Chapter 312: Chapter 159: Surging Tide

At first, the zombies besieging them were mainly Level 1 Agility and Level 1 Strength types, with a few Level 2s mixed in. But now, ordinary zombies were charging at the front, with only a few scattered Level 1 mutants mixed into the horde.

"Luo Li," Xu Mo said, piercing through an ordinary zombie.

"Hmm?" Luo Li’s voice was a little weak, but still clear.

"Have you noticed?" Xu Mo said. "Their zombies aren’t endless."

Luo Li was silent for a second, then nodded. She understood what Xu Mo meant.

’The number of zombies that thing can control is limited. At first, it sent its elites—Level 1s and Level 2s—hoping to take the three of them out as quickly as possible. But after they killed batch after batch of those elites, it realized its high-end combat power was rapidly dwindling. That’s why it started using ordinary zombies to pad its numbers.’

’Those ordinary zombies have low combat power and move slowly. In front of Xu Mo, they don’t even qualify as cannon fodder. But there are a huge number of them, enough to stall for time, wear down Xu Mo’s stamina, and buy that thing more time... to escape.’

"It’s trying to wear us down," Luo Li said.

"Right." Xu Mo impaled a lunging ordinary zombie. "But that’s actually a good thing."

"A good thing?"

"It means it’s getting desperate," Xu Mo said. "It’s running out of high-end forces."

Luo Li’s eyes brightened slightly.

’Xu Mo was right. If that thing still had enough Level 3 and Level 2 zombies, it would never be sending this cannon fodder to their deaths. The fact that it was doing this now could only mean one thing—its forces were also about to hit rock bottom.’

Another wave of zombies surged forward. This time, ordinary zombies were still at the front, but Xu Mo noticed something strange about the Level 1 mutants mixed in with them.

They weren’t pouncing madly like before. Instead, they were hiding behind the ordinary zombies, staring at him with a bizarre, almost cunning look in their eyes. They were waiting, searching for an opening.

Xu Mo’s gaze sharpened. He remembered the Level 3 Agility Type zombie that had disguised itself as a Strength Type. He had nearly paid the price for his assumptions back then.

’He wouldn’t make the same mistake twice.’

"Luo Li," Xu Mo lowered his voice, "be careful. Something’s off with those Level 1 mutants."

Luo Li nodded.

Another batch of zombies charged to within ten meters. Luo Li’s psychic waves spread out.

The movements of the ordinary zombies halted at once, but some of the mutants mixed in at the back didn’t stop. Instead, they seized the opportunity to accelerate their charge.

’So it was a trap!’ Xu Mo’s eyes turned cold.

He didn’t panic and retreat. Instead, he took a step forward, his Triangular Spike sweeping out.

The first mutant to charge forward looked like an ordinary Level 1 Agility Type zombie, but its speed was astonishing, far surpassing a normal Level 1. The instant Xu Mo’s Triangular Spike thrust out, its body twisted at a bizarre angle, narrowly avoiding a fatal blow. The Triangular Spike only sliced a gash on its shoulder, sending black blood spurting out.

The zombie let out a roar, its sharp claws swiping straight for Xu Mo’s throat.

But Xu Mo was prepared. The moment he made the first thrust, his body was already turning. As the zombie dodged, he retracted his Triangular Spike and, using the momentum from his spin, thrust out from another angle. This time, there was no escape.

The tip of the spike pierced through its brain and exited the back of its skull. The light in the zombie’s eyes vanished in a flash, and it collapsed lifelessly.

Xu Mo didn’t stop. He continued his spin, and the Triangular Spike thrust out again, meeting the second charging mutant.

This mutant’s defenses far surpassed an ordinary Level 1 zombie’s. When Xu Mo’s Triangular Spike pierced its skull, he felt a surprising resistance. Its skull was much harder than an ordinary zombie’s.

But the resistance lasted only for an instant. Unleashing his full power, Xu Mo forcibly pierced through the hard skull with his Triangular Spike, penetrating its brain.

The second one fell.

The third, the fourth, the fifth—

The zombies disguised as low-level mutants pounced one after another, only to fall one after another. Their disguises were meaningless before Xu Mo.

Xu Mo put his full strength into every strike, holding nothing back. He gave the zombies no chance to counterattack and left no opening for a sneak attack on himself. Thrust, withdraw, thrust again—each movement ensured the target was completely dead.

When the last disguised zombie fell, Xu Mo’s breathing was still steady.

He glanced at the corpses on the ground to make sure none had escaped, then took Luo Li’s hand again and continued forward.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

"I’m fine." There was a hint of surprise in Luo Li’s voice. "How did you know there was something wrong with them?"

"Learned the hard way," Xu Mo answered succinctly.

Luo Li didn’t press further.

"ROAR—!!!"

Suddenly, a roar came from the distance.

The sound was completely different from that of an ordinary zombie—deeper, richer, and carrying an indescribable pressure. It pierced through layers of ruins and the dense horde of zombies, reaching Xu Mo’s ears directly.

Xu Mo faltered for a moment. He knew from the roar alone that it was a Level 3 Zombie—and more than one. He whipped his head around to look in the direction it came from.

Four or five hundred meters away, five figures were sprinting through the zombie horde. They ignored the ordinary zombies in their path, simply smashing them aside as they charged toward Xu Mo and Luo Li’s position.

Five Level 3 Zombies.

Two Agility Types, two Strength Types, and one Scale Beast. Its dark green scales glinted coldly under the sun, and foul-smelling saliva dripped from its massive, ferocious maw with its jutting underbite.
