The red emergency strobes pulsed rhythmically against the cold concrete walls, casting long, frantic shadows across the pavement of the loading bay.

Outside the massive steel blast gates, the high-energy signature remained frozen in the slushy mountain runoff, while the regional diagnostic radar displays painted a grim, unyielding picture: the infected horde had broken its holding formation and was rapidly closing in from every direction.

Inside the staging area, Lin Qing did not hesitate for a fraction of a second. She turned her sharp, commanding gaze from the sealed blast gates down to the children who had just rushed down from the residential suite.

"Xiao Li," Lin Qing said, her voice cutting cleanly through the wailing sirens and the deep, metallic vibration of the base’s structural pillars. "Take the children back to the residential suite immediately."

Su Xiao’s eyes widened, a look of immediate, emotional protest flashing across her small face. "But my mommy is right outside the big doors! I want to—"

"You will meet your mother, Su Xiao," Lin Qing interrupted, stepping forward and speaking with a firm, absolute authority that brooked no argument. "The perimeter is on emergency lockdown. You have to wait safely inside until the area is secured."

Su Xiao blinked, her lower lip trembling slightly under the emotional weight, but being a remarkably sensible child, she swallowed her disappointment and nodded slowly. "Okay... I’ll wait."

Xiao Li immediately stepped forward, placing a protective hand on Su Xiao’s small shoulder to guide her. "Got it. I’ll get them back to the suite safely."

Han Ye stood a step behind the other children, his dark eyes fixed intently on Lin Qing and Han Zheng. He wanted to stay—his shadow-sensing instincts screaming that his presence and awareness would be invaluable on the line—but the heavy, suffocating tension radiating from the adults made it instantly clear that refusal was absolute. The base was officially on total lockdown, and no exceptions would be made.

Before turning to lead the group away, Lin Qing tapped her comms headset to verify the rear guard. "Guo Jiong, report."

"Standing by in the residential sector," Guo Jiong’s steady, reliable voice crackled instantly through the channel. "Depot security and I are locked down with the civilians. We’re securing the secondary suite now."

"Good. Xiao Li is escorting the children back. Lock down the residential suite and secure them," Lin Qing ordered.

With Xiao Li leading the way, the children turned and headed back toward the lift shaft. Han Ye cast one final, lingering glance at the sealed blast gates before disappearing down the corridor with the rest of the team.

The heavy elevator doors slid shut, sealing the children inside the lift as it began its smooth ascent toward the upper residential levels.

Han Zheng watched the indicator lights blink upward before turning his gaze back toward the main staging area. With the non-combatants moving safely out of the primary operational zones, he stepped fully into his role as commander, his voice ringing with absolute authority as he synchronized the defense grid alongside Lin Qing.

"Song Yan," Han Zheng called out, striding toward the depot leader standing near the blast door controls. "Hold the blast gates. Lieutenant Chen, take your fireteam and reinforce him. I want overlapping thermal and kinetic coverage facing the loading bay entrance. If anything breaches that outer seal, I want it turned to ash before it touches the concrete."

Song Yan grunted affirmatively, adjusting his heavy tactical gear with a nod, while Lieutenant Chen stepped forward, his hands already beginning to radiate a faint, shimmering wave of high-intensity heat as his thermal powers primed for combat.

"Lu Feng," Han Zheng continued seamlessly, pivoting toward the side corridor leading downward into the dark lower foundations of the base. "Take your squad down to Sub-Level 4 immediately. Secure the drainage junctions. If the horde tries to tunnel, breach, or push through the sub-level pipes, plug the leak without hesitation."

"Understood, Commander," Lu Feng saluted crisply, motioning for Zhao Lei and Guo Jian, who had just arrived, to move out with their gear clanking rhythmically against their armor.

"What about the rest of the facility and the civilian refugees?" Lin Qing asked, stepping closely by his side to ensure every angle and blind spot was thoroughly accounted for.

"Depot guards are patrolling the civilian sector and secondary hallways. Dr. Zhou is stationed near the medical bay to handle triage and emergency supplies," Han Zheng replied smoothly. He gestured toward the upper observation stairs leading into the mezzanine. "Old Wang and the optics team are already set up on the upper view ramparts. That’s where we’re going next to oversee the exterior field."

Lin Qing gave a sharp, definitive nod, fully supporting his commanding presence. "Lead the way."

