The dry, metallic click-clack of charging handles and safety catches echoed crisply through the stark fluorescent lighting of the lower armory.

Heavy weapon racks lined the concrete walls, but today, standard lead-ballistics rifles remained left behind. Instead, the squad stood around the central steel workbench, fitting dark matte carbon-fiber plating and high-grade thermal insulation over their tactical combat suits.

Han Zheng pulled the main zipper of his suit tight against his throat, cinching down the leather straps of his utility harness. Beside him, Ah Hua was adjusting the wrist seal on his prosthetic arm, testing the rubber gasket to ensure the micro-servos remained fully watertight against freezing subterranean runoff.

Lin Qing snapped a sleek, black cylindrical suppressor onto the threaded barrel of her upgraded Power Core Rifle. The custom suppressor had been engineered by Dr. Zhou specifically to dampen the high-frequency crackle of red core discharges, allowing for near-silent precision engagement.

Sun Hao rushed into the armory, his face pale from lack of sleep but his eyes wide with triumphant energy. He held a stack of sleek wrist-pads, handing one to each member of the primary strike team—Han Zheng, Lin Qing, Ye Lin, Ah Hua, Song Yan and Su Yun.

"The server array completed the full decryption protocol twenty minutes ago," Sun Hao announced crisply. "Ye Lin’s data drive opened up completely. We have absolute visibility over Apexs entire operational layout."

The squad gathered tightly around as Sun Hao highlighted glowing gold data tracks.

"First, the guard shifts," Sun Hao explained, zooming in on the surface ridge. "Commander Lu maintains a rigid forty-five-minute rotation cycle for his perimeter searchlights and automated rail-turrets. There is a blind spot behind the western granite bluff during the relief change at zero-two-hundred hours."

"What about the powered guards?" Ye Lin asked, leaning over the display, his eyes sharp.

"Fully mapped," Sun Hao replied, bringing up a complex network of pulsing red nodes moving across the outer forest ring. "The drive contained the exact radio-frequency telemetry feed used by their central transmitter. The hounds patrol in packs of four along the lower tree line, but their internal transponders broadcast a constant locator ping. Your wrist-pads will vibrate whenever anyone comes within one hundred meters of your position."

Sun Hao tapped the bottom layer of the model, illuminating the deepest subterranean sector in a soft amber glow. "Most importantly, we confirmed Su Yun’s blueprints against their master architectural schematics. Tier Three’s containment lab is active. The files list twenty-four high-value power-holders currently held in stasis cells under continuous core-extraction. Commander Lu’s command suite is located directly above in Tier Two, and Dr. Sterling’s personal research office sits at the eastern end of Tier Three."

Han Zheng adjusted the strap of his wrist-pad, watching the real-time guard timers count down in crisp green digits across the small screen.

"Lu Feng, Old Wang, Lieutenant Chen, Xiao Li and the rest will remain at the Research Center with Dr. Zhou," Han Zheng ordered, his deep voice carrying a cold, steady authority that set the tone for the entire room. "They will hold our perimeter, maintain long-range radio monitoring and act as backup if needed. The five of us—Lin Qing, Ye Lin, Ah Hua, Su Yun, and myself—are the infiltration unit. We go in silent, we breach Tier Three, and we release those prisoners to break their guard line from the inside."

Su Yun stood near the edge of the workbench, her fingers tightly checking the harness of her sniper rig. Though her face was pale, her expression was calm and determined. She met Han Zheng’s gaze and gave a single, firm nod.

"Load up," Han Zheng said quietly. "We move out."

An hour later, the heavy six-wheeled transport sat idling in the shadow of a dense pine forest two miles southwest of Apex’s primary mountain perimeter. The vehicle’s exterior lights were completely doused, its dark body blending seamlessly into the misty night.

Outside, the thaw had transformed the mountain landscape into a damp, ghostly expanse. Heavy, humid ground fog clung to the pine needles and rock faces, created by the warm breeze melting the last thick snowbanks along the ridges.

Water trickled down every stone surface, filling the night air with the continuous, soft rush of flowing mountain streams. There were no mutated creatures in sight but everyone kept a lookout just in case.

The side hatch of the transport slid open with a faint hydraulic hiss.

Han Zheng dropped down into the damp pine needles first, his boots sinking soundlessly into the soft, wet earth. Lin Qing followed right behind him, her rifle held low in a low-ready stance, her clear eyes scanning the grey mist.

Ye Lin, Ah Hua, and Su Yun stepped out into the night, quietly closing the heavy transport hatch behind them.

"Transport will hold position in this ravine until we signal for extraction," Ye Lin whispered, tapping his wrist-pad to confirm their satellite sync. "The fog is dense enough to obscure visual searchlights, but we need to stay below their thermal sensors."

"Stay in single file," Han Zheng commanded softly. "Follow my path."

The five figures glided through the misty pine forest like shadows, moving swiftly across the wet forest floor. The air smelled strongly of damp earth, melting ice, and crushed pine needles. Every hundred meters, Han Zheng paused behind a thick tree trunk, checking his wrist-pad display to monitor the real-time movements of Apex’s outer defense grid.

A soft, double-pulse vibration buzzed against Lin Qing’s left wrist.

She immediately raised her hand, signaling a halt. The squad dropped low into the wet brush, crouching behind a moss-covered granite boulder.

Ten meters ahead, through the swirling gray fog, four imposing human silhouettes walked silently across a muddy clearing in a tight tactical diamond formation.

They were "Apex Hounds"—coerced human power-holders completely stripped of their autonomy.

