Gao Yuan was dressed in black, his face devoid of expression. He was a completely different person from the gentle, refined man Qin Xiaolan was used to seeing.

In fact, if you weren’t truly familiar with him, you would think he was a different person entirely, someone who just happened to look like Gao Yuan.

Xu Zhi said, “Are you worried about running into him? We can wait and go in after he leaves.”

“Okay.”

That was what Qin Xiaolan was thinking, too. She knew that Gao Yuan’s presence here, to a certain extent, proved her previous suspicions—aside from the matter with his ex-wife—were all correct.

Gao Yuan had well and truly deceived her about so, so much.

She didn’t want to face Gao Yuan right now. She sat there, her gaze lowered, feeling utterly at a loss once again.

Xu Zhi took out a thermos from the side. He said, “It’s cold. I brought you some hot water. I made sure to rinse the thermos before I left. It’s clean, and I haven’t used it.”

Qin Xiaolan took the thermos and said a quiet “thank you.”

Xu Zhi was a little worried about her, but it wasn’t the right time to say anything.

Perhaps what Qin Xiaolan needed most was some peace and quiet.

Gao Yuan was inside for about forty minutes. When he came out, a woman in her forties or fifties was standing beside him. She wore glasses and seemed to be a staff member from the sanatorium.

The two of them spoke for a while at the entrance before Gao Yuan left.

In the time it took for him to go in and come back out, Gao Yuan’s face remained expressionless. Perhaps it was because of the distance; you might have needed to be closer to see if there was any other emotion in his eyes.

After Gao Yuan was gone, Xu Zhi and Qin Xiaolan got out of the car and entered the sanatorium.

Because Xu Zhi was a public official, he could say he was there to get an understanding of the situation. The staff were very cooperative, especially since some of them recognized him.

Qin Xiaolan soon saw an elderly couple.

The woman was in a wheelchair, holding a cloth doll in a dress and chuckling vacantly.

The man’s face was weathered with hardship, and the smile on his lips was forced, revealing more helplessness than anything else.

A staff member said, “This couple has been living here for many years. The old lady has dementia and doesn’t remember anything. The old man is lucid, but his health is poor and he doesn’t talk much. He just stays by his wife’s side.”

Xu Zhi turned back to Qin Xiaolan and said, “We’ve tried talking to Old Sir Gao to understand the situation, but he won’t say a thing. He just shakes his head occasionally.”

‘Qin Xiaolan had no idea what had happened to this family.’

‘But since no one could get anything out of them, she thought that perhaps the best thing for the elderly couple now was to not be disturbed.’

Just then, Xu Zhi suggested they go talk to the director to learn more. Qin Xiaolan nodded and followed them to find her.

But as they were leaving, Old Sir Gao looked up, watching the direction they went.

He had faintly heard them mention his son’s name.

Just then, the old lady dropped the cloth doll she was holding onto the floor and burst into tears.

“My daughter! My daughter!”

Old Sir Gao picked up the cloth doll, carefully patting all the dust off it. He said, “It’s okay. Our daughter is still here. Our daughter is still here.”

“Oh, right. Our daughter is still here. Our daughter is still here.”

Meanwhile, Qin Xiaolan learned from the director that Gao Yuan visited the elderly couple regularly.

The director—the same middle-aged woman with glasses from the entrance—said, “Sigh… speaking of which, that boy Gao Yuan has had a hard life. I heard his wife even divorced him. With his parents like this, he’s raising a child all on his own.”
