Chapter 719: Chapter 11: The Vengeful Coyote (3)
Shen Xin couldn’t help but sigh in admiration. Never mind their crime-solving skills—their equipment was certainly top-notch.
Police helicopters weren’t nearly as common back in China.
With a helicopter, they could perform low-altitude tracking.
The coyotes didn’t seem scared. Seeing Shen Xin follow, they continued their mad dash southward.
They had impressive stamina, pushing on for a good sixty or seventy kilometers along the ridgeline and crossing through the Grovantre Wilderness.
Farther ahead, the mountains sloped down, with the southern stretch of Highway 191 acting as a dividing line.
They didn’t quite reach the southern stretch of Highway 191, instead starting to wander around the nearby area.
It seemed they were looking for something.
They ducked into the forest from time to time.
Thanks to the GPS collars, there was no fear of losing them.
The only question was whether they were looking for the wolf-dog.
In any case, York was energized, carefully examining a map of the vicinity.
This area was still within the state of Wyoming. South of Jackson City, along Highway 191, there were several towns scattered about.
This was because farther south lay another national park called the Bridge-Teton National Forest Park.
It bordered Grand Teton and offered hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter.
The coyotes’ search was slow, but they were constantly on the move, which was a good sign.
Partway through, the helicopter’s fuel ran low, and it had to drop Shen Xin and the others off.
Conveniently, the main group had also circled around via the highway and was arriving.
Just before noon, the coyotes stopped.
There was no need for them to come find Shen Xin; Teddy, scouting from the air, had already figured out what they were looking for.
It was a pack of gray wolves on the edge of the forest.
There were quite a few of them—a quick count revealed ten or so.
The coyotes didn’t dare get any closer, observing from a distance. The male ran over to Shen Xin and began yipping urgently.
"What’s he trying to say?" York asked urgently.
Shen Xin had no idea either. He observed the pack of gray wolves through Teddy’s eyes.
About half of the wolves in the pack were black.
That didn’t mean they had found their target, though.
Shen Xin had done his research on the subject. Gray wolves, despite their name, actually came in two primary colors: gray and black.
Furthermore, the coloration was related to their geographic region.
Farther north, in Alaska and the northern Rocky Mountains, gray was the predominant color.
Here around Yellowstone National Park, however, the population was split about evenly between black and gray.
Zoologists had even studied this phenomenon and published papers on it.
They theorized that periodic canine distemper outbreaks near Yellowstone National Park led to a strange outcome: even though gray-on-gray pairings had a higher reproductive success rate, the wolves still preferred to mate with black-furred partners.
This ultimately resulted in the large population of black-colored gray wolves seen today.
"Man, these things are huge," Lin Wei muttered from nearby, unable to help himself.
Shen Xin nodded in complete agreement.
These were, after all, the largest species of wolf on the planet, and they were far bigger than he had imagined.
He’d seen a moose earlier, and that was a whole other level—the thing was as tall as a small house.
At that moment, watching the male coyote’s reactions, Shen Xin slowly began to piece together its intentions.
The coyote was performing a series of actions, such as miming being attacked and falling to the ground.
’You didn’t bring me here for revenge, did you?’
The thought struck Shen Xin, leaving him speechless.
’Could it be that this pack of coyotes was attacked by these gray wolves and forced to migrate north of the Grovantre Wilderness just to survive?’
’And now he’s found a new boss—a powerful one, at that, who comes with his own crew and even some hardware.’
’So this little guy got the idea to get some payback.’
’Coyotes... they have long memories and a tendency to hold grudges.’
The coyote seemed to understand, because it began yipping with excitement.
’Yep, no doubt about it. This little guy really did drag me all the way out here to get his revenge.’
"You’re really something else!"
Shen Xin gave its flank an exasperated slap.
