Chapter 917: If Only

"How can he do such a thing?" On the other side, Old Madam Bai snapped harshly. With a bang of her fist on the armrest, she spoke in an angry voice, "You are his daughter whom he had raised for so many years. How could he say such a thing to you? What is he even thinking? Is he trying to embarrass you in front of that country bumpkin?"

When Old Madam Bai heard that not only Bai Meiyue had insulted her daughter but even Old Master Bai had insulted her, she could not help but turn furious. It was one thing that the woman with no good upbringing would say such a thing, but she could not believe that her husband would actually side with that outsider. So what if she was related to them by blood? She was, in the end, just a piece of flesh that fell out of her body and nothing else.

She had not raised her and had never known what kind of life that girl had lived. She was even cheated out by a man and was left to raise two sons on her own, while her daughter was taken away and used by her bastard of a husband. She was utterly foolish! She did not admit it, nor did she want to accept someone like Yan Wanning as her daughter.

"How can...how can he do such a thing?" She screeched, causing everyone to lower their heads and wince. "And what about you, Murong? When your aunt was getting humiliated, where were you? You are an ability user. You could have dealt with those people."

Bai Murong’s lips twitched. He turned to look at his grandmother and could not help but say, "Grandmother, I am an ability user; that is true, but I am just a normal ability user. I cannot take more than twenty ability users, and there were more than four S-class ability users. If I had made a move, then Bai Meiyue would have killed me right then and there."

"Then you should have died! Died for the honour of your aunt!"

"Mother!" Madam Bai could no longer listen. She glared at her mother-in-law and said, "If your daughter is precious to you, then my son is precious to me. Don’t just say anything because you are angry. If anything, if you ask me, it is the fault of Sister Yi that such a thing happened. I am afraid she did the wrong thing by starting a quarrel with Sister Wanning."

"Shut up! Who are you to speak in such a manner with your sister-in-law? And who is Sister Wanning? You only have one sister-in-law, and that is Bai Yi and no one else." Old Madam Bai snapped at her daughter-in-law, but her voice was slightly softer because Madam Bai had also awakened an ability; she was afraid that if she pushed her daughter-in-law too much, this woman might kill her right away.

She lowered her voice and added, "I did go too far right now, but how can I not get angry? Why did he not protect his aunt back there? Those people were bullying her left and right and even fooled his grandfather—"

"The one who is getting fooled is you, grandma. There is no need to deny this matter; even if you chose to ignore it, it was Aunt who insulted Aunt Wanning first. She called her a country bumpkin who did not know her place. Do you think that her children will listen to such a thing silently? No child would be willing to listen to such a thing! What’s more, when she went there, she did not say a word of polite greeting and simply demanded that Sister Meiyue hand over more than seventy per cent of her resources to our family. Why would she do such a thing?"

Bai Murong still felt angry when he thought of the good things that his aunt had done at the safe base where his cousin lived. "You think that I do not wish for our family to get better? But there is a way to ask for something from others. Are we still living in the same world? Where you can kill someone and then get away without getting any consequences and then hide the truth? No! We are living in a world where you will get killed if you kill someone! This is the world where the strong prevail."

"And Bai Meiyue is stronger than me. She can flood our entire safe base if she is angry enough. I am sorry, but I cannot take a fight with a woman that strong." After he finished speaking, he got up from the couch and marched right out of the mansion without looking back. He was tired. Tired of how much his grandmother loved Bai Yi. He understood that Bai Yi was the daughter she had accepted as her own, but he was also her grandson! How could she just ask him to die?

Madam Bai watched her son leave and then glared at her husband tearfully. She had given birth to three sons for this family, and they were not even treated as well as Bai Yi. In the past, she used to accept this biased attitude of her old mother-in-law because she thought that Bai Yi was the biological daughter of the Bai family, but now that she knows that Bai Yi was not even family, how could she be willing to accept the biased attitude? This woman was not even related to them by blood, and she still had to treat her better than her own sons?

This was something that Madam Bai would never be able to accept; she too got up from the couch and marched away.

"Wife!" When Master Bai saw his wife leaving, he chased after her, feeling sorry for her.

When Old Madam Bai saw her son leave after his wife, she was so angry that her face turned blue. "That darned son of mine!" She breathed heavily, but in the end she could not help but lose her temper at her precious son; instead, she turned to look at Bai Yi and sighed, "How could you not awaken? If only you had awakened."
