Chapter 303: Chapter 240: Isn’t This Still Creation Out of Thin Air?
"That’s good." Lin Fan nodded in understanding. "Go on, get back to work. You don’t need to hang around me."
"You got it! Just call me if you need anything!" Liu Bin didn’t stand on ceremony, his agreement crisp and clear.
He tucked the record book under his arm, turned, and trotted back to the main building with his assistant. His steps were so light they seemed to catch the wind, as if he were tireless. He didn’t look like a middle-aged man struggling to survive the apocalypse, but more like a startup executive who’d just gotten a promotion and a raise, brimming with inexhaustible energy.
They say the talent found in a single county is enough to govern a nation, and Lin Fan was only now beginning to truly understand that.
Many people who seemed ordinary in normal times had their extraordinary talents squeezed out of them amidst these ruins.
Everyone has their own talents, so naturally, everyone should have their own place.
He pulled his gaze away, turned, and looked at Ye Qingzhou, who had been standing quietly to the side.
"Colonel Ye, what do you need to know?" With a thought, Lin Fan made the long spear appear in his hand. He then extended his arm, offering it to her.
Ye Qingzhou naturally understood that Lin Fan had made his decision.
"Thank you for your trust."
She looked at Lin Fan, her normally placid eyes flickering slightly, revealing a hint of surprise.
Lin Fan stared into those flickering eyes, at his own reflection and that of the bustling camp behind him, as if trying to read her thoughts.
But he ultimately failed and could only say with a slight quirk of his lips:
"This is the second time you’ve underestimated me. I’m not a child."
Ye Qingzhou was taken aback, apparently not expecting such a response from Lin Fan.
She gave him a deep look, then pressed her lips together. Without another word, she reached out with her slender fingers and gently touched the cold shaft of the spear.
The touch was cold and dense, with the characteristic chill of metal, yet it also had a smooth, warm feel, almost like jade.
The craftsmanship of this spear was simply incredible.
From the sharp spearhead to the anti-slip texture on the grip, and even the counterweight at the butt, the entire weapon was a single, seamless piece. She carefully searched for even the slightest hint of a welding seam, a casting mold line, or the tool marks from a lathe, but she found nothing.
It was completely "monolithic."
It was as if some force had shaped it directly at the atomic level, skipping the "manufacturing" process entirely. In the modern industrial system, this would be nearly impossible for a heavy alloy weapon with such a complex structure.
"How was it created? What are the limitations on creating these things? Where does it go when it disappears? How does the energy flow within it? And most importantly..."
As she spoke, she looked up, her normally placid eyes meeting Lin Fan’s. For the first time, they held a distinct ripple of emotion.
"Where does the material come from?"
"..." Their eyes met. Lin Fan felt as if a flame in those deep pools was searing his very soul. "It’s hard to explain. Let’s do a practical demonstration... Get in the car."
He then beckoned, and the few people who had just gotten out of the vehicle filed back in. Although the others didn’t speak, their eyes all held the same curiosity.
This time, however, Ye Qingniao, Chu Zhaozhao, and Su Qing squeezed into the back, while Ye Qingzhou sat in the passenger seat. Lin Fan, meanwhile, hung onto the roll cage on the outside of the passenger side.
"Brother Lin, where to?" Cheng Qi glanced at the "audience" sitting neatly in the back, their faces full of anticipation. With his hand on the gear stick, he looked past Ye Qingzhou and asked Lin Fan, who was hanging on the outside of the vehicle.
"East, to the broken bridge..."
"You got it!"
...
The zombies on the other side of the broken bridge were still there, clustered in a dense, tightly packed horde at the edge of the gap.
The noise of the approaching vehicle agitated the horde. Occasionally, a zombie that lost its footing was pushed off the bridge and fell into the river below.
But for a horde this massive, it was just a drop in the bucket.
Before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop, a question filled with a sense of utter absurdity erupted from inside.
"...Isn’t this still just creating something from thin air?!"
After listening to Lin Fan’s "science lesson" from where he hung outside the window the entire way, Ye Qingzhou finally couldn’t take it anymore. Her voice instantly jumped an octave, even drowning out the roars of the zombies outside.
