Chapter 309: Chapter 158: Pursuit

Xu Mo nodded, but he also realized another problem. Luo Li no longer had any zombies under her control. If they couldn’t deal with the hidden enemy this time, the settlement could face even greater danger in the future.

After all, that thing had already targeted them. Luo Li had clearly thought of this as well.

"So," her voice was soft, "we have to find it. We have to deal with it."

Xu Mo didn’t say anything, simply continuing forward.

After walking for about another ten minutes, Luo Li’s expression suddenly changed.

Xu Mo immediately stopped, holding the Triangular Spike horizontally in front of him.

"What is it?"

"There’s a scout," Luo Li whispered, her voice low. "The enemy’s scout."

Xu Mo frowned.

"How do you know?"

"I just fought for control over a regular zombie," Luo Li said. "It was one of the enemy’s scouts."

Xu Mo was silent for a second, then nodded.

’This is normal. Luo Li puts zombies out as scouts, so of course that thing would too. Since we’ve entered its territory, it was only a matter of time before we were discovered.’

"Let’s go," Xu Mo said. "Pick up the pace."

The three of them quickened their steps.

But they had gone less than two hundred meters when the sound of hurried footsteps came from behind.

Xu Mo looked back and saw a Level 3 Agility Type zombie bursting out of the ruins, running on all fours at an incredible speed. It was slightly smaller than the previous one, but faster, darting through the rubble like a phantom.

The distance was about three hundred meters.

Without hesitation, Xu Mo let go of Luo Li’s hand and drew his Barrett.

BANG!

The gunshot echoed through the ruins. Three hundred meters away, the head of the Level 3 Agility Type zombie burst apart. Its headless body continued forward for a few meters due to inertia before collapsing with a crash.

Xu Mo holstered his rifle, glanced at Luo Li, and continued forward. Luo Li met his gaze but said nothing.

But this time, they had barely walked for five minutes when there was another stir behind them. This time, it was two Level 3 Zombies—one Agility Type and one Strength Type. They were flanking them from different directions, clearly attempting a pincer attack.

Xu Mo repeated his previous move, raising his Barrett and dispatching both Level 3 Zombies.

As the two Level 3 Zombies fell, a strange light flashed in Luo Li’s eyes. She had only seen Xu Mo kill that Level 3 Scale Beast from a distance before. Now, seeing him kill a Level 3 Agility Type and a Level 3 Strength Type in quick succession up close, the shock was completely different.

"Your marksmanship is..." she couldn’t help but start.

"Practice," Xu Mo replied curtly and continued forward.

Another twenty minutes passed, and no more Level 3 Zombies came after them. Xu Mo knew that the thing had given up.

’Not given up on the hunt, but given up on this wasteful method. Level 3 Zombies are its elite forces; every one lost is a huge blow. Rather than sending them one by one to their deaths, it would be better to—’

Before Xu Mo could finish his thought, the sound of something slicing through the air came from his right.

He sidestepped and swung his Triangular Spike.

CLANG!

A Level 1 Agility Type zombie was knocked back, stumbling a few steps. Its eyes were filled with madness, devoid of any fear, and it lunged again.

Xu Mo ran it through the head with his spike and kicked the corpse away.

But in that instant, two more Agility Type zombies charged out from the ruins to the right.

"Luo Li!" Xu Mo shouted.

Luo Li understood immediately. A wave of psychic energy spread out, instantly enveloping the two Agility Type zombies. Their movements paused for less than a second, but it was enough.

Xu Mo’s Triangular Spike shot out like lightning.

THWACK! THWACK!

Two heads were pierced, and three zombies fell.

But Xu Mo’s brow furrowed as he looked to the right. Deep within that stretch of ruins, he could vaguely make out more figures stirring. They were all Level 1 Agility Type zombies, at least a dozen of them. They appeared in twos and threes, approaching unhurriedly.

’This isn’t about killing us. It’s about stalling us.’

"They’re stalling for time," Xu Mo said.

Luo Li nodded. She had figured it out too.

"Should we change direction?" she asked.

Xu Mo shook his head.

"No need." His gaze shifted to the ruins on the right. "The fact that they’re coming from this direction means our target is likely in this direction as well."

Luo Li paused for a moment, then it dawned on her.

"You mean..."

"We pursue," Xu Mo cut her off. "Keep heading this way."

The three of them continued forward.

This time, however, Xu Mo didn’t have Luo Li fight for control over the attacking zombies. Instead, he had her focus on sensing the enemy’s presence while he killed the zombies himself.

Luo Li nodded, closed her eyes, and focused all her effort on maintaining the wave of psychic energy, spreading it out in all directions. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ

Xu Mo held Luo Li with one hand and his Triangular Spike with the other, moving swiftly forward.

The Agility Type zombies that rushed them in twos and threes were like paper in front of Xu Mo. His Triangular Spike became a blur of lightning, each thrust piercing a skull. His pace barely faltered; the zombies couldn’t even slow him down.

Black blood splattered as bodies piled up.

Xu Mo weaved through the ruins like a shadow of death reaping souls. His movements were fluid and effortless, as if the zombies weren’t there to kill him, but to offer themselves up for slaughter.

Pulled along by him, Luo Li was practically floating. Even more miraculously, Tiantian, holding onto Luo Li, managed to keep up on her short little legs. It was truly incredible.

Her eyes were closed as she focused completely on sensing her surroundings. The wave of psychic energy penetrated the ruins, the buildings, and the dense hordes of zombies, extending far into the distance.
