Chapter 477: Solar Eviction

The mandated cessation of competitive bantering lasted for exactly twelve minutes.

It was not broken by a spoken word, a ringing phone, or the violent entrance of a corporate fixer. It was shattered by the relentless, entirely un-bribeable progression of astrophysics.

Because the interior walls of the first floor had been systematically erased by Vanguard operatives hours earlier, the architectural defenses of the estate had been fundamentally altered. Without partitions to block the natural light, the sprawling, borderless tundra of storm-grey crushed velvet was completely exposed to the sprawling skylights and the massive, motorized glass patio doors.

As the afternoon crept forward, the Earth continued its silent rotation. And with that rotation, a sharp, distinct, and highly aggressive parallelogram of direct, unfiltered California sunlight began to crawl across the floorboards.

It moved with agonizing slowness, creeping over the velvet plains until it made direct contact with the eastern flank of the collective pile.

Specifically, it landed squarely across Mariah Carey’s face.

Mariah’s eyes snapped open beneath her silk sleep mask. She did not move her body, but her hands instantly flew up to shield her cheekbones.

"I am being actively roasted by a celestial body," Mariah announced to the room, her voice a sharp, melodic hum of pure outrage. "My dermatologist explicitly banned direct UV exposure after 2:00 PM. Someone needs to turn off the sun."

Alex lay perfectly supine in the geographic center of the velvet expanse, clad in his faded, ultra-soft vintage band shirt and heather-grey lounge pants. His shadowed gaze remained fixed on the ceiling.

"I cannot halt the rotational velocity of the Earth, Mary," Alex murmured, his deep baritone rolling effortlessly across the open floor plan. "The planet is currently spinning at approximately one thousand miles per hour. Interfering with planetary momentum is an administrative burden of cosmic proportions. I absolutely refuse to engage in a dispute with gravity."

"I am not asking you to fight gravity, Alex, I am asking you to fix the lighting!" Mariah complained, refusing to shift her weight. "My skin is absorbing photons. It is an aesthetic tragedy. Do something."

"The sun does not know who you are, Mary," Alex reasoned flawlessly. "It is a thermonuclear fusion reactor millions of miles away, radiating heat indiscriminately. Do not take astrophysics personally."

Salma Hayek, who had been lying in the cooler, shaded territory near the foyer, suddenly sat bolt upright. Her eyes locked onto the glowing square of sunlight illuminating Mariah.

"Wait," Salma gasped, her fiery competitive instincts flaring. "You are complaining about natural warmth? In this over-conditioned icebox? I am freezing! I will gladly take the sunlight. Move out of the way, Mariah. I am claiming the solar quadrant."

"I am not moving," Mariah countered stubbornly, crossing her arms over her ribbed knit cardigan. "I earned this geographic location during the territorial negotiations an hour ago. If I roll away, I forfeit my proximity to the snack console."

"You literally just said the sun is an aesthetic tragedy!" Salma yelled, crawling aggressively across the grey velvet on her hands and knees. "You cannot hoard the sunlight if you hate it! That is a biological monopoly!"

"I am protecting my investments!" Mariah shrieked, blindly waving a hand to fend off the approaching actress.

"Both of you, cease your kinetic flailing," Alex commanded lazily, not lifting his head from the plush surface. "You are generating a localized draft. Salma, if you wish to absorb ultraviolet radiation, simply wait. The Earth is doing the labor for you. Based on the current trajectory, the sun beam will cross Mariah’s face and naturally migrate toward the center of the room in approximately twenty minutes. Patience requires zero calories."

Gillian Anderson let out a husky, cynical laugh from her position near Alex’s left calf. She was draped in her emerald slip dress, her eyes closed in absolute amusement. "He is literally telling you to wait for the planet to move rather than shifting your own body weight three feet to the right. The sheer density of his laziness is defying science."

"It is the path of least resistance, Gillian," Alex noted.

However, the geometric reality of Alex’s prediction suddenly dawned on the rest of the room.

Jennifer Aniston, resting her head comfortably against Alex’s shoulder, blinked. She traced the invisible line of the moving sunlight across the velvet. Her blue eyes widened in sudden, absolute horror.

"Wait a minute," Jennifer gasped, sitting up. "If the sun beam is moving toward the center of the room... that means it is moving toward us. We are in the direct path of the glare."

Angelina Jolie unspooled her legs, a wicked, defensive spark lighting up her features. She looked at the approaching parallelogram of light as if it were an approaching army. "I refuse to squint. Squinting causes premature micro-creasing around the ocular nerves. It is an unacceptable expenditure of facial tension."

"Then you must roll, Angie," Alex stated seamlessly. "Migration is the natural consequence of a shifting ecosystem."

"I am not rolling into the outer rim!" Angelina shot back, slapping the velvet floor. "The outer rim is practically a different zip code! We are the capital city! We hold the Prime Meridian!"

