Apocalyptic Disasters: Carrying a bun and hoarding supplies
Chapter 910: A Gift
That very evening, Bai Meiyue went to look for Wang Fugui. As soon as she arrived at the tent where the seer lived, the man knelt in front of her.
"What are you doing?" She was startled when she saw the man suddenly kneeling in front of her. She even backed away from him because of his sudden actions. Was he about to faint or something?
"It seems like you have finally brought me something that can help me with my bloody visions," Wang Fugui choked out, his shoulders shaking with manic exhaustion. "I just saw a starship burning in the sky...the world turning to salt...people who haven’t even been born yet screaming and talking in languages that don’t even exist. I am getting tired."
"If you hadn’t come... I was thinking of gouging my eyes out."
"There is no need for you to gouge anything out." Bai Meiyue rolled her eyes; her tone was cool and unbothered by the horrors that Wang Fugui was telling her. She walked inside the tent, ignoring the man who was kneeling in front of her and sat down on the chair behind him. "However, I do hope you have thought of a way to pay me for the device that you have asked me for. It is quite an expensive solution, I must say."
She reached out and took out the case that she had brought with her. Withdrawing the key that she had kept with her, she opened the crystalline case that she brought with her. With a resonant click, the air peeled back, revealing the chronos filter visor that she had bartered with Kael.
"This world does not have the tech to help you," said Bai Meiyue, snapping the latches of the case closed. "This visor uses active temporal dampening. It compresses multidimensional radiation down to a narrow, single-stream pinhole. You won’t be blind, but you won’t see forty timelines at once either."
She stood up from the chair and then walked around the man before sliding the cool obsidian visor over his eyes and buckling the heavy leather straps around his skull. "Now, open your eyes."
"No, I cannot—" Wang Fugui refused at once. His voice was filled with terror when he thought about even opening his eyes; how could he even think of opening his eyes? If he opened them, he was worried that he would end up seeing all those horrors once again, and that would be truly terrifying.
"Don’t you trust me?" Bai Meiyue asked with a raised brow. She did not know whether this visor would work or not, but she believed in her barter system. "Just trust me; open your eyes slowly."
Wang Fugui froze. He did not want to offend Bai Meiyue, but he was still scared of opening his eyes. However, when he thought about what he would see when he opened his eyes, Wang Fugui was terrified of it. However, he still pursed his lips and started to slowly open his eyes. He shuddered and parted his eyelids behind the dark, polarised glasses.
However, this time around, the screaming in his head did not echo. The overwhelming torrent of dead galaxies and future wars did not hit him. Instead, through the narrow, high-density lens of the visor, he only saw the shadowy outline of Bai Meiyue standing in front of him.
He let out a long, trembling breath, his hands shaking as he touched the smooth metal chassis of the visor. "It is silent...I can just see you...nothing else but you."
"You have no idea what it cost me," Bai Meiyue said, stepping back and leaning against the desk that was behind her. She folded her arms and stated, "Nothing is free in my safe base; you know that, right?"
She pulled a fresh ledger from her desk, unshielded her pen and started to write in it.
"Here are your lease’s terms," Bai Meiyue continued smoothly. "First, the visor remains the property of the exchange. If you leave the safe base without my permission, the visor will stay behind. Once a week, you will step inside the safe base, unlatch the latches of the gear on that visor for ten seconds and tell me about whatever you have seen in your vision. I can use those visions for my own benefit and interests."
She slid the ledger across the table toward him, holding out the pen.
"You wanted quiet in your head, and I gave it to you. But from this second on, your eyes and skills belong to this safe base. Do we have an agreement?"
Wang Fugui looked at the ledger that was placed in front of him; he glanced at the dark, elegant script on the paper, feeling the peaceful, dampening hum of the visor against his forehead.
Without a word, he took the pen and signed his name on the ledger.
"I agree to your terms, Miss Bai," he murmured softly. "I will sell the future to you."
He then stood up from the ground and walked around the tent; this time around, he no longer bumped into anything and could move with ease. With a click, he opened the drawer of the desk and pulled out the wooden elephant that he had carved with his own hands. "This is a little something that I have carved for you."
Bai Meiyue glanced at the wooden carving, and suddenly her throat felt a little tight. Although the details were rough, it could be seen that he had put his heart into the carving.
Bai Meiyue took the gift from the man and thanked him sincerely. "It’s rare to have a heart; I don’t think I have ever seen anyone worry about such small things. Xiao Cai will definitely like this."
The fact that the man was willing to put Xiao Cai in his heart and make something for him showed that he was a good person.
Even though the gift that he gave was useless, his intentions were true and now that the end of the world was here, who could afford anything for a baby?