Clad in matte-black reinforced body armor, their faces were concealed behind polished steel visors, and thick, glowing red control collars were locked around their necks. Faint arcs of suppressed core energy crackled across their gauntlets, kept under tight restraint by the short-range signal receivers pulsing on their collars.

Thanks to Sun Hao’s decrypted telemetry feed, the squad watched the red tracking indicators move across their wrist-pad screens in real time. The powered guards paused in the clearing, their visor sensors sweeping the damp spring air, but the thick ground fog and downwind position kept the squad completely hidden.

After a tense ten seconds, the four power-holders turned north, continuing their forced patrol loop along the outer tree line.

"Patrol cleared," Lin Qing breathed softly, lowering her wrist. "Sun Hao’s tracker data is flawless."

"Let’s move before the next rotation cycle begins," Han Zheng said.

Rising from the brush, the squad pushed deeper into the misty woods, ascending the steep, slippery slope toward the base of the granite ridge.

As they neared the foot of the cliff face, the dense trees gave way to a sheer, towering wall of dark bedrock.

Built directly into the mountain base was a massive, reinforced concrete archway—a primary drainage outlet where hundreds of gallons of freezing, water-logged spring runoff spilled out from the subterranean levels of the facility, crashing into a rocky mountain creek below.

A heavy, rusted iron security grate blocked the mouth of the five-foot-wide drainage pipe, secured by thick steel locking bars designed to prevent wild animals or human infiltrators from entering the facility’s lower plumbing network.

Su Yun stepped up to the edge of the rushing creek, pointing her flashlight toward the iron grate. "This is it," she whispered, her voice echoing softly against the concrete arch. "This drainage line runs straight beneath Tier Three’s lower mechanical sub-floor. It bypasses the surface radar and garages entirely."

Ah Hua stepped forward, wading into the thigh-deep, ice-cold creek water without a flinch. He reached out, his prosthetic arm locking onto the heavy iron bars of the security grate.

"Hold the frame," Ah Hua muttered under his breath, his metallic knuckles tightening around the wet, rusted metal.

With a slow exertion of hydraulic power, Ah Hua pulled back. Micro-servos whined softly within his steel forearm as the dark metal plating absorbed the immense pressure. The thick, rusted iron bars groaned under the force, bending outward like soft clay, opening a wide, silent gap straight through the center of the security grate without triggering a single electronic alarm wire.

"After you, Commander," Ah Hua said with a proud, silent grin, gesturing toward the gap.

Han Zheng stepped through the bent iron bars first, crouching low as he entered the concrete drainage pipe.

The interior of the pipe was pitch black, cold, and echoing with the loud, hollow roar of rushing water. The spring thaw runoff churned around their legs, reaching waist-height as they pushed deeper into the mountain. The water was bone-chillingly cold, but their sealed, insulated suits kept their bodies dry and warm, while their studded combat boots gripped the slippery, algae-covered concrete floor.

Lin Qing, Ye Lin, Su Yun, and Ah Hua filed into the tunnel behind Han Zheng, switching their rifle-mounted lights to low-intensity beams. The dim red glow illuminated the curved, water-streaked walls of the pipe as it sloped gradually upward, winding deeper into the hollowed-out bedrock.

They walked in silence for nearly fifteen minutes, the air inside the pipe growing progressively warmer and drier as they left the mountain entrance behind. The thick concrete walls began to give way to heavy, industrial steel plates lined with high-voltage conduit cables and pressurized steam pipes.

"We’re passing directly under the Tier Three containment perimeter now," Su Yun whispered, checking the digital map layout on her wrist-pad. "Up ahead should be the vertical maintenance access shaft."

Fifty meters down the pipe, the water level dropped significantly, flowing out through lower floor grates. The drainage pipe terminated at a junction box, where a heavy, circular steel hatch was set directly into the ceiling above them. An iron ladder was bolted to the vertical wall, leading straight up toward the hatch.

Ye Lin climbed the ladder first, his eyes scanning the electronic lock keypad mounted alongside the hatch frame. The keypad was glowing with a harsh red security light, indicating an active lock circuit.

Ye Lin pulled a short interface cable from his wrist-pad, plugging it directly into the maintenance override port at the base of the keypad.

"Sun Hao loaded the master override bypass codes into our drives," Ye Lin murmured, his fingers tapping a sequence into his wrist-pad screen. "Executing bypass now."

For three tense seconds, the red security light flickered rapidly on the keypad. Then, with a soft, satisfying beep, the indicator shifted from harsh red to a steady, glowing emerald green.

CLACK-HISSS!

The heavy pneumatic deadbolts inside the steel hatch retracted with a faint, muffled hiss. Ye Lin reached up, slowly pushing the heavy circular hatch open just a few inches.

A warm, sterile stream of air rushed down into the dark pipe, carrying the faint, distinct smell of ozone, floor disinfectant, and humming electrical transformers. Through the narrow gap of the open hatch, a soft, amber illumination washed over Ye Lin’s face.

Ye Lin peered through the opening, his eyes scanning the space above.

"Maintenance sub-corridor is empty," Ye Lin reported back in a low whisper, turning his head down toward the squad. "No motion sensors active in this section. Guard rotation isn’t scheduled to pass through here for another twenty minutes."

Han Zheng rested his hand on the grip of his rifle, his eyes flashing with sharp, cold intensity as he looked up at the amber light spilling through the hatch.

They had successfully crossed the mountain pass, bypassed the surface turrets, avoided the controlled power-holder patrols, and infiltrated the absolute deepest subterranean level of Apex’s primary regional stronghold without raising a single alarm.

"Move up," Han Zheng ordered softly, his voice steady as steel. "Phase One begins now."
