Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 214: The Gathering Storm
The deep, rhythmic pulse of the secondary security alarms echoed through the cold concrete corridors, their muffled crimson strobes painting the smooth walls in long, rhythmic flashes of red.
Inside the children’s room in the secondary residential suite, the door opened with a click.
Su Xiao didn’t hesitate for a single second.
Overwhelmed by a sudden, electric wave of absolute joy and unyielding certainty, the five-year-old girl dashed out into the brightly lit hallway.
Her small boots slapped rapidly against the sealed floor, her pigtails bouncing as she made a beeline straight for the primary lift shaft at the end of the corridor.
"Su Xiao, wait! Stop running!" Gu An called out, her voice tight with immediate concern as she sprinted out of the room right behind her.
Xiao Mei and Han Ye fell in seamlessly on either side of Gu An. Han Ye’s face was completely dark, his dark, unblinking eyes fixed intently on the elevator doors ahead. The shadows clinging to the hem of his dark, oversized sweater seemed to stretch and writhe, sensing the violent, turbulent shift in the atmospheric energy.
At the exact same time, the primary surface blast gate was a hive of controlled, high-stress tactical mobilization. Lin Qing, Han Zheng, Song Yan, and Xiao Li converged simultaneously at the portal.
"Sun Hao, give us a continuous distance update on that thermal anomaly," Han Zheng commanded into his tactical headset, his eyes fixed on the heavy pneumatic locks of the blast gate as he racked the bolt of his newly calibrated orange-core rifle. The weapon emitted a low, satisfying hum as its primary capacitor charged to full capacity.
"Commander, it’s cutting clean through the slush at a terrifying, unnatural speed!" Sun Hao’s voice crackled through the secure comms channel from the Central Command Hub, laced with heavy static. "Five hundred meters from the outer perimeter wall... four hundred meters... it’s not veering off or taking cover! It’s heading on a direct intercept vector straight for the main outer blast gates!"
"Take defensive positions!" Lin Qing ordered smoothly, her voice remaining cool, crisp, and utterly steady despite the blaring red strobe lights.
She unholstered her sidearm with her left hand while raising the sleek receiver of her long-barreled orange-core rifle with her right, adjusting her stance to cover the primary entrance seam.
Song Yan took a heavy kneeling position behind a reinforced concrete firing barricade, his hands locking securely around the handles of his high-output heavy machine gun, while Xiao Li primed a belt of specialized thermal-impact grenades, laying them out in neat, accessible rows along the concrete ledge.
The ambient air inside the vast outer gate chamber grew thick, heavy, and charged with static electricity.
"Three hundred meters... two hundred meters... one hundred meters—" Sun Hao abruptly cut himself off over the comms loop, his sharp intake of breath catching loudly in his throat. "Wait! Stop! It stopped!"
Lin Qing’s dark eyes narrowed into tight slits, her finger resting lightly against the flat face of her rifle’s trigger guard. "Say again, Sun Hao. Did the signal drop out? What exactly happened?"
"Negative! The signal didn’t drop out—it just stopped cold!" Sun Hao replied frantically, his mechanical keyboard clacking loudly in the background as he tapped his console controls to re-verify the diagnostic telemetry. "It’s sitting right at seventy meters outside the primary blast gates. It just... stopped moving entirely. It’s standing completely still in the middle of the slush."
Before anyone in the gate chamber could process the sudden, bizarre halt of the approaching high-energy entity, the doors of the primary lift behind them slid open with a soft, melodic chime. Su Xiao burst through the threshold into the staging area, her small, pale face flushed with deep pink excitement.
"Su Xiao! Get back to the residential suite!" Xiao Li yelled out as soon as he saw her, turning on his heel and reaching out a hand to intercept the young girl.
But Su Xiao was far too nimble. She ducked effortlessly beneath Xiao Li’s sweeping guard with agile ease, her small feet flying across the concrete floor as she ran straight toward the primary blast gates.
"Mommy’s here! She’s really here!" Su Xiao squealed with pure, unadulterated delight, her bright eyes sparkling as she pressed her small, warm palms flat against the cold, reinforced blast gates. "She’s standing right outside in the snow! She came all the way here for us! I’m so happy I get to meet her soon!"
