Chapter 386: Chapter 182: Pursuit

The sun was setting, dyeing the wilderness a brilliant gold.

Xu Mo was driving along the road when his brow suddenly furrowed.

In the rearview mirror, a black dot appeared on the distant horizon. The dot was moving fast, closing in on his position.

Xu Mo narrowed his eyes, observing it carefully.

The black dot grew larger, its outline gradually becoming clear. It was a black SUV, moving at high speed and rapidly closing the distance between them.

’Looks like they’re not here to make friends.’

Xu Mo muttered to himself, his hands already tightening on the steering wheel.

In the rearview mirror, the black SUV grew closer. Xu Mo could now see it clearly. It was a modified Wrangler, tall and imposing with thick, wide tires. The windows were covered with a dark film, making it impossible to see inside.

The distance between them quickly shrank to about a hundred meters. Just then, Xu Mo saw the SUV’s passenger-side window roll down. A figure leaned out, holding a rifle, the barrel aimed right at him.

’So much for a friendly greeting.’

Xu Mo sighed, but his eyes turned icy. He wrenched the wheel, and his black SUV swerved violently off the road. The tires rolled over the uneven, pitted ground, causing the vehicle to jolt violently. Xu Mo gripped the steering wheel tightly, fighting to maintain control.

BANG!

The sound of a gunshot came from behind.

Perhaps because the road was too bumpy, or perhaps because the shooter’s aim was mediocre, the bullet flew off to god-knows-where.

Xu Mo didn’t look back, continuing to drive deeper into the wilderness.

In his rearview mirror, the Wrangler also veered off the road in pursuit. Its off-road performance was superior, allowing it to move faster on this terrain, and the distance between the two vehicles began to close rapidly once again.

A cold glint appeared in Xu Mo’s eyes. He slammed on the brakes, grabbed the AK-47 from the passenger seat, pulled out a Triangular Spike and tucked it into his belt, then shoved the door open and dove into the tall wild grass at the side of the road.

The grass was half a man tall, a dense thicket of withered yellow blades, perfect for concealment.

The Wrangler didn’t slow down at all, charging straight for the spot where Xu Mo had disappeared. Its wheels crushed the wild grass, sending up sprays of dirt.

’Hmph!’

Xu Mo sneered, raising his AK-47 and aiming for the driver’s seat.

To shoot the rider, first shoot the horse—he knew this principle well. No matter how many enemies there were, take out the driver, and the vehicle becomes useless.

BANG!

The gunshot echoed across the wilderness. A snowflake pattern bloomed on the Wrangler’s front windshield as the glass shattered, blood spattering across the cracks. The person in the driver’s seat slumped violently to the side. The steering wheel was lost, and the vehicle instantly veered off course.

Xu Mo didn’t stop. He kept his AK-47 raised and fired a few short bursts at the passenger seat. He then saw the woman who had leaned out to shoot at him shudder before her body went limp and fell still.

The rear windows were covered in the same dark film, obscuring the view inside. But Xu Mo wasn’t careless; he fired several more bursts into the back seat area as well.

BANG! BANG!

The bullets pierced the glass, leaving behind several Black Holes.

Just then, Xu Mo’s brow suddenly furrowed.

He saw the SUV’s rear door get kicked open from the inside. As the vehicle tumbled, a figure leaped out, rolled a few times on the ground, and then disappeared into the grass.

’My last few shots didn’t take care of the enemy in the back. I gave them a chance to escape.’

Xu Mo’s heart skipped a beat. He immediately rolled away to a new position.

Sure enough, the instant Xu Mo moved, the patch of grass he had just vacated was baptized by a hail of bullets. The rounds kicked up flurries of shredded grass and sprays of dirt. If Xu Mo had still been lying there, he would have been turned into a sieve.

Xu Mo lay prone in the grass, completely still.

The gunfire came from his front-left, about seventy or eighty meters away. Judging by the precise shooting, this was no ordinary survivor.

’Interesting.’

Xu Mo narrowed his eyes.

That person had been in the back seat; they shouldn’t have been able to see his exact position. Yet they had been able to pinpoint his general location and return fire so quickly, just by the trajectory of his shots. That wasn’t a skill an ordinary person would possess.

Xu Mo had initially wanted to return fire immediately, but now he dismissed the thought.

Of course, he could also determine the enemy’s position from their trajectory, but his opponent would know that as well. The other person had surely changed position by now. Firing at this moment would be tantamount to revealing his own location, just asking for trouble.

This was no longer a simple ambush; it was a sniper duel.

Xu Mo held his breath, lying motionless in the grass.

All around was silence, broken only by the rustling of the wind through the grass.

Seventy or eighty meters away to the front-left, a man lay prone in the grass, also completely still.

His name was Zhou Hai. He was thirty-two years old, and before the apocalypse, he had been a sniper in a certain special forces unit. After the outbreak, his unit was quickly scattered. He wandered the southern wilds alone for several months before finally meeting his current team.

It wasn’t a large team, only about twenty people including him. The group had been operating in this area for over half a year without any incidents.

But today, there was an incident.

While gathering after a supply run today, they had found the bodies of two teammates. One had died next to a withered poplar tree, clearly shot straight through by a high-caliber sniper rifle. The other had a narrow wound on the back of his neck, as if pierced by a sharp weapon.

The bodies were still warm. Time of death: less than half an hour ago.

Old Zhang’s wound made him suck in a sharp breath. The bullet had passed through the tree trunk before hitting him in the chest. That meant the attacker was using Armor-Piercing Bullets, and their aim was impeccable.
