Blood on the Canvas, Gold on the Screen
Chapter 479: Apex of Apathy
Chapter 476: Apex of Apathy
The restoration of the thermal perimeter brought a fleeting, fragile peace to the vast, borderless tundra of storm-grey crushed velvet.
Alex Turner shifted slightly beneath the heavy, slate-colored silk quilt. The dense, collective body heat generated by the eight women surrounding him had successfully stabilized his core temperature. His fathomless, pitch-dark gaze remained fixed on the frosted skylights above. He was the undisputed gravitational center of the room, a black hole of absolute, unyielding inertia that had just flawlessly manipulated a hypothetical burning building to avoid sitting up.
For eleven minutes, the newly established republic of leisure functioned exactly as intended.
Then, the psychological toll of possessing infinite wealth, zero responsibilities, and absolutely no external adversaries began to aggressively rot the minds of the Hollywood elite.
"I miss applause," Mariah Carey announced abruptly.
She was lying gracefully on her back in the eastern quadrant, her hands folded neatly over her ribbed knit cardigan. She delivered the statement to the ceiling, her tone dripping with a profound, existential melancholy.
"I miss standing on a stage, hitting a perfectly modulated high note, and watching forty thousand people simultaneously lose their minds. I miss the acoustic validation of my own existence."
From the western edge of the velvet plains, Salma Hayek let out a sharp, highly cynical laugh. "You want validation? We are currently lying on a floor that was expanded by a demolition crew three hours ago because we couldn’t figure out how to sit on a sofa without kicking each other. The only validation you are going to get in this room is someone passing you a grape."
"I am serious, Salma!" Mariah protested, rolling her head to the side. "We are artists. We are performers. We have massive, delicate egos that require regular, high-decibel feeding! My ego is currently starving to death on a giant grey sponge!"
"Ego is a caloric parasite, Mary," Alex murmured, his deep baritone rolling effortlessly across the open floor plan. He did not turn his head. "It is a microscopic tapeworm that lives in the cerebral cortex and demands that you burn precious glucose to impress strangers. You should be thanking me for starving it. I am acting as your spiritual physician."
"I don’t want a spiritual physician, I want a standing ovation!" Mariah countered, kicking a loose silk pillow in frustration. "Gillian, back me up. Don’t you miss the red carpet? Don’t you miss people screaming your name?"
Gillian Anderson, who was comfortably wedged between a bolster and Alex’s left calf, let out a husky, breathless chuckle. She was wearing a simple, draped emerald slip dress, her eyes closed in absolute comfort.
"I am currently experiencing the profound joy of not wearing a corset, Mary," Gillian replied smoothly. "If you want me to clap for you, you are out of luck. Clapping requires the violent, repetitive collision of the palms. It creates dermal friction. Alex would probably fine me for acoustic pollution."
"Clapping is a percussive tragedy," Alex agreed instantly. "It is the primitive slapping of meat to signify approval. If you truly respect a performance, you should honor it with absolute, awestruck silence."
Angelina Jolie propped herself up on her elbows, a wicked, fiercely competitive spark illuminating her features. The boredom was practically radiating off her skin, and she immediately sensed an opportunity to manufacture internal chaos.
"Mary has a point, though," Angelina purred, her gaze sweeping across the tangled mass of A-list royalty. "We are the most famous, highly decorated women on the planet. But out there? The industry is dead. There are no more Oscars. There are no more Grammys. Alex literally bought them and turned them into blank screens."
"A massive improvement," Alex noted lazily.
"But it leaves a power vacuum," Angelina continued, ignoring him entirely. "Without trophies, without box office numbers, how do we measure hierarchy? Who is actually the most successful woman in this room?"
Shakira sat up immediately, her fiery curls bouncing as her competitive instincts flared. "Are we talking global record sales? Because if we look at the international demographics, my touring revenue in South America alone—"
"Touring implies that you voluntarily boarded an aircraft and sweated in front of a crowd," Monica Bellucci interrupted. The Italian actress shifted gracefully closer to the center, her voice dripping with elegant, aristocratic malice. "That is not success, Shakira. That is manual labor. In this republic, effort is a sign of poverty."
Jennifer Aniston laughed brightly, adjusting her position so her head rested perfectly against Alex’s shoulder. "Monica is right. The old metrics are dead. Box office means you worked. Platinum records mean you worked. The only currency that matters on the velvet tundra is the optimization of apathy."
"A flawless deduction, Jen," Alex praised softly, perfectly content to let them tear each other apart as long as they didn’t require him to move. "Prestige is now measured exclusively by your proximity to absolute stasis."
Courteney Cox, unable to suppress her organizational nature, immediately sat up and began smoothing out a microscopic wrinkle in the heavy grey fabric beneath her knees. "So, what? We are having a competition to see who is the laziest? That’s absurd."
"You are instantly disqualified, Court," Jennifer pointed out with a triumphant grin. "You are actively smoothing a wrinkle. You are performing textile maintenance. That is a blue-collar chore."
Courteney froze, her hands hovering guiltily over the velvet. "I was just optimizing the terrain!"
"You engaged your forearms to fight a crease," Alex diagnosed bleakly. "You are a victim of your own domestic ambition. You are out."
