Chapter 483: The Research Institute
Chapter 483: Chapter 483: The Research Institute
"You’re now connected to Frost Shaw’s brainwaves. Say what you need to, quickly. Every second you waste costs one thousand points."
Lily Hart immediately said, "Frost Shaw, they’re here, right behind you! You can’t see them, but your attacks should still work. If all else fails, use fire!"
Stan Sterling was a Fire Ability User, and plants were generally afraid of fire.
Frost Shaw was stunned for a moment but quickly complied, even though he didn’t understand what new ability this was.
But he knew it was Boss Hart’s voice, and only she possessed such an ability.
He suddenly barked in a low voice, "Stan Sterling, attack behind us! Use fire!"
Stan Sterling didn’t doubt him for a second. Frost Shaw was a higher rank, and his intuition and abilities were both superior.
Without even moving his body, he swiftly shot one fireball after another behind him, each larger than the last.
Everyone held their breath and watched, hoping the fireballs would blast some strange creature into view, yet also hoping that creature wouldn’t be too powerful.
The fireballs first shot forward at an incredible speed.
Then, as if hitting an obstacle, they stopped one by one in mid-air, unable to advance any further.
Immediately after, the fireballs vanished with a HISSING and SIZZLING sound.
’That’s the sound of fireballs being doused by water. But isn’t it a plant? Where would the water come from?’
Refusing to give up, Stan Sterling waved his hand, and a wall of fire half his height rushed forward, twisting into various shapes in the wind.
But the result was the same; the flames were even stopped and extinguished at a closer position than before.
Frost Shaw remembered what Lily Hart had said: they had arrived.
’It’s like a ghost, it can walk... How terrifying.’
He quickly calculated its movement speed and swiftly led his team into Central Command.
"To the wall! Spray the solution!" Frost Shaw ordered decisively.
The Guardian Corps immediately complied, shouldering high-pressure water guns and rushing up onto the wall.
These high-pressure water guns had been purchased from a hardware store; Elder Shaw had bought two hundred of them in one go.
They were especially convenient for spraying the "Plant-Killer" solution.
Just flip a switch and spray away.
A month ago, the Central Research Institute had also developed an artillery shell specifically designed to deal with mutated plants.
It could accelerate a mutated plant’s growth rate, causing it to die quickly.
Using the solution and the shells in tandem was even more effective.
At this moment, a row of superpower users lined the wall, alternating between those holding high-pressure water guns and those shouldering launchers.
Since they couldn’t see the enemy anyway, they just sprayed and fired blindly ahead!
This time, it had some effect; at least, everyone heard the sound of the plant wailing.
Frost Shaw found it truly bizarre. ’What kind of mutated plant is this? It can even turn invisible?’
But at least it wasn’t mute. When injured, it would cry out, scream, and roar.
Inside the RV, the sea of green before Lily Hart’s eyes vanished again. Each time it appeared, it was only for a brief second.
’I wonder how Frost Shaw and the others are doing. Can they handle it?’
She anxiously peered toward Central Command and saw a line of people standing on the wall.
They were shouldering some kind of equipment and spraying a green liquid outward. Both the range and the water volume were impressive.
It just looked like they were spraying blindly.
Lily Hart knew they couldn’t see it; only she could.
So they could only rely on instinct and spray forward, hoping the general direction was correct.
The situation was just too nerve-wracking!
Her vision flickered, and the dense vines appeared once more.
But this time, they weren’t outside the wall—they had already slipped into Central Command unnoticed!
The system chimed in at the perfect moment: "Connect to Frost Shaw’s brainwaves, Host?"
"No!" Lily Hart refused flatly. ’That was an emergency, but now I’ll just make a call!’
’One thousand points per second... I really can’t afford that.’
She took out her Light Brain and quickly made the call, which was answered almost instantly.
Frost Shaw’s calm voice came through. "Lily Hart?"
Lily Hart skipped the pleasantries. "Stop spraying! They’re already inside!"
"What?" Frost Shaw was taken aback. He could still clearly hear the plant’s faint wails.
He could even see fragments of branches that had fallen outside the base.
’I thought we’d successfully blocked it outside the base. Was that just a diversion?’
It had left a small part of itself behind to deal with their solution and shells, while the main body had slipped right inside.
’Damn.’
’Is this how a plant is supposed to think? It feels smarter than some humans!’
These thoughts flashed through his mind, and Frost Shaw quickly asked, "Can you still see where it is?"
Lily Hart blinked hard, but she couldn’t see it anymore.
She said with regret, "I can’t see it anymore. But the part inside the base was smaller than what I saw before. It’s probably an offshoot or something."
Frost Shaw understood and couldn’t help but feel a headache coming on. With it inside the base, finding it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
He quickly had Leo Colby call Elder Shaw, keeping his own Light Brain connected to Lily Hart.
The group quickly convened and synchronized all known information.
Elder Shaw said grimly, "This won’t do. There are too many civilians in Central Command. If it goes on a killing spree, the consequences will be unimaginable."
Everyone understood this. Ordinary people stood no chance against a mutated plant.
Lily Hart said, "How much of the solution do you have in reserve? I suggest spraying all the important areas."
Elder Shaw agreed and immediately began arranging for it to be done.
They had sprayed before, but only outside the base.
Lily Hart continued, "Or we could use the solution to locate it. Didn’t Frost Shaw say there’s a reaction when the solution makes contact with the plant?"
"Good idea," said Leo Colby.
Elder Shaw immediately made the arrangements. Fortunately, they had stockpiled a large amount a while back.
He had the Guardian Corps form five-man teams to carry the solution and spray it all over Central Command, hoping it would do some good.
It was somewhat useful, but what no one expected was that the plant went straight for the Research Institute.
The Research Institute had always been the most strictly guarded and heavily defended location.
Yet it had been breached with such ease. When Frost Shaw and the others arrived at the Research Institute, they saw the main gate was in ruins.
The once-magnificent gate was now a pile of rubble, and even the Research Institute’s iconic structure had been demolished.
It came crashing down.
Everyone couldn’t help but seethe with anger and indignation.
Elder Shaw took a few deep breaths to compose himself, then put one hand on his hip and cursed, "Damn it all!"
With a wave of his hand, he commanded, "Hurry inside! Rescue the researchers first! Try to move out the important equipment and instruments as well. If you really can’t... forget it. The people are what’s most important!"
At this moment, the people were the priority.
The researchers were the real foundation.
The Guardian Corps obeyed the order and fanned out to begin the search. Frost Shaw and his team went to help as well.
Not only did they have to search for and rescue the researchers, they also had to watch for any sign of the mutated plant, proceeding with extreme caution.
But it seemed the mutated plant had already left.
By the time Frost Shaw realized this, it was too late. He immediately notified Elder Shaw.
He warned him to watch the other important locations carefully and not let history repeat itself.
Elder Shaw had already considered this while the Guardian Corps and Frost Shaw’s team went in to conduct the search and rescue; he had already dispatched men to stand guard.
He could only hope they would hold.
