“But you knew… knew very well how much I liked him…”

Ning Anran sobbed and turned her face away, not wanting to look at her.

“You could have told me earlier, let me give up hope sooner; that way, I might not have suffered so much.”

“I told you not to put too much thought into Uncle, he’s impossible…”

“Yes, you didn’t want me to like him, because you yourself are his woman!”

Ning Anran’s voice turned hoarse as she interrupted her, and upon saying this, she cried even harder.

Baili Xia just quietly watched her profile, unsure what to say.

Love really can change a person.

Ning Anran never used to cry; she was very strong.

But now, before anything had even happened, she was already crying so heartbrokenly.

“Do you know, after I found out you two were together, I was really upset, I… have had such a hard time.”

Eventually, Ning Anran couldn’t stand it anymore, and ran to crouch under a tree, hugging her knees.

Hearing Baili Xia approach, she didn’t look up, but simply gazed tearfully at the little grass on the ground.

“Every day, I watch the man I like the most walk together with my best friend. Do you know how much my heart aches?”

It hurts so much, so much that even breathing becomes difficult, so much that I can’t even sleep well at night.

Baili Xia gazed down at Ning Anran’s curled-up figure, her heart filled with all sorts of feelings.

After a long silence, she finally said softly, “If you’re really feeling so miserable, then why don’t we move back to the dormitory?”

“Why? Why should I have to avoid you? Why is it always me that has to give way?”

Ning Anran looked up at her, fiercely wiping away tears.

Baili Xia really didn’t know what to say and ultimately could only sigh lightly.

“An Ran, there’s no such thing as giving way or not giving way, you’re thinking too much.”

Uncle was not hers, nor did he belong to Ning Anran.

Since he was not theirs, how could there be any talk of giving way?

But Ning Anran tugged at her lip, offering a bitter smile, “Are you trying to mock me, saying I don’t even have the right to give way?”

“That’s not what I mean, it’s just…” But in the end, she bit her lip and said no more.

If words were spoken, they were bound to hurt.

She really didn’t have the right to give way, because Uncle was not hers.

That was a fact, but it was really hurtful to say such things when she was so heartbroken.

So, Baili Xia said nothing, just quietly watching her.

Without speaking, Ning Anran felt even more desolate.

There’s nothing left to say, is there?

The desolate tears kept falling from her face, cold and bitter.

But who would pity her?

No one spoke again.

Ning Anran, tired of crouching, stood up and sat down on a stone bench not far away, staring vacantly at the lake.

Baili Xia still stood there, silent like her, watching the occasional ripples on the lake.

After an unknowable amount of time, Ning Anran finally spoke up again, “Leave him, Xiaxia, stop hurting him.”

“…” Wordless, unsure what to say, she didn’t even have the energy to speak.

Ning Anran didn’t turn back to look at her, still staring at the lake.

“He’s a respected figure in Jin City, he has a great life ahead, he could even be said to be the god of Jin City.”

The person behind her didn’t speak or make any movement, but Ning Anran didn’t mind and continued.

“His reputation and status cannot be shaken by anyone.”
