “Give me my phone. I want to call my mom and my wife. Don’t worry, I just need to make a call to get some things in order. I can put it on speaker.”

“You already have the USB drive with the evidence of my murders, so you don’t have to worry about me telling them to do anything. Once I’m done with the call, I’ll go with you.”

Chang Zhigang and Shen Xin exchanged a look. They both felt something was off about Lu Weihong.

“You can make your phone calls to your parents and wife at the station, according to regulations.”

Lu Weihong shook his head again, pressing the dagger hard against his chest. “I’m calling now.”

Chang Zhigang’s voice was grim. “And if we say no?”

Lu Weihong’s expression didn’t change as he gripped the dagger and plunged it directly into his own thigh.

SQUELCH.

The intense pain made the veins on his forehead throb.

He then coldly pulled it out and aimed it at his chest again. “I just want to make a phone call,” he said through gritted teeth.

His action startled everyone in the room.

Shen Xin was stunned and quietly nudged Chang Zhigang.

A new instruction must have come from Xu Jinguang through the earpiece, because Chang Zhigang, his face taut, gestured for someone to give Lu Weihong the phone.

“On speaker.”

Lu Weihong took the phone, took a deep breath, and dialed a number.

After a busy signal, the call didn’t connect.

He tried another number, which took a while to connect.

The clatter of mahjong tiles being shuffled came from the other end of the line.

“Son, what’s up?” It sounded like Lu Weihong’s father.
