Chapter 310: Chapter 158: Pursuit
They walked for quite a while longer. As they reached the entrance of a city park, Luo Li’s eyes shot open.
"I’ve sensed it!"
Xu Mo stopped in his tracks.
"Where?"
"In this direction!" Luo Li’s voice trembled with excitement. "About five kilometers away! But—"
Her expression suddenly changed.
"It’s running!"
Xu Mo’s pupils constricted slightly.
’Running?’
’That thing is running?’
’It sent so many zombies to intercept us, but it’s running away itself?’
"It knows I’ve sensed it," Luo Li said hurriedly. "It’s fleeing! It’s so fast—I can’t sense it anymore!"
"Chase."
Xu Mo didn’t hesitate.
He grabbed Luo Li’s wrist, and she, in turn, instinctively grabbed Tiantian and the other two. In an instant, they broke into a full-speed sprint.
Perhaps sensing that Xu Mo was attempting a decapitation strike, the zombies blocking their path were no longer just scattered individuals, but came swarming in hordes from all directions. Some charged from the front, others flanked from the sides, and some even crawled out from cracks in the ruins, attempting to launch sneak attacks.
But against Xu Mo, it was all useless.
He pulled Luo Li with one hand and gripped his Triangular Spike with the other, continuing his rapid advance.
A level-one Agility Type zombie lunged from the front, its speed astonishingly fast, its sharp claws aimed straight for Xu Mo’s throat.
Without even looking, Xu Mo flicked his Triangular Spike upward from below.
The tip of the spike pierced through the zombie’s lower jaw and exited through the back of its skull. The entire motion was as swift as a bolt of lightning. The zombie didn’t even have time for a second move before it was reduced to a corpse.
With a flick of his wrist, Xu Mo sent the body flying, smashing it into another charging zombie.
The zombie that was hit stumbled back two steps. Before it could regain its footing, the Triangular Spike had already pierced its eye socket. The tip tore through its brain and protruded half an inch from the back of its skull, dark blood gushing from the fuller.
Another one lunged from the side. Xu Mo sidestepped, dodging its claws, and thrust his Triangular Spike with a backhand motion, piercing its temple.
Xu Mo’s pace didn’t falter in the slightest. He pulled Luo Li along, speeding through the ruins, his Triangular Spike constantly lashing out, claiming a zombie’s life with every strike.
The zombies were like moths to a flame, charging forward one after another, only to be cut down one after another. Their corpses littered the path Xu Mo carved, and streams of black blood spread through the ruins.
But Xu Mo’s speed did not decrease at all.
A Strength Zombie charged from the front, its massive frame like an out-of-control truck. Before it even got close, it raised its thick arm high, preparing to smash Xu Mo into a pulp. Behind it, three Agility Type zombies followed, flanking from both sides.
Xu Mo’s gaze sharpened. Instead of dodging, he met the charge head-on.
The moment the Strength Zombie’s arm came down, he ducked slightly and thrust his Triangular Spike straight forward—its tip pierced through the zombie’s lower jaw, plunged into its brain, and exited from the back of its skull.
At the same time, the three Agility Type zombies had closed in. Xu Mo pulled out his weapon, spun, and swept the Triangular Spike horizontally. The blade flashed, and two heads flew into the air simultaneously. The two headless bodies continued to charge forward a few steps out of inertia, black blood fountaining from their severed necks before they collapsed with a thud.
The third one lunged from the side. Xu Mo sidestepped to avoid it and stabbed backward with his Triangular Spike, piercing its temple.
Four zombies, all annihilated in less than five seconds.
Xu Mo didn’t even break his stride.
Another horde of zombies charged, this time consisting of three Agility Types, three Strength Types, and two unidentifiable mutants.
They attacked from three directions at once, clearly trying to overwhelm Xu Mo with sheer numbers.
Xu Mo’s eyes were as cold as ice. He let go of Luo Li’s hand and pushed off, his entire body shooting into the zombie horde like a bolt of lightning.
