Chapter 479: Chapter 479: Buy, Buy, Buy

’My wife is always saying at home, "Oh, it would be so great to have a refrigerator."’

’If I had a fridge, I’d go to the fruit store later, buy a huge bag of fruit, take it home, chill it, and eat it at my leisure.’

’I’d also grab some snacks from the night market, chill them at home, and heat them up whenever I get a craving.’

’Oh, and I should probably get a microwave, too.’ Heh heh. Logan Holland was getting a thrill from his own daydreams.

’Then again, with this weather, it’s not like I really need a fridge... but who cares? I want one anyway!’

The other three men’s eyes lit up as well. ’A refrigerator! I want one so badly!’

They didn’t really have anything to put in a fridge, but you have to splurge on an impulse buy every once in a while!

What if they had something later on!

Summer was so long. They could buy popsicles and ice cream in bulk from the convenience store! Wouldn’t that be awesome!

After looking at the refrigerators, Logan Holland and the others went to check the prices. They were a little pricey, but within an acceptable range.

Lily Hart pointed behind them. "You’re looking at the large refrigerators. We have smaller ones, too."

Different sizes naturally meant different prices. The men looked and were even more satisfied.

A large one would be useless to them. A small one was just right, and the price was perfect.

So, after a brief discussion, the four men—Logan Holland included—each decided to buy a small refrigerator.

Then came a problem. Logan Holland asked, "So... how do we carry them? It’s not like they’re snacks you can just hold in your hand..."

The men looked at each other, and their gazes all fell on Lily Hart. She remained perfectly composed.

"Pay for them first," Lily Hart said. "You’ll find out after you’ve paid."

Each section had self-service checkouts that could recognize item codes, barcodes, or QR codes.

Once the item was recognized, you could pay. Logan Holland followed the on-screen instructions step by step.

After fumbling through the payment process, a black wristband materialized on the checkout counter.

Logan Holland looked at Lily Hart, then at the black wristband. After she gave him an affirmative nod...

He picked up the black wristband. The next moment, the small refrigerator he had picked out vanished.

"Huh?" Logan Holland was puzzled, then a flash of insight struck him.

He immediately put the black wristband on. The next second, a translucent panel appeared before his eyes.

On the display, the small refrigerator sat quietly in a corner.

Logan Holland’s eyes lit up. "Is... is this a spatial storage?! For holding the items we buy?"

Lily Hart snapped her fingers. "You got it! That’s exactly right."

Everyone could see the translucent panel, but it was already bound to Logan Holland, so it couldn’t be stolen.

"Whoa!" Yael Lowell exclaimed for what felt like the hundredth time that day. ’This is incredible! Truly incredible!’

They’d even thought of this detail, and the execution was perfect. After all, appliances were huge; shopping carts weren’t a realistic solution.

Logan Holland continued, "So, the other things I buy... can they all be stored in this wristband, too?"

"Of course. Once you take all the items out, the wristband will be reclaimed," Lily Hart explained.

The men nodded repeatedly. The other customers around them learned something new as well; they had just been wondering about the same thing.

But it was actually written on the directory signs. Perhaps no one had bothered to read them.

Logan Holland, beaming, finished paying and moved to the side. Elder Shaw and the other two also paid in succession.

Each one was now the proud owner of a new refrigerator.

The group of five moved to the nearby air conditioner section, which was particularly crowded with customers.

This was probably an item you could use year-round. After all, the weather in the apocalypse was truly extreme.

You either froze to death or died of heatstroke. There was no such thing as a comfortable temperature!

The men took one look, decided these were also a necessity, and after each picking one out, they paid without hesitation.

Ever since the fall of The Mysterious Clan, Elder Shaw had raised everyone’s wages and benefits.

After a period of saving, their funds were quite substantial.

The next section was for rice cookers. The men looked, and once again, they felt the impulse.

Lily Hart figured that with their spending power and impulsiveness, they were bound to grab an item from every single section.

’Oh well,’ she thought. ’As long as they have the money.’

Peter Sharp was the voice of reason. "Even if we buy rice cookers, do we have any rice to cook with?"

Yael Lowell also regained a sliver of sanity. "Good point. We can probably hold off on this one."

Logan Holland said nothing. He just went ahead and paid. Only after paying did he ask, "Don’t they sell rice at the convenience store?"

Lily Hart regretfully informed him, "Not at the moment. It’s just a convenience store selling daily necessities and snacks. The grains and cereals department hasn’t been developed yet."

Logan Holland also sighed with regret. "Oh well. I bought it anyway, so we’ll figure it out!"

Lily Hart was speechless. ’As the boss, I can’t very well stop people from handing me money, can I?’

It was somewhat understandable for Logan Holland to buy one. After all, Cherie Lowell knew how to cook and would occasionally putter around in the kitchen.

But Elder Shaw had bought one, too. He was single and usually swamped with work. Where would he find the time to cook?

But as the boss, she couldn’t very well stop people from handing her money, could she?

As they walked from the rice cooker section to the next, Lily Hart fell into deep thought.

’There’s no fresh food market, is there? No place to sell vegetables, meat, or seafood.’

’How am I only just now thinking of this!’

’Sigh, this is a huge oversight. Otherwise, what’s the point of everyone buying these appliances? Just to let them gather dust?’

She immediately made a wish to the System. ’I want a fresh food market! I want a fresh food market! I want a fresh food market! I’m saying it three times because it’s important!’

’Come on, boss,’ the System replied. ’I’m just a small, helpless system, not a wishing well!’

’I don’t care! As long as my belief is strong enough, I’m sure someone will "scratch" one off!’

The System went silent. This was true; it had told Lily Hart this before.

As long as her belief was strong enough, there was nothing that couldn’t be "scratched" into existence.

The next section was for electric kettles. This was something everyone could use, so they all bought one.

At this point, Logan Holland had bought the most items. He hadn’t missed a single section.

But he didn’t feel a shred of regret. Every so often, he would pull up the translucent panel to take a peek, feeling a sense of security only when he saw the appliances stored inside.

He was already daydreaming about how happy his wife would be when he brought all these appliances home.

The group of five continued to browse and buy, and Lily Hart’s legs were starting to ache.

But the men were still full of energy and vigor, showing no signs of fatigue.

Lily Hart wanted to sigh at their youthful energy.

But then she remembered she was the youngest one here, and in the worst physical shape. ’Damn it.’

Elder Shaw marveled at the sheer variety of appliances available, all while paying for them without a moment’s hesitation.

The others felt the same way. They just couldn’t resist. They just had to have it all!

Only after Boss Hart appeared did they realize what a miserable life they had been living before!

Everyone was finally tired from shopping, so they found a place to rest. The five of them took up an entire bench.

They sat in a neat row.

Except for Lily Hart, the other men were all looking at their wristbands, admiring the appliances they had bought.

They couldn’t help but daydream about the wonderful life ahead, certain that things would get better, little by little.

Lily Hart was daydreaming too, hoping someone would "scratch" off a fresh food market soon!

That way, everyone could truly experience a taste of the simple life from before the world fell apart.

Wake up in the morning, go out to kill zombies as if it were a day job, and then come home, buy some meat and vegetables from the market, and cook a nice meal.