Gu An, Xiao Mei, and Han Ye stepped up to the edge of the blast gates right beside her.
Gu An placed a protective hand on Su Xiao’s shoulder, her eyes narrow and sharp as she looked at the closed blast gates.
Out in the thawing mountain terrain, absolutely nothing could be seen through the solid, seamless slab of the thick blast gates.
Yet, the high-sensitivity energy diagnostic sensors embedded directly into the concrete framework and steel seams of the gates were humming violently, their digital readouts spiking into the red zone under the sheer, suffocating density of the presence standing just seventy meters away in the slushy snow.
The stark, jarring contrast between Su Xiao’s innocent, bubbling childish excitement and the heavy, staggering magnitude of the terrifying energy signature waiting outside left every single adult standing at the gates thoroughly on edge.
"That core signature is absurdly massive," Song Yan muttered under his breath, his knuckles turning stark white as he tightened his grip around the cold steel handles of his weapon. "It’s denser and more concentrated than anything we’ve registered on our short-range sensors since I moved to this base... short of the Blue Core mutated alpha itself."
Lin Qing stepped forward, standing directly beside Su Xiao right in front of the massive reinforced steel portal. Her dark eyes remained fixed on the sealed, heavy seams of the entrance.
Her instincts were screaming at her, bracing her nervous system for an imminent breach, yet there was no active malice, predatory hostility, or chaotic energy radiating from the stationary force beyond the gates.
It didn’t seem to be charging, preparing an attack, or searching for a structural weakness. It was simply standing there in the cold, wet air—waiting.
"Commander! Sister-in-law!" Sun Hao’s voice suddenly burst through the comms loop again, far more urgent, high-pitched, and strained than before. "The long-range radar grid is going absolutely crazy! The Blue Core Alpha beyond the northern mountain ridge just broke its stationary pattern! It’s moving, and its core energy frequency is fluctuating violently—it’s acting extremely restless!"
Han Zheng stepped up right beside Lin Qing, his sharp, perceptive eyes fixed on the heavy steel face of the blast gates as he absorbed Sun Hao’s rapid report over the headset. "The Alpha is reacting directly to the presence standing outside our blast gates. It senses her energy signature just as clearly as we do."
Lin Qing’s mind raced at blinding speed, her intellect rapidly connecting the scattered pieces of the puzzle. "Why now?" she murmured softly, her voice barely audible over the deep, metallic vibration of the damp mountain runoff rattling the outer drainage ducts. "Why would Su Xiao’s mother choose this exact hour to cross the mountain pass and stand motionless at our outer gates?"
"Perhaps because of the siege," Han Zheng answered quietly, his deep voice dropping into a heavy, solemn register that carried a chilling weight. "She could have sensed that the blue core alpha was holding a massive zombie horde on standby beyond the ridge. She didn’t come here to attack our facility or test our perimeter defenses—she came because she knew her child was in grave, immediate danger."
Lin Qing looked down at Su Xiao, who was beaming with pure, radiant happiness, her small hands clasped together as she stared eagerly at the heavy steel barrier, completely oblivious to the catastrophic nightmare unfolding around them. A tight, painful knot tied itself deep inside Lin Qing’s chest.
’What is going to happen next?’ she thought, her mind churning with dark possibilities. ’If her mother steps through those blast gates and enters the base, will she be hostile or will she spare everyone because of her child? Will her presence give them protection or is her presence the very catalyst that will force this entire valley into absolute war?’
Before anyone standing at the gates could vocalize the unasked questions lingering heavily in the air, Sun Hao’s panicked voice shattered the quiet over the open link, completely stripped of its usual professional composure and calm control.
"Commander! We have a catastrophic, total radar shift across the entire regional map!" Sun Hao screamed into his microphone, the deafening blare of primary red-alert sirens wailing loudly in the background of his feed from the Command Hub.
"The dormant zombie horde beyond the northern ridge has completely broken its holding formation! They aren’t holding back or waiting for orders anymore! High-energy infected signatures are spawning across all perimeter sectors—they are surrounding our entire base from every single direction!"