In his hands, the Triangular Spike became a vortex of death. Every thrust pierced a skull. Every retraction brought another zombie down. He weaved through the horde, his movements so fast his trajectory was nearly impossible to follow.
An Agility Type zombie lunged. Pierced.
Two Agility Type zombies lunged at the same time. He sidestepped the first one’s claws while simultaneously piercing the second one’s skull with his Triangular Spike, then yanked it back and smoothly stabbed it into the back of the first zombie’s head.
Three Strength Type zombies charged from the front. Xu Mo didn’t dodge, but met them head-on. Before the first one’s fist could land, his Triangular Spike had already plunged into its eye socket. He then used its body as a Shield to block the second one’s charge, while simultaneously stabbing out from under the corpse’s armpit to pierce the second zombie’s throat. Before the third could even react, Xu Mo’s Triangular Spike had already entered its lower jaw.
Two mutants tried to ambush him from behind. Without turning his head, he swung the Triangular Spike backward, and two heads burst on impact.
Eight zombies, all down in the span of a few breaths.
Xu Mo retrieved his Triangular Spike, took Luo Li’s hand again, and continued forward.
Pulled along by Xu Mo, Luo Li could barely feel herself moving.
Her eyes were closed as she focused all her effort on maintaining the psychic fluctuations, sensing the creature’s location. She could hear the sounds of slaughter all around her, but she didn’t dare open her eyes or let her concentration waver. She could only trust Xu Mo, trust that he could block every attack.
Suddenly, that familiar psychic fluctuation appeared again.
Luo Li’s eyes shot open.
"I’ve sensed it!"
Xu Mo’s pace faltered slightly.
"Where?"
"Straight ahead!" Luo Li’s voice trembled with excitement. "It’s still running, but it has slowed down!"
Xu Mo’s eyes lit up. ’It’s slowed down.’
’What does this mean? It could mean the thing is running out of stamina, that it’s injured, or maybe it’s hesitating about whether to keep fleeing.’
’Whatever the reason, this is our chance.’
"Chase!"
Xu Mo sped up again.
The intercepting zombies grew even more frenzied.
They seemed to sense their master was in danger and began to charge recklessly. Some came from the front, others from the sides, and some even leaped down from the ruins overhead, attempting to block Xu Mo’s path with their bodies.
But against Xu Mo, it was all useless.
In his hands, the Triangular Spike was no longer just a weapon, but an extension of his body. Every swing felled a zombie. Every retraction drew a line of black blood. Xu Mo’s pace grew faster and faster; the zombies couldn’t even manage to slow him down in the slightest.
A surging tide of Qi and blood coursed through Xu Mo’s body like an inexhaustible river. His strength, speed, and reflexes had all increased by at least fifty percent. The level-two zombies that once might have given him some trouble were now not even worthy of his serious attention.
KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL!!!
Another wave of zombies was crushed, but Xu Mo’s pace didn’t falter for a second.
Behind him, Luo Li kept sensing the creature’s position.
"Three and a half kilometers to go!"
"Three kilometers!"
"Two and a half kilometers!"
Xu Mo’s eyes grew brighter and brighter.
’Almost there!’
When the distance closed to two kilometers, Luo Li’s voice rang out again.
"It stopped!"
Xu Mo’s pupils constricted slightly.
’It stopped?’
’The thing finally stopped running.’
"It’s..." Luo Li’s voice trembled. "It’s waiting for us."
Xu Mo said nothing, only thinking to himself, ’Then you’ll get your wish.’
Letting go of Luo Li’s hand, Xu Mo reached back and drew his Barrett, firing a single shot at the tallest ruined building ahead.
BOOM—!!!
The gunshot exploded through the ruins, its echo lingering for a long time.
This wasn’t a shot to kill, but a shot to answer.
It was to tell that thing: we’re here.
Xu Mo put away his rifle, took Luo Li’s hand again, and charged forward.
Ahead, deep within that ruined building shrouded in shadows, their unknown enemy was waiting.
