And even if someone could put in some effort to make something for her son, would they be willing to put in the effort? So, as long as someone prepared something for her son with their whole heart, Bai Meiyue would be quite happy. She would remember this little elephant no matter what.

She took the wooden elephant and then walked out of the tent. When she entered the safe base, she went straight to her mansion and placed the wooden elephant next to her son.

Just as she finished putting the wooden toy next to her son, there was a knock behind her. She turned around and looked at one of the underlings of Xiao Wu, who had come to look for her.

"What is the matter?" Bai Meiyue asked.

"Someone from the Bai family came just now and brought a lot of things for your son. All of which are piled up in the yard."

When Bai Meiyue heard that someone from the Bai family had come to look for her, she could not help but frown. It was the end of the world, and no one would waste their time sending gifts to someone for no reason. Everyone was exhausted; some were busy surviving, some were fighting for their future, and they were always living in danger and risks. Surrounded by so many schemes, how could Bai Meiyue feel safe with someone from the Bai family coming to see her?

Especially when they had never met her.

However, they had already come looking for her, and she could not just turn them away. She followed the underling out of the mansion. She soon arrived at the safe base’s iron gates and turned to look at her brother. "Ask them to open the gates."

Bai Jixuan frowned and asked, "Are you sure about this?"

"They are already here. What is the point of ignoring them?" Bai Meiyue shrugged while holding her son. "Even if we ignore them, there is a good chance they will come looking for us again." She also wanted to see what the people from the Bai family wanted to do. Why would she come looking for you?

Seeing that his sister had made the decision, Bai Jixuan turned to look at the guards. The guards nodded and then pulled open the gates, and a second later, the iron gates that had been modified by Bai Zhai were opened, revealing a convoy unlike the ragged caravan that usually begged at the safe base.

Three sleek, armoured all-terrain vehicles rolled through the dust, their chassis pristine and free of the ash crust that coated the outer camp’s jalopies. Painted on the lead truck’s door was a crest that Bai Meiyue had seen only on the television. The crest had two silver ivy branches intertwined around a golden dragon.

The mark of the house of the Bai family from the capital—the estranged bloodline of her mother.

Bai Meiyue stood at the watchtower, her eyes staring at the convoy that was driving through the gates. She watched as the convoy came to a stop and the passengers started to disembark. A middle-aged woman in a fur-trimmed coat stepped out first, sniffing the air with an expression of open distaste, followed by a younger man who immediately looked around with wide, curious eyes.

"Unannounced guests have arrived, boss." Xiao Wu peeked down at the two women and frowned when he saw that the two of them were looking around their safe base. The young man was still alright; he looked more curious than disgusted, but when he thought about how the woman was looking around with disgust, he ended up pursing his lips in disgust.

"Well, they are indeed unannounced and... unwelcomed." Bai Meiyue curled her lips in distaste when she saw what was going on. She knew that the woman who came to look for her was actually none other than the woman who had taken the place of her mother. "It seems like Old Madam Bai thinks too little of me. She actually sent the fake daughter."

**

When Bai Meiyue descended to the courtyard, Bai Yi was already smoothing down her immaculate gloves, her eyes lingering with cold envy on the massive hydro-pneumatic atmospheric purifier humming and pulsing near the wellhead.

She was not Bai Meiyue’s biological aunt—she was the girl who was swapped at birth with Bai Meiyue’s mother. Of course, she would not be happy when she thought about how the one who should have been suppressed by her was living a good life. How could her daughter be a useless bum relying on her cousins while that country bumpkins’ children were all awakened users?

"Bai Meiyue," Bai Yi greeted, her tone dripping with practised, condescending affection. "It is getting harder and harder to meet with you. Surely, it seems like you have made yourself the little queen of your safe base." As she finished speaking, she let out a teeter-totting laugh.

"Madam Bai," Bai Meiyue replied coldly. Keeping her hands in her pockets, she looked at the woman who had taken her mother’s place; in her eyes, this woman was nothing special. Even when she lived in luxury, she did not have the elegance and gentleness of her mother. In fact, she did not even look half as good as her mother!

She tilted her head to one side and drawled, "You think so and yet I find it quite shocking that some people still find the time and audacity to look for me. Especially when I have made it quite clear that I don’t want to meet with them."

Bai Yi’s smile twitched, but she quickly recovered, snapping her fingers at the guards who came with her. "Well, unless they are family, I do understand your concerns, but family is family, dear. And we came to celebrate! Word has reached our safe base that you have given birth to a child in this broken world. My mother is quite —your grandmother—overjoyed by the news!"
