Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 216: Revelation and the Swarm
The blast gates remained locked tight against the cold, damp mountain air, standing as a massive monolith between the safety of the subterranean Research Center and the encroaching horrors of the apocalyptic wasteland outside.
Yet, despite the impenetrable barrier sealing the primary loading bay, the observation platform directly above was a scene of intense, high-stakes focus. Lin Qing and Han Zheng stood shoulder-to-shoulder at the railing of the upper view ramparts. Their eyes were fixed firmly through the heavy, tripod-mounted optical equipment, staring out into the thawing, dreary slush field where the solitary silhouette of Su Xiao’s mother stood perfectly motionless against the biting wind.
Down below, far from the freezing exposure of the surface, the Central Command Hub was a hive of frantic, tightly controlled chaos. The vast room was bathed in the harsh, rhythmic glow of red emergency strobes and the cool, sterile blue light radiating from dozens of active monitors.
Dr. Zhou stood immediately beside Sun Hao’s primary communications and telemetry console, her brow furrowed in deep concentration. Her glasses reflected the rapid streams of data cascading down the screens as her hands moved smoothly over the interface controls.
Her eyes darted relentlessly across the flickering diagnostic displays and complex energy-tracking readouts. The base’s highly sophisticated sensor grid, calibrated to handle the extreme energy anomalies, was pulling raw, live telemetry directly from the outer perimeter sensors and satellite.
It was tracking the massive thermal, kinetic, and bio-frequency spikes erupting from the entity standing just seventy meters outside their primary doors.
"Commander Han, Lin Qing, do you read me?" Dr. Zhou’s voice crackled clearly through the comms channel. Even filtered through the static of the comms loop, her tone was laced with a sharp, undeniable edge of professional urgency. "We are pulling the live diagnostic feeds from the outer perimeter diagnostic arrays right now. I am isolating the specific energy signature coming off the subject standing outside the blast gates... and her internal baseline is shifting. Rapidly. We are recording a massive, unprecedented surge in her core frequency."
Up on the ramparts, Lin Qing did not pull her gaze away from the field. She reached out with a gloved hand and adjusted the fine-focus knob on her mounted optical scope, her dark eyes narrowing as the high-magnification lenses zoomed in on the slender, unmoving figure standing knee-deep in the gray slush.
"Specify the surge, Dr. Zhou," Lin Qing commanded, her voice calm and steady over the channel. "What exactly are you seeing on those monitors?"
"It is not just a high-tier mutated signature anymore," Dr. Zhou reported, her voice tightening with a mixture of scientific awe and underlying gravity as she stared at the rising frequency curves overlapping on her main console display. "The core resonance graph is spiking exponentially. It is completely off the charts for standard or even elite infected variants. I am running a direct telemetry comparison against the data we logged from the blue core Alpha over the northern ridge... Commander, her frequency matches the precise, unique energy range of the Alpha."
Dr. Zhou paused for a brief second, letting the sheer weight of the data settle across the comms network before delivering the final verdict. "She has evolved. She possesses a full Blue Core."
The realization hung incredibly heavy in the cold, biting air of the upper ramparts. The howling wind outside seemed to fade into a dull roar as the magnitude of the revelation washed over the leadership. Han Zheng’s expression darkened, his jaw setting into a hard, rigid line as his mind rapidly absorbed and processed the data.
Su Xiao’s mother was not just a high-tier anomaly who had managed to retain some fragment of her human consciousness. She was a fully evolved Blue Core entity. She wielded the exact same tier of power as the blue core alpha currently leading the siege against them. And yet, instead of leading a wave of infected to breach their walls, this formidable entity was standing entirely alone in the freezing mud, acting as a solitary, silent shield to protect the base—and her daughter—from the incoming storm.
Far below the surface, deep within the secure, lockdown confines of the secondary residential suite, the door remained locked tight under a strict manual override. The interior was eerily quiet, the silence broken only by the low, steady hum of the environmental life-support systems pumping filtered air into the room.
Xiao Li stayed near the center of the living area, his broad shoulders relaxed but his posture alert, keeping a watchful eye on Su Xiao and Xiao Mei.
Su Xiao sat quietly on the edge of her cot, her small hands clasped in her lap, staring silently at the floor as she thought about her mother waiting outside the doors.
In the far, dim corner of the suite, completely separated from the rest of the room, Han Ye sat cross-legged on the cold, polished concrete floor near the base of a heavy structural support column. His small hands were resting gently on his knees, his eyes were tightly closed, and his breathing was incredibly slow, measured in long, unnatural cadences that barely caused his chest to rise and fall.
Suddenly, a sharp, cold tremor vibrated violently through his sprawling shadow network.
Deep down in the depths of Sub-Level 4, near the massive drainage junctions where Captain Lu Feng’s squad was stationed, the darkness was physically disturbed.
Through his shadow link, Han Ye could "see" the intrusion clearly. A dense, concentrated cluster of swift, incredibly agile crawlers—mutated infected with twisted, elongated limbs and blind, snapping jaws—was quietly forcing their way past the rusted, heavy security grates of the outer drainage pipes.
