Gold light flared brilliantly against the gathering shadows, and Kael’s experience bar surged over the threshold, his level ticking upward with a satisfying mechanical chime.

Level 49.

One solitary step short of fifty. One step shy of the fifth class advancement, the monumental achievement rewards that accompanied it, and, far more pressing than either, the long-awaited opportunity to finally activate the Empyrean Sigil and step across the threshold into the mythic map waiting behind it.

He had never once heard a single whisper of the Empyrean during his entire first life.

Entry requirements this punishing, this deliberately hostile, did not exist without something extraordinary crouching on the other side.

Whatever secrets sat concealed behind that gate, it possessed the raw potential to change everything.

A heavy, mournful retreat horn resonated from behind the distant, mist-shrouded hills just as the thought settled into his mind.

Westfall’s vanguard had ultimately failed to fracture the Winterwatch Legion’s stubborn line in time, and Northvale’s main force had successfully completed its crossing in full.

Whatever tactical advantage a sudden, lightning strike might have originally offered was now entirely gone.

Pressing the assault further at this juncture would merely mean throwing bodies away for zero strategic gain.

With Westfall’s forces pulling back, the chaotic bedlam that had dominated the muddy riverbank for hours finally subsided into something resembling quiet.

It left in its wake a sobering landscape of broken bodies, scattered arrows, and the smoldering wreckage of a battle that had very nearly decided the whole campaign in a single night of fire and blood.

Kael left several hundred Starborn behind to clear the field, making his own way back toward the Legion’s position, his blade still resting heavily in his hand.

The horrific cost of holding that line was written plainly across the camp. Thirty thousand had crossed at the start of the night.

Fewer than ten thousand remained standing now, every one of them wounded, slowly rotating out to rest while fresh cohorts took their place on the line.

Heavy losses, by any military standard. Yet balanced directly against that staggering cost lay an undeniable, monumental outcome: the line had held, the crossing had succeeded, and the momentum of the entire campaign now rested firmly on Northvale’s side of the ledger.

Elara’s personal standing had undergone an absolute transformation overnight. She had commanded from the front throughout the entire battle, refusing to pull back even when the situation turned genuinely desperate.

Word of that kind of unshakeable composure under real, bloody pressure spread like wildfire through the army.

Not a soul in this camp would ever dare dismiss her as a political placeholder again.

Kael’s own reputation had climbed with equal, terrifying velocity. A level-48 Beastlord carving solo through entire formations was one thing.

Standing alone between a hundred-thousand-strong army and the Legion’s exposed flank at the precise moment the campaign hung in the balance, and simply refusing to yield, belonged to an entirely different category of contribution.

Soldiers along the line watched him walk back through their ranks with open, unguarded respect.

Even Elara’s personal guard, hardened veterans every one of them, carried none of their earlier skepticism in their expressions.

Nobody would ever question his standing as her guard captain again.

Elara met him with a slow, measured nod, carefully masking any overly familiar warmth behind the stoic discipline required in front of the assembled soldiers.

"Tonight’s contribution won’t go unnoticed. Once the larger campaign settles, I’ll petition both the General and my father directly for proper recognition."

Kael inclined his head in silent acknowledgment, then turned his gaze back toward the rushing waters of the Silverflow.

Dozens of robust pontoon bridges now spanned the width of the river simultaneously, hundreds of thousands of Northvale troops streaming across in disciplined columns.

Players mixed throughout under NPC guidance, the entire crossing moving with breathtaking efficiency.

Several miles out across the mist-shrouded plains, Westfall’s forces, pulled in from Rivergate and the surrounding camps, were still assembling their own lines, the two massive armies settling into a tense, hostile standoff across the open ground between them.

Alexis found him shortly thereafter, her own guild’s forces having crossed alongside the main army.

She covered the remaining distance on foot, her sharp gaze fixed intently upon Ebonreach’s titanic walls hanging suspended in the dark sky overhead.

"That’s your guild’s headquarters?" A sharp, unmistakable thread of raw envy laced her voice. "Should’ve guessed. You kept the best territory for yourself and sold off everything else."

She had watched the entire breathtaking spectacle unfold through the live stream from across the river: the sudden, impossible reveal of the sky-city, the devastating curtain of enspelled archer fire that had broken a hundred-thousand-strong army cold.

Envy came easily when witnessing a stronghold that powerful and that untouchable hanging silently in the firmament, fully aware it belonged to someone else entirely.

Kael allowed the remark to pass without comment, offering no further details about the city’s defenses. Instead, he smoothly shifted the conversation.

"Picked up a fresh batch of gear tonight. Interested?"

He shared the loot catalog from the fallen strike teams without further preamble.

Alexis’s eyes widened as she scanned down the glowing list of item statistics.

Twenty elite operatives, heavily state-funded, outfitted with gear far beyond the reach of any standard guild, and even suffering a crushing, decisive defeat at Kael’s hands hadn’t changed the simple fact that their equipment ranked among the best currently circulating on the server.

Between the absurd drop odds of the Ring of Infinite Fortune and the sheer body count, well over half of everything those twenty had carried now rested securely in his inventory.

A haul of this magnitude was enough to outfit a dozen of Evertide’s top players overnight.

She closed the deal without a moment’s hesitation, a full million gold changing hands instantly, profound satisfaction gleaming in her eyes.

Whatever it takes to keep this connection alive, she thought, already planning her next opportunity to make herself useful.

The trade window had barely flickered closed when a familiar, cautious voice broke the silence from behind.

"Unrivaled. Could we have a word?"

Kael turned slowly to find Marcus Webb and Casey Doyle standing a few paces away, their postures tense, their expressions carefully neutral.

Knew this shoe was bound to drop eventually. He arched a single eyebrow, his tone light. "What brings you two all the way out here?"

Webb cleared his throat, visibly shifting his weight in mounting discomfort. "After your claim about the satellite leak, leadership took it seriously and ordered a full internal investigation."

"We found the source. Everyone involved has been detained. The man behind it has already been executed."

"Leadership wants this handled cleanly, and hopes none of it threatens the arrangement we’ve already built."
