Chapter 370 - 177: New Zombie
Chapter 370: Chapter 177: New Zombie
Xu Mo drew the Triangular Spike from his waist and prodded the tongue with its tip.
This prod revealed something even stranger: the tongue could actually fork.
But because Xu Mo had been too fast, blowing its head apart with a single shot, it never got the chance to show him what its tongue could do.
This was a new type of zombie Xu Mo had encountered, and its level wasn’t low.
Based on its speed and reflexes, it was at least a Level 3, and possibly even stronger than a typical Level 3 Zombie. The reason for this assessment was its ability to struggle even after being shot twice. That kind of vitality surpassed any of the Level 3 Zombies Xu Mo had seen before.
After examining the zombie, Xu Mo stood up and glanced at the stairwell.
The stairwell was a complete mess, covered in bloodstains and chunks of flesh. The acrid smell of blood filled the air.
However, Xu Mo didn’t leave right away. He kept his rifle raised and continued to wait at the top of the stairs.
A Barrett’s report was anything but quiet. The three shots he’d just fired in the enclosed stairwell had boomed, and the sound had certainly carried. It was possible other zombies had heard it and would come charging up.
Three minutes, five minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes...
There was no movement, no footsteps, no roars.
At this point, Xu Mo was certain that no other zombies were coming.
’It makes sense,’ he thought. ’This is the thirty-third floor. Even if the sound attracted the zombies, they still have to consider the practicalities. Not every zombie is that powerful.’
Letting out a sigh of relief, Xu Mo turned back, gathered a pile of junk, and used it to barricade the door securely.
This way, even if any zombies tried to get up, it would take them considerable effort to push through the pile of junk.
Only after finishing this did Xu Mo walk back to the window.
This time, he didn’t stand directly in front of the window. Instead, he stood to the side, using his peripheral vision to observe the street below. He had no desire to make eye contact with another zombie. If another Level 3 Zombie appeared, or even two or three, he’d be in serious trouble.
He didn’t have Luo Li’s ability to control zombies. He had to be careful when facing a naturally-developed Level 3 Zombie on his own.
The zombies on the street were still packed shoulder to shoulder, reveling in the rain. Raindrops fell from the sky, spattering against their bodies and running down their rotting skin to the ground.
Xu Mo’s gaze swept over the zombies as he quickly calculated in his mind, ’How long is this rain going to last?’
’If it keeps coming down like this, will I be trapped and die in this building? Even if the rain stops, will the zombies disperse?’
’And then there’s the fuel problem...’
One question after another flooded his mind, causing his brow to furrow even more deeply.
But there was nothing Xu Mo could do right now. The only thing he could do was wait.
...
The rain fell all day, and Xu Mo waited on the thirty-third floor all day.
Throughout the day, he repeatedly walked to the window, using his peripheral vision to observe the situation below. The zombies never dispersed. It was as if the rain had cast some kind of Magic on them, and they reveled and roared in the downpour.
By evening, the rain finally stopped. It was as if someone had turned off a faucet; the sound of the downpour came to an abrupt halt, and the entire world fell silent.
Xu Mo walked to the window and looked down from the side.
The zombies on the street began to slowly spread out. Some returned to the buildings, while others began to wander aimlessly. The number of visible zombies was significantly lower, but they were still not to be underestimated.
The next morning, Xu Mo went to the window again.
The sky was exceptionally clear after the rain. The sun rose from the east, casting down its warm light.
Standing to the side, Xu Mo used his peripheral vision to observe the street below. The number of zombies was even lower than the day before. The street was sparse, with only a few scattered zombies wandering about. Most of them were gone, having either returned to the buildings or gone elsewhere.
Seeing this, Xu Mo breathed a sigh of relief. This was good news for him.
Just then, Xu Mo felt something was off.
He couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but the feeling was distinct. Taking a deep breath, Xu Mo tried to recall exactly what had changed. As he inhaled, he realized the air no longer had that scorching heat.
In its place was a mild, refreshing coolness, like the crisp air of early morning.
Xu Mo froze for a moment, then hurried over to his backpack and pulled out a thermometer.
The screen displayed a number: thirty degrees.
Thirty degrees!
Xu Mo stared at the number for a good few seconds.
Thirty degrees. This was several degrees lower than the past few days. Back in the desert, the in-car thermometer had often been off the charts. Even after leaving the desert, the temperature had consistently remained above forty degrees.
Thirty degrees was the lowest temperature Xu Mo had seen recently.
Realizing this was the problem, Xu Mo’s expression turned grim. A drop in temperature was not a good thing for survivors.
Why hadn’t the zombies dared to come out during the day on his journey here? Why did they hide motionless inside buildings? It was because of the high temperatures!
The heat dehydrated and weakened the zombies, forcing them to lie dormant.
But if the temperature dropped, the situation would change completely. The zombies would become active again. They would no longer need to hide from the sun or wait until night to come out. They would be free to move around during the day, roaming and hunting for prey.
Xu Mo looked out the window at the few scattered zombies slowly wandering in the sunlight. Though there weren’t many now, if the temperature continued to fall, their numbers would grow, and they would become more and more active. When that happened, humanity’s living space would be compressed even further.
