Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 256: Silent Override
The transition from the icy, roaring darkness of the drainage pipe to the climate-controlled sterility of Tier Three was stark. Warm air smelling faintly of ozone, industrial floor wax, and electrical transformers washed down the vertical maintenance shaft as the squad hauled themselves up one by one.
Ye Lin was the first to clear the lip of the circular opening, rolling smoothly onto the floor of the service corridor. He dropped into a low crouch, his rifle raised to cover the hallway ahead. Han Zheng followed, his shoulders pushing through the steel frame, with Lin Qing, Su Yun, and Ah Hua close behind.
Ah Hua reached back into the shaft, pulling the
hatch shut with a barely audible click. Ye Lin re-engaged the digital deadbolts using his wrist-pad, locking the entry point behind them.
"Sub-corridor clean," Ye Lin whispered. He checked the real-time guard schedule running along the edge of his wrist-pad display. "Primary security sweep passed through this sector six minutes ago. We have a nineteen-minute window before the next automated sweep."
Lin Qing pressed her back against the wall, her eyes scanning the high ceiling where thick conduits and fiber-optic bundles snaked along the steel rafters. "Su Yun, optical coverage?"
Su Yun stepped forward, her visor reflecting the amber glow of the recessed strip lighting overhead. She pointed to a structural beam fifteen meters down the corridor. "The overhead optical lenses in this maintenance wing operate on a fifteen-degree rotational sweep. There’s a blind spot along the lower left wall beneath the cable conduit. Follow my pacing exactly."
With Su Yun leading them through the blind spots she knew from her months of labor, the squad moved like shadows.
Their steps were deliberate, their boots making little sound against the epoxy floor. They traversed three intersecting service halls without triggering a single motion grid or optical sensor, moving deeper toward the heart of Tier Three.
As they reached the doors marking the entry to the primary laboratory ring, the lighting shifted from warm amber to a harsh white. The hum of industrial machinery grew louder, accompanied by the low-frequency vibration of high-density energy conduits.
Han Zheng held up a hand, signaling a stop just short of the glass observation window beside the doors.
Lin Qing crouched beneath the frame, slowly raising a thin optical periscope over the sill to inspect the security post inside. Through the polarized lens, she saw a heavily secured junction bay. Two guards clad in dark tactical armor stood behind a bulletproof glass partition, monitoring a bank of diagnostic screens and security feeds. They wore standard sidearms and carried short-barreled carbines, but their relaxed postures indicated they had no idea an enemy strike team was standing five feet from their door.
"Two sentries," Lin Qing reported in a low whisper, turning back to Han Zheng. "They have direct line-of-sight to the manual override lever for the containment hall airlock. If either of them hits the physical alarm button on the console, it will trigger a base-wide lockdown."
"Synchronized strike," Han Zheng replied without hesitation. He brought his rifle up, checking that his selector switch was set to red. The weapon let out a low hum as its internal capacitors primed a red charge. "Lin Qing, take the guard on the left screen. I have the right. Ah Hua, stand by to breach the door the second they drop."
"On it," Ah Hua murmured, his arm flexing as hydraulic pressure built behind his knuckles.
Lin Qing aligned her optical sight through the small maintenance glass cutout in the frame, locking her reticle on the left guard’s neck joint where the armored neck-guard met the helmet liner. Beside her, Han Zheng aimed at the second guard’s chest plate.
"Three... two... one... execute," Han Zheng whispered.
PFT-THUM! PFT-THUM!
Two suppressed discharges erupted simultaneously from their barrels. The custom suppressors absorbed nearly ninety percent of the acoustic report, reducing the shots to soft, metallic thuds.
The two ruby-red bolts streaked through the sight glass, punching clean through the reinforced partition without shattering it. The first bolt burned through the left guard’s neck seal, severing his central nervous system instantly. The second struck the right guard’s chest plate, superheating the armor and knocking the wind from his lungs as he collapsed backward onto the floor consoles.
Neither guard had time to utter a sound, let alone reach for the glowing red alarm bar on the main panel.
Ah Hua stepped forward, driving his palm against the magnetic door latch. With a controlled exertion of hydraulic force, he sheared the internal locking pins and slid the doors open just wide enough for the squad to slip into the guard post.
Ye Lin immediately dragged the fallen guards behind the console desk, out of sight, while Su Yun plugged a bypass dongle into the security terminal to keep their telemetry feeds showing normal green heart rates on the base’s central network.
"Guard post neutralized," Ye Lin confirmed, wiping a bead of sweat from his temple. "Airlock controls are clear."
Han Zheng stepped past the console and pulled the manual release handle for the inner airlock doors. With a deep hiss of depressurization, the doors split down the middle, sliding back into the concrete walls to reveal the shadowy expanse of Tier Three’s primary containment hall.
The squad stepped through the threshold, falling silent as they took in the scale of the facility.