"Okay, fine!" Salma challenged, sitting cross-legged and glaring at the group. "If we are judging this based on Alex’s insane philosophy, who wins? Because I successfully weaponized the lunch menu to defeat a studio executive yesterday. That has to count for something."
"It counts for basic survival, Salma," Angelina smirked, leaning back and lacing her hands behind her head. "But your heart rate is currently elevated. You are gesturing with your hands. You are visibly agitated. Passion is a failure of thermal management. You are disqualified."
Salma opened her mouth to argue, realized that yelling would only further prove Angelina’s point, and snapped her jaw shut with an aggressive, highly frustrated huff.
"What about me?" Mariah asked, desperately trying to lower her voice into a calm, unbothered register to mask her competitive desperation. "I recorded a platinum single yesterday using only a silicone throat patch. I didn’t even open my mouth. I outsourced my entire vocal range to a microchip."
"A strong entry," Gillian conceded, her husky voice barely rising above a whisper. "However, you just complained about missing applause. Seeking external validation requires an emotional vulnerability that burns cognitive calories. You are still tethered to the opinions of the working class. Disqualified."
Mariah gasped softly, deeply offended by the sheer accuracy of the psychological profiling.
"This leaves the inner circle," Monica purred, looking at Jennifer, Angelina, and Gillian. The four women who were physically closest to Alex—the geographic core of the room—exchanged looks of lethal, calculating diplomacy.
"I haven’t used an articulating joint in an hour," Angelina bragged softly, refusing to turn her head. "I am essentially a beautiful, highly hydrated log."
"I successfully executed a tactical roll to the powder room earlier," Gillian countered seamlessly. "I completely eradicated the necessity of bipedal walking. I bypassed the tragedy of ankles entirely."
"I utilized gravitational leverage to slide down a three-degree incline directly into Alex’s side," Angelina fired back, her competitive edge sharpening. "I utilized physics to achieve physical contact without engaging my core."
"Amateurs," Jennifer giggled, resting her hand lazily on Alex’s chest. "When we initiated the thermal strike twenty minutes ago, I was the one who physically moved my leg to drop Alex’s head onto the floor. I initiated the rebellion that broke his climate control."
"Yes, but you didn’t invent the rebellion, Jennifer," Monica noted smoothly. The Italian actress offered a slow, devastating smile. "I was the one who suggested the strike. I noticed the environmental vulnerability, I formulated the strategy, and I convinced you to execute the physical labor of moving your leg."
The room fell entirely silent.
Jennifer’s blue eyes widened as she processed the maneuver. Angelina and Gillian stared at Monica in profound, unfiltered respect.
"You outsourced treason," Alex murmured, his deep voice slicing through the quiet. A slow, genuinely impressed smirk finally graced his features. He did not look at Monica, but his approval was absolute. "You identified a weakness in my regime, formulated a hostile sanction, and manipulated a peer into performing the kinetic exertion required to execute it. You orchestrated a coup without moving a single muscle."
"I am a master of delegation," Monica whispered, her eyes fluttering shut in sheer, victorious satisfaction.
"It is a high-level administrative maneuver," Alex declared to the vaulted ceiling. "The hierarchy has been established. Monica has achieved peak apathy. She is the undisputed apex predator of the velvet tundra."
"I demand a recount!" Shakira yelled, completely abandoning the rules of the game. "This is rigged! She literally just lay there and took credit for Jennifer’s leg movement!"
"That is the definition of upper management, Shakira," Alex reasoned flawlessly. "The CEO does not swing the hammer. The CEO simply points at the nail. Monica pointed. Jennifer swung. Monica profits. It is flawless corporate structuring."
Jennifer let out a long, theatrical groan, playfully shoving Alex’s shoulder. "I can’t believe I just got demoted to middle management in a competition about doing nothing."
"You performed the labor, Jen. Accept the consequences of your kinetic energy," Alex replied effortlessly.
The sprawling, wall-less room dissolved into a chorus of chaotic, highly entertained laughter. The crushing, existential boredom that had threatened to tear the group apart just minutes prior had been entirely neutralized, replaced by a hilarious, utterly absurd new social hierarchy.
They were no longer Hollywood royalty fighting over box office receipts or magazine covers. They were citizens of a highly insulated, deeply absurd republic, fighting over the geopolitical rights to absolute laziness.
Alex shifted his weight slightly, feeling the collective body heat of the women pressing comfortably against him. The architectural demolition had been a success. The domestic rebellion had been transformed into a parlor game. The perimeter was completely, hopelessly secure.
"Now," Alex commanded softly, his voice dropping back into a register of icy, uncompromising authority. "The crown has been awarded. The egos have been addressed. I officially mandate a total cessation of competitive bantering. The next person who attempts to establish a hierarchy will be relocated to the foyer."
"You can’t relocate us to the foyer," Salma called out from the eastern plains, a lingering trace of amusement in her voice. "You knocked down the walls. The foyer is just the edge of the bed."
"Then you will be banished to the perimeter, where the drafts are relentless and the ambient heat is zero," Alex countered effortlessly. "Close your eyes. Embrace the void. Do not make me outsource my annoyance to Vanguard."
Surrounded by the victorious smirks and soft, melodic sighs of the most powerful women on earth, the Slacker King sank deeply into the velvet, absolutely certain that his empire of inertia was running exactly as designed.
