Chapter 313: Chapter 159: Surging Tide
They charged this way, their target clear—Xu Mo.
But Xu Mo’s eyes lit up.
’Five Level 3 Zombies. That thing finally lost its patience.’
Xu Mo had just been wondering how many elite fighters the enemy had left. Now, the answer was delivering itself right to his door.
"Stick with me."
Xu Mo tightened his grip on Luo Li’s hand, pulling her and Tiantian back to create a dozen-meter gap between them and the wave of common zombies they were still entangled with. The common zombies roared and tried to give chase, but they were far too slow to catch up.
Xu Mo paid them no mind, instead drawing the Barrett slung across his back.
The heavy rifle settled into his hands, and its familiar weight calmed him completely. Xu Mo worked the bolt, sliding a gleaming brass .50-caliber round into the chamber. He raised the muzzle, and the scope’s crosshairs locked steadily onto the five figures sprinting toward them from four or five hundred meters away.
Luo Li stood behind him, unleashing her mental waves with all her might. She wasn’t trying to seize control of the Level 3 Zombies—she couldn’t, nor was there any need. Her only goal was to interfere and sow chaos.
Through the scope, the five Level 3 Zombies grew steadily closer.
They had clearly sensed the danger. The two Agility Zombies began to zigzag erratically, attempting to throw off his aim. The two Strength Zombies used their massive bodies to shield their companions. As for the Scale Beast, it simply dropped to all fours, its speed suddenly surging as it charged forward like a dark-green tank.
But Xu Mo’s crosshairs remained firmly locked on the head of the leading Agility Zombie.
"BANG!"
The roar of the Barrett thundered over the ruins!
A .50-caliber Armor-Piercing Bullet erupted from the muzzle, tearing an invisible path of death through the air. The Agility Zombie, still in the middle of a sharp turn, had no time to react before the bullet drilled precisely into its skull!
"SPLAT!"
The head instantly burst like a watermelon struck by a sledgehammer. Its headless body continued forward on momentum for another dozen meters before slamming into a broken wall and crashing to the ground.
Xu Mo rapidly worked the bolt, minutely adjusted his aim, and locked onto the second Agility Zombie.
The zombie was clearly spooked by its companion’s death—it began zigzagging even more frantically, leaping and weaving through the ruins so fast its movements were a blur. But to Xu Mo’s eyes, its path was perfectly clear.
"BANG!"
The second Agility Zombie’s head exploded on cue. Its body, caught mid-leap, went rigid in the air before plummeting like a kite with a severed string. It smashed onto the ground, motionless.
Xu Mo worked the bolt, chambering another round. ’Now for the Strength Types.’
The two Strength Zombies clearly sensed the danger. They abandoned their charge and tried to duck behind the ruins, but they were too large and too slow. In this relatively open area, there was nowhere for them to hide.
"BANG! BANG!!"
The heads of the two Strength Zombies burst. Their massive bodies swayed for a moment before crashing to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Of the five Level 3 Zombies, only the Scale Beast remained.
Xu Mo swung the barrel toward it. The Scale Beast had clearly realized what was happening. It halted its charge, its cold, slitted pupils fixed on Xu Mo, brimming with vicious hatred and madness. It opened its massive maw and let out a deafening roar—
"ROAR—!"
Then it turned to flee. Xu Mo’s eyes grew cold.
’Running?’
"BANG!"
The bullet tore through the back of the Scale Beast’s skull and out its forehead. Its massive body lurched forward two steps, then crashed to the ground, kicking up a plume of dust.
Five Level 3 Zombies, eliminated with five shots.
Xu Mo lowered the rifle and straightened up.
Luo Li stood behind him, her eyes wide in disbelief. She had seen Xu Mo use the Barrett to kill Level 3 Zombies before, but never with such a rapid, clean-cut efficiency.
Five shots, five Level 3 Zombies, all in less than five seconds.
’What kind of marksmanship was that?’
Xu Mo offered no explanation. He simply slung the Barrett back over his shoulder, drew his Triangular Spike, and took Luo Li’s hand once more.
"Let’s go."
The three of them pressed forward.
The common zombies still wandering nearby tried to pounce, but with every flash of Xu Mo’s Triangular Spike, one after another fell.
The trio’s pace quickened. Xu Mo could feel it now, too—the thing was not far ahead.
As he pulled her along, Luo Li focused all her energy on sensing the enemy’s position. The mental presence was growing clearer and more intense—
"It’s close." Her voice trembled slightly. "Very close..."
Xu Mo didn’t say a word, only quickening his pace.
Wave after wave of zombies was cut down.
Xu Mo’s hand remained steady on his Triangular Spike. Before him, the zombies were like stalks of wheat, surging forward in waves only to be reaped in droves. A stream of black blood had already submerged his ankles, and their path was paved with shredded flesh and severed limbs, but he just moved silently onward. Forward. And forward again.
Suddenly, Xu Mo felt a slight pressure on his left hand.
It was Luo Li’s hand. She was trembling.
’It wasn’t a tremble of fear, but another, more complex emotion—excitement? Nerves? Or something else entirely?’
Xu Mo didn’t ask. He simply squeezed Luo Li’s hand and kept moving forward.
Ahead, in the shadows of the ruins, the enemy that held Luochuan City in its grip lay in wait.
