Chapter 335: The Grim Reaper’s Path
"Qin An!"
He Li watched the scenes unfold and he felt like his heart dropped dead the moment he saw the man weakly lay down his own body on the cold floor. All the truths he saw from some time disappeared and he didn’t even care about that devil who was named after him anymore— all his sight was set to the grim reaper laying in the ground.
His head starts aching badly awhile ago and these memories that he watched all along seems to penetrate inside his head, playing like a broken radio inside his mind.
He understood everything. These memories are his.
He ran fast and kneeled down. He instinctively wanted to pull the man on him yet the moment he spread his arms, it only went through the man’s body.
His body went frozen. How could he forget? This is not his world.
His outstretched hand turned into a tight fist and the corner of his eyes turned red. What to do? What can he do to help him?
But even if there is... it’s too late.
He could clearly see that Qin An is no longer alive.
And it’s all for that devil.
He put his hand on his chest, feeling the tightness and excruciating pain inside.
He understands the truth.
So this is why he always felt familiar to him. That is why every time he saw his hand, it always felt as if he’d already seen and even held those. It happened in this life.
It was him who gave him a new life even though he doesn’t deserve a second chance.
"Ah Si..." he whispered that name in the wind.
How? How could he just discard everything he has just for him? Isn’t he just a devil who only did horrible things in this world? Everyone dislikes his existence. He betrayed him.
He chose to create chaos even though he knew that he always cherished humans. He is just like those greedy souls who betrayed him again and again.
They— he did not deserve his blessing. He is not worthy of the merit that he spent years making. He did not deserve the sacrifice.
Helplessness and despair rushed on him. It’s all his fault. Everything is his fault! How can one turn back to the life that you’ve worked hard for? How can you just let everything fade and forget? And even with a new life, will their fate meet again?
No matter how he resented himself, there was nothing he could do. The hall was enveloped with a deafening silence and just as he thought that there’d be no hope, someone suddenly appeared inside the hall and rushed towards them.
It was No. 22. Disbelief and horror flashed on his face when he saw the body of his friend and quickly asked the Judge what was going on. Upon hearing the truth, Ji fell in silence.
He was also dumbfounded about No. 444’s choice. Who would have expected that the grim reaper who was known for his indifference and heartlessness could make this choice? It even cost his own life yet he didn’t hesitate to give it, not just to someone but to the devil himself, an enemy.
He exhales a deep breath and kneels down. He reached out and softly wiped the blood stain on the man’s forehead. "Your Majesty, is there no other way for Ah Si?"
The Judge didn’t answer.
"Ypur Majesty, No. 444 served the underworld with extreme diligence. He worked more than anything else and had not neglected any responsibilities ever since. I understand that there are consequences and payment for everything but isn’t this too unfair for him? He didn’t do anything wrong."
His eyes stayed at the grim reaper with tenderness on his eyes. "He just learned how to love and cherish everything when he had a heart."
All he did was to express his sincerity to everyone. After learning how to feel emotions, the grim reaper just wanted to treat the people he had treated that he thought he neglected for many years, especially those souls. He wanted to make it up.
And for the devil, that was his companion. A devil that stayed with him as he discovered the meaning of his existence. Was it wrong to thank even if it was a devil? Just like him, the latter also didn’t care about the differences of their identity as long as their hearts beat the same.
"Your Majesty, please give him a chance to live." He pleaded. The Judge didn’t answer him right away. "Your Majesty, please consider No. 444’s abilities. He’s one of the grim reapers who always works efficiently. He didn’t ask for something big nor even an authority but wholeheartedly served the underworld. Isn’t it a pity to just let him go?"
The Judge finally had a reaction and squinted his eyes. "What do you want to say?"
"Your Majesty, please let No. 444 start over. Give him a chance to be a grim reaper again." He stood up and continued. "I can also offer my merit. Your Majesty, I gathered more than enough from the mission that you gave to me. You can use it for Ah Si."
The Judge had a thoughtful expression on his face as he darted towards the two grim reapers. Everyone would really fall the same as long as they have heart. Many grim reapers chose to have another fate after developing deep connections or felt intense emotions towards others.
No matter who they are— humans, grim reapers and even the devil, as long as they have a heart, they are willing to do everything.
"Alright." He finally said after a thought. "I will take a portion of your merit to let No. 444 start all over again."
No. 22’s face immediately brightened and he bowed deeply. "Thank you, Your Majesty!"
He Li, who heard the conversation, was also delighted. Hope envelopes his heart as he looks at Ji with gratitude. There’s a chance! Ah Si can live again!
He excitedly looked down at Qin An’s face. "A-Ah Si, you will live again!"
The Judge did as he said. Golden spiritual energy gathered around No. 444 from No. 22’s body. It enveloped the man’s body and he was turned into a golden sphere with a small chain of runes circling around it.
"Go to Naihe and ask for mengpo soup. I want No. 444’s past memories sealed as he starts over again." This was the Judge’s condition which Ji readily agreed.
They disappeared and went to the said place and after No. 22 stated his purpose, the lady in that place didn’t say anything.
"Mistress, is there something wrong?" Ji asked.
"Why did he want to erase his memories?" she asked.
"I don’t know the Judge’s reason."
She clucked her tongue in annoyance and stared at the golden sphere. She extended her hand. "Let me see."
The lady held the golden sphere and the pupil’s on her eyes turned glowed into pale silver. It seems that she was watching something for a few seconds before turning back to normal.
She tilted her head for a bit and lent the sphere back to No. 22. "Take it back."
They were surprised. "Mistress?"
"You don’t have to worry and you don’t have to tell him anything else. Take this grim reaper back and wait for him to be alive again."
He Li fell into thought. He heard about the bridge of forgetfulness and this is the last bridge that every soul must cross. To drink the mengpo soup in order to forget everything.
She refused to let Ah Si forget everything.
Does that mean that Qin An will also remember this life?
