“You…”

Countless swear words flashed through Xiaxia’s mind, but none of them made it out. She could only curse Mu Xiaoyao silently hundreds of times in her heart.

“Believe it or not, I’ll say it one last time: this has nothing to do with me.”

“I’m just like you, I’m worried about Xiaxia’s safety too.”

“Now even I’m on the kill list. If I were really the bad guy, would I still be helping them cover things up?”

By the end, Xiaxia’s voice had unconsciously dropped a few notches.

She felt a bit powerless. Mu Xiaoyao was just too stubborn.

She’d been talking all afternoon till her mouth was dry, and he still refused to believe her.

Mu Xiaoyao gave her a faint glance and said nothing more.

After driving for a while, they gradually saw more signs of life.

Now and then, there were even a few shops along the roadside.

At last, Mu Xiaoyao pulled up at a small store with a car parked at the door and brought their car to a stop.

He said flatly, “Get out.”

They were in the middle of running for their lives—why were they getting out now?

She had no idea what Mu Xiaoyao was up to, but Xiaxia still obediently opened the door and got out.

Once she was out of the car, Mu Xiaoyao looked at her calmly and said, “Got any money?”

Xiaxia was slightly taken aback, confusion written all over her face, but she still nodded.

“Go buy something to eat. I’m hungry.”

Xiaxia’s brows twitched; only then did she understand why he’d stopped.

The moment he said that, her stomach growled loudly in response.

She hadn’t eaten anything for so long either; she’d been starving for a while now.

Xiaxia shot Mu Xiaoyao a glare and said with open sarcasm, “Aren’t you afraid I’ll run off?”

Mu Xiaoyao ignored her and simply turned away, choosing not to respond.

Helpless, Xiaxia could only head into the little shop.

In this kind of tiny village store, there wasn’t much for sale, and the food options were simple.

Xiaxia had no choice but to randomly grab a few pieces of bread and some biscuits, then took two bottles of water and went to pay.

When she came out, she saw Mu Xiaoyao talking to some man.

The man looked overjoyed, his face lit up as if he couldn’t be happier.

When he saw Xiaxia come out, Mu Xiaoyao stopped talking to the man and walked toward the car.

Only, the car he walked to wasn’t the black Maybach, but the other battered, ordinary sedan.

Mu Xiaoyao opened the door and got in.

Seeing Xiaxia still standing there in a daze, a hint of impatience flashed in his eyes.

“Get in.”

Xiaxia snapped back to her senses and hurried over to him.

Only then did she realize that Mu Xiaoyao had just swapped cars with that man.

Thinking it through, she could understand: if they wanted to completely shake off Nangong Yun and the others, they had to change cars.

His Maybach was just too eye‑catching; anywhere they went, it would be spotted easily.

It was just… trading such an expensive car for this junker felt like way too much of a loss.

Mu Xiaoyao started the car with a mechanical key, and the headlights came on.

The dim beams barely lit up the road a short distance ahead.

Which was exactly what he wanted—the simpler, the better.

Watching the beat‑up car that had been with him for years drive off, that man was grinning so wide you could barely see his eyes.

Still, he hadn’t forgotten what Mu Xiaoyao had instructed him just now: for the next day or two, he had to hide that Maybach somewhere as secret as possible.

After a moment’s thought, he grabbed the key, got into the car, and drove it down a small path not far away.

In the blink of an eye, that dazzling Maybach had vanished into the night, leaving no trace behind.

Back on the main road, Mu Xiaoyao immediately took out his phone and called Wu Ming.

But after calling twice in a row, all he got was the same message: the other party’s phone was switched off.
