Chapter 19: New Mission

Outside of the door, the corridor was filled up with people.

They stretched all the way from where Alex was until the opposite end of it.

Some of them who weren’t able to squeeze into the corridor, stood at the staircase.

A few of them were still munching on the MRE ration pack they’ve gotten from the other Awakened like Eddy and Lin.

The only thing common among them was that they had a worried look on them, not knowing what to expect.

"I think that everyone should know by now that things aren’t the same anymore." Alex raised his voice and they stopped what they were doing to glance at him.

He walked out into the corridor and said, "And I believe that you’ve seen what is happening with the rats and other beasts.

"From what I’ve figured out, it would most likely be getting worse.

"The rats and birds have gotten larger and there were wolves from the woods that stood taller than us."

Eddy, Lin and the other Awakened who had helped with taking care of the birds while Brian piloted the drone earlier nodded their heads to what Alex had said.

The other students lowered their heads and thought about what it meant.

They were having troubles dealing with the rats earlier. What would happen to them if these mutated beasts would get even bigger and deadlier.

Scenes of how some of the students were ripped apart and eaten by the rats began going through their minds uncontrollably.

Alex saw their response and shook his head at them.

"I know that it might be difficult for you to accept what’s happening but it is what it is now.

"And there is not much time left for us.

"To stay safe, we need to work together."

"But how? We don’t have arms or special abilities like Eddy or Lin and their friends." One of the students asked with a frown.

The other students nodded their heads.

Alex shook his head at them and said, "I don’t think that you have much of a choice.

"Either we work together or you shall perish."

All of the students nodded their heads and gave out a sigh.

They knew that he was right.

"I will need you to organize among yourselves to be on different details to guard the entrances of the dorm building, and have patrol teams to go around making sure that it is safe in here."

Alex said and he glanced over at Eddy and Lin, "Both of you make sure that there is at least one Awakened in each team to make it safer for them."

Eddy and Lin nodded their heads at him.

The other students glanced at each other and chattered among themselves, unsure of whether they could do it.

Alex saw their apprehension and he decided to give them the incentive.

He glanced at the other students and said, "Only those who participate in the patrol and security details would have a share of the food and water we get from outside."

It would entice them to contribute and let them know that they will have to learn to fend for themselves if they wanted to survive.

Alex wouldn’t expect the guys who have Awakened, like Eddy and Lin, to take care of the other students willingly for too long.

They aren’t saints and giving out what they’ve risked with their lives forever would be absurd.

It was best to let the other students contribute in any way they could.

The other students grumbled for a bit until reality sank in for them.

Alex’s proposition was something they had to accept.

Given the choice to go out and fight with these monsters or stay in the dorm building and try to keep everyone safe, it was an obvious choice to go for the latter.

"I will do it." One of the students said to Alex and the others followed suit.

Soon, all of the students in the corridor agreed to what Alex had proposed.

Eddy, Lin and his friends began to form themselves into different teams with the other students and they began to decide the timing for the different details for the patrols.

Once they were done, the other students dispersed from the corridor to get back to their rooms to get ready.

When everyone was gone except for Eddy and Lin, Alex glanced over at them and said, "Come with me."

He turned around and Eddy and Lin followed him into Brian’s room.

Once they got inside the room and closed the door, Alex glanced at them and said, "Alright, I would need your help again tomorrow.

"But this time, I can offer you something different."

"Something different like?" Lin asked with curiosity.

Eddy was also eager to know and he glanced at Alex, waiting for him to speak.

"I can offer you information this time." Alex began to brief them on how to become stronger by killing more of the mutated beasts.

Brian, Terry and Riley who were also in the room nodded their heads to it, giving more confirmation that it was indeed the case.

"No wonder..." Lin already had such a hunch before and Alex helped to confirm it for him.

Eddy too felt better now that he knew that he could become stronger.

The mutated beasts getting larger was starting to get him worried.

And with them knowing how it worked, Alex told them what was required from them.

"We will be going to the school of Bio-science tomorrow to help bring food supplies to them and fuel up their backup generator.

"Without electric power, their equipment wouldn’t work and we can’t get to know more about what is happening."

Lin lowered his head and frowned.

Eddy gave out a sigh.

The school of Bio-science wasn’t near and they would have to go two kilometers across the campus to get to it.

They were worried about dealing with more unknown mutated beasts, but at the same time, they knew that killing more of these mutated beasts would make them stronger.

"I will help but can we go to the cafeteria on the way to grab some meat and vegetables? No offense but the ration packs aren’t really tasty." Lin said with a shrug.

Eddy nodded his head to it vigorously.

"Fine, we will do so if we have the chance." Alex said and glanced over at the Business Building. Still wary of Joe who was looking at them earlier.