The containment hall was cavernous, stretching at least sixty meters beneath a vaulted ceiling made of dark granite bedrock and reinforced steel girders. The room was bathed in an eerie, pale blue glow cast by two long rows of towering cylindrical stasis pods mounted into the floor.
Arranged along the central catwalk were twenty-four massive glass pods filled with pale blue nutritive fluid. Suspended inside each pod was a human figure—men and women of varying ages, clad in thin white containment suits. Thick, glowing conduits were attached to the backs of their necks and spines, pulsing with an unnatural rhythm as they continuously extracted core energy from the helpless prisoners. The energy was channeled into a massive overhead collection manifold that hummed like a living beast.
"Look at them..." Ah Hua muttered, anger and disgust thick in his voice as he stared up at the nearest pod. "They’re using them like living batteries."
"They’re completely sedated," Su Yun whispered, stepping closer to one of the glass cylinders. She recognized the pale, emaciated face of a young woman floating inside—a former vanguard scout who had been captured during the outer perimeter skirmishes. "The core extraction is draining their lifespans. If they stay in these pods for another month, their core fragments will permanently collapse."
"Not today," Han Zheng said, his eyes burning with determination. "Ye Lin, get to the main console. Initiate the emergency purge sequence."
Ye Lin sprinted down the central catwalk toward the primary diagnostic terminal on an elevated platform overlooking the rows of stasis pods. He pulled the master interface cable from his wrist-pad and plugged it into the console’s primary data port.
"Accessing containment sub-net," Ye Lin reported, his fingers flying across the glass screen. "Sun Hao’s master override key is bypassing the regional safety locks. Neutralizing the sedative drip in three... two... one... Done."
A mechanical hum echoed through the hall as the conduits attached to the prisoners’ spines began to power down. Inside the twenty-four pods, the pale blue fluid began draining through valves at the bottom, and the glass surfaces started to frost over as the thermal stasis fields disengaged.
On the diagnostic monitors, twenty-four flatlining brainwave graphs began to spike with renewed neural activity. Several of the imprisoned power-holders stirred, their fingers twitching against the glass as core power started flowing back into their bodies.
"It’s working," Lin Qing said, her eyes scanning the catwalks above for movement. "The sedative is clearing their systems. In two minutes, they’ll have enough strength to break the pod glass from the inside."
"Once they’re out, we give them the spare weapons and direct them toward the upper elevator shafts," Ye Lin said, a rare grin touching his face as the release progress bar reached sixty percent. "The moment they hit Tier Two, Commander Lu’s guard lines will be completely overwhelmed."
Han Zheng stood near the base of the terminal platform, his rifle ready as he watched the main entrance. "Keep monitoring the override, Ye Lin. We don’t move until all twenty-four cells are fully unlatched."
"Progress at seventy percent..." Ye Lin called out, tracking the data streams. "Seventy-five... eighty..."
Suddenly, the central console’s screen flickered violently.
The calm blue interface vanished, replaced by a flashing grid of crimson warning signs. A piercing electronic chime began pulsing through the terminal speakers—not a base-wide siren, but a localized, high-security lockout tone.
WARNING: EXTERNAL OVERRIDE DETECTED IN SUB-LEVEL THREE.
PRIMARY CONTAINMENT MANIFOLD LOCKED BY MASTER COMMAND.
"What happened?!" Ah Hua barked, spinning toward the console. "Did the override trigger a local tripwire?"
"No! It wasn’t a tripwire!" Ye Lin shouted, his fingers hammering against the glass screen as the release progress bar froze at eighty-two percent. "The command link was severed from above! Someone with master-level clearance just executed a hard manual override from Tier Two!"
Before anyone could react, the steel airlock doors behind them slammed shut with a thunderous CRASH, the deadbolts firing into place with sickening finality. The pale blue lights illuminating the containment hall cut out, plunging the chamber into near-total darkness. Only the harsh, pulsing red emergency strobes along the upper walls remained.
A synthesized chime echoed over the room’s internal comms speakers, followed by a cold voice that resonated off the granite bedrock.
"Unauthorized access detected in Tier Three stasis bay. Initiating bio-containment seal. Local guard collars activated."
"Agh!"
Su Yun dropped to her knees on the steel catwalk, her rifle clattering against the metal grates. She gripped her head with both hands, a sharp scream tearing from her throat as her body trembled violently.
"Su Yun!" Lin Qing cried out, dropping beside her and pulling her into her arms. "What is it?! What’s happening?!"
"The... the chip..." Su Yun gasped through clenched teeth, her eyes wide with terror as a faint, high-pitched mechanical whine began vibrating behind her left ear. "Commander Lu... he knows we’re inside... He just activated the short-range command pulse!"
High above them, along the upper catwalks overlooking the containment hall, doors slammed open.
Eight heavily armored Apex "Hounds" stepped out from the shadows.
In the span of five seconds, their stealth infiltration had fallen apart. The squad was trapped inside a sealed subterranean vault, surrounded by mind-controlled power-holders, while their teammate collapsed under a direct neural attack from the tier above.
