Apocalypse: the Most Ruthless Person
Chapter 777 - 648: Don’t Panic, I’m Here
If it were a few days ago, zombies that hadn’t undergone the third enhancement would be trapped by the harsh cold environment and terrible roads. But not anymore. These zombies can climb over obstacles, and no amount of hindrance can stop them. Their movements are clumsy, but they can climb!
"I can see forty to fifty, and that’s just a part of them, maybe even a small part!"
Shen Linrui put down the binoculars and turned to look at Zhao Dezhu and Lu Yubo, separated by a house.
"Didn’t we scout the area with drones before and didn’t find any zombies? How did a group suddenly appear..."
Standing guard is meant to keep an eye on approaching zombies or humans, but when zombies actually appear, Lu Yubo was a bit puzzled.
"This area was severely damaged by shockwaves, so the zombies were probably trapped in some building, and now they’re coming out because the houses collapsed!"
Shen Linrui explained.
"What’s there to analyze? Let’s hurry down to wake everyone up and prepare for battle!"
Zhao Dezhu was not in the mood to waste brain cells thinking, and, visibly anxious, jumped onto the staircase, splayed his legs, and slid down.
Lu Yubo gathered his things without saying a word and also jumped down after Zhao Dezhu.
"Captain Shen, we..."
Pu Chanyong looked a bit at a loss as he turned to Shen Linrui.
Even a minor reaction could show the difference in combat quality between the five from Dragon Head Camp and the Yama Corps.
Zhao Dezhu and Lu Yubo were both the brawn-over-brains type, but even they knew very well what to do in case of an encounter.
"What ’we’ ’they’? Hurry, move!"
Shen Linrui had already started packing when Zhao Dezhu jumped down the stairs.
In less than half a minute, Zhao Dezhu and Lu Yubo burst into the house.
"What happened?"
Duan Wuhu was the first to wake up, quickly standing up. He moved deftly, with neither his rifle nor his steel rod leaving his side. Knowing he hadn’t ventured out for a while and that his alertness might wane, he deliberately reinforced a psychological build-up to stay tense.
"There’s a horde of zombies, about two hundred meters away, coming from that direction, probably around a hundred of them. From the sound of it, there don’t seem to be any big ones; get ready to rumble!"
While checking his weapons and ammunition, Lu Yubo reported the situation.
By this point, everyone was awake. Upon hearing the news, the people from Dragon Head Camp felt a weight in their hearts. As a reconnaissance team, encountering a zombie horde was their biggest fear.
"Cooperation, win-win through cooperation; as long as we work together, we fear no difficulties. That’s what the divination says..."
Yuan Huotu rose with his weapon, muttering to himself, seemingly trying to muster up courage.
"What are you all panicking for..."
Wu Lue rubbed his eyes, leaning against the wall, smacking his dry mouth, and mumbled, "Did you forget about me, huh? What do you think I’m here for? A hundred zombies are nothing. Just watch me lead them away..."
"Right!"
Duan Wuhu, his expression relaxing a bit, nodded, "Let’s try to avoid conflict. Let Xiaowu use the drone to lure the zombies away."
Engaging zombies in the dark would be a huge disadvantage. If we can avoid combat, let’s do that.
"Damn, if Sister Cheng Xu were here, things would be even cooler, we’d just..."
"Ahem! Enough, Luezi, get to it!"
Zhao Dezhu started to show off but was immediately interrupted by Duan Wuhu.
"We can’t rely on brute force for everything, technology is definitely better than brute action. Let’s go, get our gear!"
Wu Lue noticed the two people from Dragon Head Camp looking at Zhao Dezhu with curious eyes, seemingly noticing something, so he quickly helped Duan Wuhu brush it off. After speaking, he exaggeratedly wrapped his coat around him and walked out. The drones and other equipment were all stored on the vehicle.
"What are you all... doing?"
Shen Linrui and Pu Chanyong returned, both with urgency on their faces. Seeing people walking out of the house not seeming to prepare for a zombie defense, they were a bit surprised.
"Xiaowu, get to it. Captain Shen, we’re planning to let Xiaowu use the drone to lure the zombie horde away. Less trouble is better than more trouble."
Duan Wuhu told Wu Lue not to delay and briefly explained the situation.
"Oh, that’s good, very good!"
Shen Linrui breathed a sigh of relief, turning on the flashlight to illuminate for Wu Lue.
The zombies were getting closer step by step, standing in the courtyard, you could already hear the sounds of feet stepping on rotten wood, shoving against obstructions, metal scraping against metal, mixed with faint zombie howls...
These sounds were like the footsteps of Death, stomping on the hearts of the nine individuals one by one.
Even for battle-hardened individuals like Zhao Dezhu and others, such an environment would still bring a considerable psychological strain. Zhao Dezhu exchanged a look with Lu Yubo, and both could see the thought in each other’s eyes.
They both had the image of Zhang Su appear in their minds. Whether it was before the battle, during the battle, or after, having someone who could stay calm and lead the whole situation made people feel extremely reassured. Now that he was suddenly gone, there was an emptiness inside.
This mindset was undoubtedly unacceptable. Since they were assigned the task, they should have the ability to handle it independently!
Wu Lue also heard those chaotic sounds, but he remained composed, not having as many thoughts as Zhao Dezhu and Lu Yubo. His way of participating in battles in the past was quite unique, mostly relying on himself with no one directing him.
Contrary to his usual jovial attitude, he moved swiftly, and upon being ready, a drone lifted off, carrying below it a net bag containing a phone set with a countdown timer.
With a gentle buzz, the drone slowly flew toward the direction of the oncoming zombie horde.
Everyone gathered around the display screen to watch. The drone’s camera had night vision capabilities, and under a clear shot, they could see zombies among the ruins, like a bunch of ants crawling over piles of stones.
There were about a little over a hundred, matching the previously detected information, and there were no big ones.
Everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief.
"Xiaowu, do you think you can handle it?"
Duan Wuhu, leading a mission for the first time, couldn’t help but feel nervous and said, "If you need our assistance with anything, just let us know."
Wu Lue shook off his drowsiness, his face full of seriousness, and nodded slightly, "Don’t worry, I’ve led away thousands of zombies before, these are just a small matter, just watch!"
As he spoke, he controlled the drone to fly over the center of the zombie horde, and in less than three seconds...
Cluck cluck!
A loud rooster crow pierced the silence of the night, overpowering the noise made by the zombies; it was deep and penetrating!
"Hear that? The big rooster crowed, haha, it can be heard even three or four kilometers away!"
Wu Lue was very excited, though he didn’t know that a few kilometers away, in a cave halfway up Cloud Dragon Valley, the impact wave had caused the cave entrance to collapse. A stone slab as large as half a human body was pushed aside, the heavy stone rolling half a turn on the ground and settling with a muffled sound.
The stone being pushed aside triggered a chain reaction, causing the rubble clogging the entrance to collapse with a rumble.
Howl, howl...
Amidst the rumble, from inside the cave came the unique sounds of a zombie, neither loud nor frantic, appearing somewhat weak instead.
When the dust settled, a Big Head poked out from the pile of stones. Normal humanoid heads are mostly round, or oval, with no overly exaggerated proportions, but this zombie hidden in the cave had a bizarre long head!
The entire skull seemed to be stretched vertically, appearing eerie and comical. Not only was the head elongated, but the eyes, ears, and nose on its face were also stretched, especially the vertically elongated eyes, making it extremely peculiar.
This long-headed zombie seemed very weak, lying on the stone pile listening and observing the situation outside, its gaze following the direction of the sound, its pupils hidden in the darkness spinning and contracting, as if discovering something of interest!