Moments later, Lin Qing and Han Zheng ascended the stairs leading to the upper view ramparts overlooking the exterior. Old Wang was already hunched over a heavy, tripod-mounted long-range optical scope, his face tight with intense concentration.

Lin Qing and Han Zheng stepped up to the metal railing, peering out through the heavy structural framing into the cold, thawing mountain landscape.

The immediate terrain was a desolate, freezing expanse of melting snow, gray mud, and slush.

Because of the natural depression of the valley and the sloping topography of rumpled bedrock, the main body of the surrounding zombie horde was still masked by the outer ridges and wasn’t fully visible to the naked eye yet.

However, right out in the open slush field, roughly seventy meters from the heavy blast gates, a solitary figure stood completely motionless. Even from this distance and through the dreary gray mist, they could faintly make out the back of a slim silhouette.

For a long, breathless moment, nobody spoke. The howling wind and the distant, low groans of the approaching swarm were the only sounds filling the air.

Old Wang adjusted the focus knob on his heavy scope, muttering something under his breath as the lens ground against its metal housing. He squinted hard through the rubber eyepiece, his fingers tapping nervously against the cold frame.

"Commander," Old Wang called out, his voice dropping an octave as his eyes widened slightly at what he was tracking further out on the ridgeline. "I just spotted more."

Deep within the secondary residential suite, the door hissed shut, sealing automatically under Guo Jiong’s manual override. The interior lights were locked in a steady, secure glow, and the reinforced shutters over the structural viewports were firmly bolted down.

Xiao Li let out a long breath, dropping his belt onto a nearby chair and shaking out his shoulders. "Alright, everyone. Stay close to the central core. We’re safe here, but we’re staying put until the Commander gives the all-clear."

Su Xiao sat quietly on the edge of her cot, hugging her knees to her chest, her dark eyes staring silently at the floor as she thought about her mother waiting outside the doors.

Xiao Mei sat beside her, offering a quiet, comforting pat on her shoulder.

In the corner of the room, away from the rest of the group, Han Ye did not sit on a bed. He walked over to the edge of the floor near the base of a structural support column and crossed his legs, sitting straight and rigid.

Gu An watched him closely, her eyes narrowing with a mixture of curiosity and caution. She had seen Han Ye do strange things before, but tonight, the atmosphere in the room felt heavy with impending violence.

Without a word, Han Ye closed his eyes.

His breathing slowed down immediately, matching a deep, unnatural cadence. Across the floor around him, the shadows stretching from the metal furniture and the wall seams suddenly darkened, losing their soft edges and turning into sharp, inky pools.

Han Ye was pushing his psychic capacity further than he had ever attempted before. He wasn’t just monitoring the immediate room or corridor; he was expanding his perception outward, weaving his consciousness into the very darkness of the base and further.

The shadows became his eyes and his ears. Through the thin seams of the ceiling panels, along the wiring conduits, down through the service shafts, and across the vast concrete expanses of all the levels, his awareness slipped like cold mist.

In his mind’s eye, the entire Research Center suddenly lit up in a stark, monochromatic map of ink and negative space. He could feel the heavy vibrations of Song Yan’s boots pacing near the main blast gates. He could sense the crackle of Lieutenant Chen’s thermal energy priming in the lower corridor.

Deeper still, down in the drainage pipes of Sub-Level 4, he could feel the cold, damp stone walls vibrating with the frantic, scurrying weight of dozens of crawling infected testing the perimeter seals.

Gu An stood up quietly from her bed and walked a few steps closer, stopping a few feet away from where the five-year-old boy sat with his eyes closed. As she watched him, she noticed the faint, dark vapor curling lazily around his fingertips, reacting to the intense focus of his mind.

A cold shiver ran down Gu An’s spine. Even though she possessed her own defensive shield powers and had survived the harsh early days of the apocalypse, looking at Han Ye right now filled her with an overwhelming sense of awe and unease.

He was only five years old, yet the sheer scale of the spatial awareness he was projecting across the entire facility felt impossibly vast—like an ancient, watchful entity wrapped in the body of a child.

’He isn’t just normal’, Gu An thought to herself, her throat tightening slightly as she stared at his calm, pale face. ’He’s controlling the dark. How can someone so young be this terrifyingly powerful?’

Han Ye didn’t open his eyes, his consciousness completely lost in the sprawling network of shadows, tracking every movement, every heartbeat, and every incoming threat closing in on the base from the dark world outside.
