Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 583 - 573: Sound Source Pollution 25
Hearing Moira Lynch’s answer, the questioning officer exchanged a look with his partner.
Three in the morning matched the time they had learned about.
"So, did you open the door?" he continued to ask.
"Of course not," Moira Lynch said matter-of-factly. "Someone knocking on the door in the middle of the night, and that forcefully? They definitely weren’t up to any good."
"If you suspected they weren’t up to any good, why didn’t you call the police?"
’Call the police? And have you guys show up as cannon fodder?’
Moira Lynch scoffed internally, but of course, she couldn’t say that out loud.
"I was about to call the police, but the knocking suddenly stopped. My brother and I waited for a while, but there wasn’t another sound from outside. Since it was so late and nothing else happened, we decided against it."
The officer found her explanation a little strange. After all, a young woman who had just come of age, encountering something like this in an unfamiliar place, should have been terrified.
Yet Moira Lynch’s attitude suggested she wasn’t bothered by last night’s events at all.
Then again, Moira Lynch wasn’t alone. And considering some people were just naturally unfazed, her explanation wasn’t entirely unreasonable.
He also recalled the file he’d read on the pair before arriving. They’d lost their parents at a young age, and the older brother, Hugh Finch, had raised his sister himself. To avoid being bullied, the siblings had started learning to use various weapons and mastering different forms of hand-to-hand combat from a young age.
Although neither of them had a criminal record, it was clear they were far more formidable than the average person.
The officer asked a few more questions, but Moira Lynch brushed them all off with vague answers.
Just before he left, Moira Lynch suddenly asked, "Can I ask something? The person who knocked on our door yesterday... it wasn’t the murderer, was it?"
The officer nodded. "He’s no longer in the hotel. You and your brother are safe for now, Miss Lynn."
Moira Lynch thanked the officer, "Thank you for letting me know."
After closing the door, she walked over to the table, grabbed an object, and hurled it toward the location of the last listening device.
With a sharp CRACK, the cup she’d thrown shattered, taking the bug with it.
Just then, Hugh Finch walked out of his room.
Seeing the last bug destroyed, he asked, "Upset?"
At his words, Moira Lynch ran a hand through her hair, flopping onto the sofa in frustration. "I’m just suddenly so bored. I’m losing my patience. When the hell is this stupid game going to end!"
As Moira Lynch’s temper flared, her spiritual power began to surge uncontrollably.
Sensing Moira Lynch’s distress, Hugh Finch quickly soothed her, "It’ll be over soon. Have you forgotten why I joined this game in the first place?"
After a few minutes, Moira Lynch’s emotions gradually stabilized.
The bout of negativity had come as quickly as it went.
Now, Moira Lynch even felt she’d been acting a little stupid just now.
Just as Moira Lynch was reflecting on her behavior, the doorbell suddenly rang.
DING-DONG—
Hugh Finch glanced at Moira Lynch, his eyes asking, ’Are they here for you?’
Moira Lynch shook her head. "I didn’t call for room service."
Due to the "noise syndrome," the hotel was short-staffed. Even the cleaning crew no longer came by daily; guests had to call the front desk if they needed service.
And they charged extra for it, too.
The same went for room service.
DING-DONG, DING-DONG—
The doorbell rang again, twice in quick succession this time, as if urging them to hurry up and open the door.
"Probably the police who just left," Moira said. "Or the people watching us. After all, they did just lose their last bug."
Puzzled, Hugh Finch went to open the door.
At the door stood a man he’d never seen before. Judging by his uniform, he was a member of the hotel staff.
He glanced at Hugh Finch, an unsettling expression on his face. His gaze roamed over Hugh before finally landing on Moira Lynch in the distance.
"Do you require any assistance?"
Hugh Finch noticed his stare and said coldly, "We don’t need any help. Please leave immediately."
"Really?"
The corners of the staffer’s mouth stretched wide, then split down the middle, like a grotesque cleft.
Inside his mouth were rows of razor-sharp teeth and a long, barbed tongue. He looked like a monster straight out of a horror film.
"But I can smell it... the scent of food. You’re Awakeners, too. If I eat you, I can become..."
The staffer didn’t get to finish his sentence. His voice cut off abruptly as an ice needle shot through the center of his forehead, pinning him to the wall. His life vanished in an instant.
This just goes to show: if you’re going to make a move, just do it. Don’t waste time on pointless monologues.
Fortunately, theirs was the only occupied room on this floor, and with a murder having just occurred downstairs, no one was likely to come up and investigate the noise, even if they heard it.
"Looks like we can’t stay here any longer," Hugh Finch said.
Moira Lynch walked over and looked down at the corpse. The mutation on his face hadn’t vanished upon death.
"I’ve read about this kind of ability on the Astranet before," she said. "It’s called Heteromorphosis. It manifests as a physical transformation of a part of the body."
It’s different from Body Fortification, which strengthens the entire body or a specific part to make a person more powerful.
Heteromorphosis, on the other hand, is more like a radiation-induced mutation, causing parts of the body to become inhuman.
Things like hands turning into tentacles are just minor examples.
"I’m wondering... could my emotional outburst have drawn him here?"
She thought about her sudden loss of control just a short while ago.
Most people would have written it off as a coincidence, but Moira Lynch didn’t think so.
In any case, it was already the fourteenth day. According to Hugh Finch’s divination, they would be able to leave this place on the fifteenth day and move into the bomb shelter they’d already prepared.
Having decided to leave, the two of them quickly packed and wiped the room clean of any trace that they had ever been there.
Then, just as they had on the previous days, they drove out of the garage.
The only difference was that this time, they weren’t coming back.
However, they didn’t head for the bomb shelter. After all, it was still only the fourteenth day.