The blue core Alpha was cunning. It was using the massive, overwhelming threat of the primary horde on the surface as a deafening distraction, attempting to slip these specialized infiltration units through the structural vulnerabilities of the base to exploit the chaos and attack the defenders from within.
Han Ye did not flinch, nor did he break his deep trance.
Sitting perfectly still in the quiet residential suite, a bead of cold sweat rolled slowly down his pale temple as he channeled the absolute peak of his shadow manipulation powers directly through the damp concrete walls and down into the lowest levels of the facility.
In the pitch-black, flooded drainage, the thick, inky pools of darkness clinging to the damp stone walls and the rusted pipes suddenly twisted, churning violently. The shadows surged upward like living, venomous tendrils, detaching themselves from the architecture to become solid, physical manifestations of pure, crushing force.
Before the leading crawlers could even fully squeeze their deformed, mutated bodies through the rusted iron bars, the sharp, rigid shadows wrapped violently around their elongated necks, their torsos, and their scuttling limbs. The infected thrashed blindly, their claws scraping desperately against the stone, but they could not fight an enemy made of darkness.
With ruthless, silent precision, Han Ye mentally clenched his fists. Far below, the shadow tendrils tightened like steel garrotes. Spines snapped with sickening cracks, throats were crushed to pulp, and skulls imploded under the sheer atmospheric pressure of the solidified darkness.
Han Ye systematically and silently obliterated as many of the incoming crawlers as he possibly could, turning the flooded pipes into a graveyard and relieving the immense pressure on Lu Feng’s lower defense team before the seasoned soldiers were even fully engaged.
Back up on the freezing, wind-swept heights of the upper view ramparts, the time for passive observation was rapidly running out. The battle was no longer an approaching threat; it was an imminent collision.
"Commander!" Sun Hao’s voice suddenly burst through the secure comms channel from the Command Hub, entirely stripping away his composure. His voice cut sharply through the heavy background static of wailing proximity alerts and blaring system sirens. "Long-range telemetry is showing an exponential, catastrophic spike! Massive, uncountable numbers of infected are flooding out of every single sector across the valley! They have broken the tree line, they are swarming over the ridges, and they are closing the distance to our outer perimeter at an unprecedented speed!"
"Old Wang, prime the thermal capacitors," Lin Qing instructed, her voice calm, icy, and devoid of hesitation as her hands moved with practiced, lethal efficiency. She smoothly unslapped the heavy safety catch of her high-penetration orange-core rifle, checking the glowing digital readout on the side of the receiver.
Han Zheng stood beside her, his shoulders squared against the wind as he checked the glowing energy capacitor on his heavy assault weapon. He ensured the volatile orange core was fully primed, seated correctly within the firing chamber, and perfectly synced to his own kinetic output capabilities.
The heavy weapon hummed with a deep, vibrating resonance, radiating a faint warmth that pushed back the mountain chill.
Old Wang stepped up right beside them, his hands gripping the cold frame of his specialized sniper variant. With a practiced, metallic, and deeply satisfying snap, he racked the heavy bolt backward, loading a high-density, energy-infused round directly into the chamber.
Operating on pure, synchronized military instinct, all three fighters raised their heavy weapons in unison. They pressed their eyes firmly against the soft rubber cups of the high-magnification optical scopes mounted atop their orange-core rifles.
They swept their crosshairs past the solitary, unmoving figure of the Blue Core mother standing bravely in the slush, and scanned the distant, snow-capped ridgelines and the thawing, muddy slopes where the massive wave of the horde was violently pouring downward toward the base.
Through the crystal-clear lenses of the advanced scopes, augmented by the base’s thermal imaging uplinks, they braced themselves for an absolute bloodbath. They fully expected to see a unified, mindless, and terrifying wall of rotting flesh charging straight for the blast gates.
Instead, what they saw unfolding on the thawing mountain slopes made all three freeze in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.
The massive, sprawling horde of infected flooding the valley was not advancing in unison toward the base.
As the thousands of mutated creatures converged from the ridges and the forests, rushing toward the center of the slush field, the absolute order of the swarm completely shattered. Rather than rushing the gates, the infected were violently, aggressively turning on one another.
Through her scope, Lin Qing watched in morbid fascination as high-speed crawlers launched themselves not at the base, but onto the backs of larger, heavily mutated brutes, tearing chunks of gray flesh from their necks. Infected were screaming, clawing, and ripping each other apart in a chaotic, bloody, and entirely mindless frenzy.
Limbs were severed, dark blood sprayed violently across the pristine white and gray slush, and the deafening chorus of their shrieks echoed terribly through the valley. It was a complete breakdown of the swarm’s attack structure—a sudden, brutal, and utterly bizarre civil war breaking out among the infected, stopping their relentless charge dead in its tracks.
Old Wang slowly lowered his heavy sniper rifle, pulling his eye away from the scope. He blinked rapidly, his face contorted in utter confusion as he stared out into the chaotic, bloody battlefield with his naked eyes.
Beside him, Lin Qing and Han Zheng remained perfectly still, their weapons still raised, but they exchanged a grim, deeply unsettled look, their eyes locked as they tried to comprehend the bizarre scene unfolding before them.