"You destroyed the walls, Alex!" Courteney Cox accused, her organizational neuroses violently resurfacing. She began frantically stacking bolster pillows, attempting to construct a makeshift, free-standing shade structure. "Without the dining room partition, there are no shadows! You eradicated the concept of shade!"

"Shadows are merely the absence of photons, Court," Alex lectured softly, completely unfazed by the rising panic. "I provided you with an infinite, borderless republic of plush cushioning. I cannot be blamed for your inability to adapt to the solar cycle."

Monica Bellucci, observing the chaos with the calculating grace of an apex predator, elegantly propped herself up on one elbow. She remained safely tucked in the southern, perfectly shaded quadrant of the room.

"This is a fascinating geopolitical crisis," Monica purred, her rich Italian accent dripping with diplomatic malice. "The capital city is about to be scorched by a celestial body. The citizens are trapped between the indignity of moving and the tragedy of squinting."

"You are in the shade, Monica!" Shakira pointed out, her curly hair bouncing as she pointed an accusatory finger at the Italian actress. "You have optimal thermal and visual conditions! Share the territory!"

Monica offered a slow, devastating smile. "I will gladly grant a temporary transit visa into my shaded quadrant. However, the toll is steep. I require exclusive, uncontested access to the next delivery of sparkling water, and Angelina must surrender her footrest privileges for the remainder of the afternoon."

"Extortion!" Angelina hissed, glaring at Monica. "I am not trading my footrest for a shadow!"

"Then you will burn, darling," Monica smiled warmly, resting her head back against her arm.

"I am not moving, and I am not paying a tariff," Jennifer declared stubbornly, lying back down and pulling a thick silk blanket entirely over her head to block the light. "I am simply going to pretend the sun does not exist. Denial is a highly effective shield."

"Denial is an emotional burden, Jen," Alex murmured.

As the minutes ticked by, the inexorable march of the solar system continued. The bright, blinding square of light finally crossed the velvet boundary, slipping off Mariah’s face and landing directly, unmistakably, across Alex’s torso and face.

The room fell dead silent.

The Harem Council held its collective breath. They watched the Slacker Emperor. The glare was intense. The ambient heat within the localized beam was significantly higher than the carefully regulated sixty-eight degrees of the surrounding room.

Surely, the glare would force him to move. Surely, the discomfort of the raw, unfiltered sunlight hitting his eyes would force him to at least turn his head, engage his neck muscles, or raise a hand to shield his face.

Alex did not flinch.

He did not raise a hand. He did not shift his spine. He simply let out a long, slow, rhythmic breath, remaining entirely, flawlessly supine in the blinding light.

"He’s not moving," Salma whispered in absolute awe, leaning forward from the perimeter. "The light is directly in his eyes, and he is not even blinking."

"My eyelids are closed, Salma. The biological shutters are engaged," Alex drawled, his voice a perfectly flat, unyielding drone.

"You are going to overheat," Gillian warned, leaning safely out of the light’s path. "You are wearing a heavy-gauge cotton shirt, and you are lying in a localized greenhouse. Your core temperature is going to spike."

"I am engaging in passive photosynthesis," Alex reasoned seamlessly.

Angelina let out a sharp, breathless bark of laughter. "Photosynthesis is for plants! You are a human being!"

"Plants are the ultimate masters of leisure, Angie," Alex lectured, his dark hair illuminated by the golden glare. "A houseplant never commutes. It never pays taxes. It never argues over real estate. It simply sits in a designated location, absorbs radiation, and expects to be watered by its subordinates. It is the pinnacle of biological efficiency. I am currently operating as a high-end ficus."

"You are literally pretending to be a shrub so you don’t have to roll over," Courteney wheezed, her makeshift pillow-roof collapsing beside her as she shook with laughter.

"Rolling requires engaging the oblique muscles and shifting my center of gravity," Alex explained, perfectly content in his blinding, solar-baked stasis. "Absorbing the heat requires zero caloric expenditure. I have successfully merged with the environment. I am a botanical triumph."

"I can’t take it anymore," Shakira giggled, crawling across the velvet and completely invading Monica’s shaded territory, ignoring the Italian actress’s mock-outraged sigh. "He has an answer for everything. He just out-stubborned the sun."

"The sun is loud and aggressive," Alex murmured, his breathing slowing to a steady, hypnotic rhythm as the warmth washed over him. "But it eventually sets. It operates on a predictable schedule. All I have to do is outlast it. Victory through absolute, vegetative inertia."

Surrounded by the chaotic, highly entertained laughter of the industry’s most powerful women, the Slacker King sank deeper into the plush, wall-less expanse of the sanctuary. The domestic rebellion had been entirely neutralized, the solar crisis had been solved by botanical roleplay, and he had secured absolute peace without shifting a single inch. The borderless republic of leisure was functioning exactly as designed.
