Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign
Chapter 390: What the Stone Still Holds
Tobin had the inspection gloves ready when Ren arrived.
The booked service had brought him to Shadewell in time to collect the issued layers and take the covered route to the garden. Tobin met him at the keepers’ entrance and led him down to the other branch, where the feed had remained reduced for inspection.
"Change your hand covers for these," he said. "And put the face guard on before we open the access."
Ren packed the port’s hand covers and fitted the clear guard. He loosened his cloak in the sheltered gallery, leaving the harness beneath it.
Tobin had marked a small patch of lining with chalk. A ring identified the face point, and an inspection cover stood beside it. At the nearest outlet, a cloth strip lifted under the garden’s ordinary draft tending.
On a shelf lay a wooden box of short, waxlike sticks in labeled slots. Their holders had long handles; the one for the deeper point also had a sleeve covering its tip and a stop that would meet the access rim.
"Each grade softens at a different temperature," Tobin said. "Light pressure, for this count."
He demonstrated at the center of the chalk ring. When he withdrew the holder, the tip had softened. The next grade stayed firm under the same contact.
"The point lies between those thresholds. Record both. Don’t press harder to make one give."
"And when I read it again?"
"Use a fresh tip. One that’s already softened won’t tell you whether the stone has cooled."
Tobin opened the inspection cover. With the tip shielded, he inserted the longer holder through a guide notch until its stop met the rim. That fixed its angle and depth. He showed Ren how to expose the tip against the deeper contact spot, hold it for the count, then cover it again before withdrawing.
He tested the next grade as well. Those two results placed the deep point one band above the face.
"Same patch, farther into the lining," he said, closing the access. "You’ll compare these two. I’ll keep checking the branch."
He wrote the paired thresholds on his card and drew a line beneath them for Ren’s readings.

Before handing over, Tobin had Ren follow the release working.
Ren held his hand clear of the wall and traced what he could through Fire. On his first visit, he had felt Tobin change the release without understanding how the lining maintained it afterward. Since then, two kilnstone sections had been grafted into the Worldroot.
He recognized more now. The cultivated layers continued drawing on stored heat even though the incoming feed had fallen. He followed that relationship through the marked patch, where Tobin adjusted the outward release. Farther into the branch, he lost it.
"I can follow it here," Ren said, indicating the chalked area. "Not much beyond it."
"That’s all you’ll be working on."
Ren took a pair of readings while Tobin watched his pressure and count. Both fell within the bands Tobin had recorded.
"The feed stays at its reduced setting," Tobin said. "For today, if these readings reach two bands apart, call me before changing anything else. I’ll take the patch. That leaves room before the difference becomes dangerous for this lining."
He pointed to the deeper pair of thresholds.
"The face can cool well ahead of this. Don’t use its reading to decide how the whole patch is doing."
Tobin eased his contribution back while Ren took over the release. The rest of the branch remained under the keeper’s control. Ren could follow what he was changing in the marked layers, but he still needed the contact readings to judge the result.
He increased the outward release a little.
The face responded readily. His next pair of tests placed it one band lower, and he kept the release at that rate. The lower reading looked like progress toward the inspection.
He reached to put the used holder beside his notes.
"Box," Tobin said, sliding it closer. "You’ll want to know which grade you’re holding."
Ren returned it to its labeled slot and reached for another fresh tip to check the face.
"Read the deeper point before you change it again."
He used the long holder, keeping it at the stop for the same count Tobin had shown him. The deeper point still softened the earlier grade and left the next one firm.
It had not left its original band. The face had dropped one; the readings were now two bands apart.
Ren left the release unchanged. "Two bands. I need you to take it." He kept his working steady while Tobin reached into the patch.
"That’s our handback point," Tobin said. "Ease yours out. I’m taking it."
Ren withdrew as Tobin’s working replaced his. Under the keeper’s control, less heat left through the face, though the release continued.
’I’d cooled the part I could see.’
His face readings were accurate. He had kept taking them because they changed readily, while leaving the slower part unchecked.
Tobin kept the access closed between readings. Heat continued reaching the face through the cultivated layers, and the next tests showed that the difference had stopped widening. He maintained the lower release while they waited for the deeper reading to change.
"You saw the face drop," he said. "Then you kept the same release without checking what was supplying it."
"I thought it meant the patch was cooling."
"It was. Unevenly."
Ren looked at the two columns on the card.
"If I let less out, the face stays warm enough for the inside to catch up."
"Within the range I’ve given you. Don’t stop the release altogether."
"And if I hold it back too much?"
"We’re still waiting when the inspection is due." Tobin set a used holder into its slot. "Both points need to cool. They don’t have to do it at the same rate, but you have to keep checking the difference."
He took another pair of readings before letting Ren resume. The deeper point had entered a lower band; the pair was closer again. Tobin showed him both results, then handed over the patch as carefully as before.
Ren began with less outward release than on his first attempt.

He checked both points before making another adjustment. At the face, he tested the fresh tips against the same spot inside the chalk ring. At depth, he seated the holder against its stop and kept the same contact count.
This time he followed the release and its supply together. As the deeper layers gave up heat, he reduced the outward rate before the face could run ahead again. Some readings stayed within the same bands as the previous pair. He recorded those too, rather than changing the working simply to make a lower grade appear.
Tobin remained beside him for that run, checking the entries against the holders Ren returned to the box.
When they paused, the keeper took responsibility for the patch while Ren wrote up his observations. Tobin went along the branch to inspect the other points. The section continued cooling under its reduced feed; nothing had been reset for another attempt.
He returned and opened the box.
"Take a fresh pair. You’ll manage from those without my corrections."
Both readings were lower than the ones Ren had started with. Their difference remained inside the limit, but there was less heat behind the face now. Reusing his first release setting would have taken too much out of it.
He followed the established working as Tobin handed over and set a lower outward rate.
Tobin kept the adjoining release steady, leaving Ren to manage the marked layers himself.
The face remained in its band through the next check. Ren left the rate alone and tested the deeper point. That reading had not crossed a threshold either. He could follow heat still moving through the layers, but the sticks gave him no finer measurement to record.
He continued at the same release until the next paired check.
The deeper point entered a lower band while the face had changed less. Ren made a small adjustment, then waited long enough for another comparison. When the face’s reading fell, he checked behind it before deciding whether to continue at that rate.
Tobin watched without directing him. Ren had to judge when the release still suited the stored heat and when it needed reducing. He kept the changes small enough to check before making another.
The outlet strip continued lifting. It showed that air was still moving there; Tobin’s separate inspections accounted for the wider branch.
By the end of the run, both sampled regions had cooled further and their readings remained close. Tobin tested them himself with fresh tips. His results fell within the same bands Ren had recorded.
"That’s enough for today," he said. "I’ll take it back."
Ren withdrew his contribution in stages. Tobin’s working took over the patch, continuing through the cultivated layers beyond Ren’s reach. After the handover, the keeper read both points again and left the feed reduced.
"Is it ready?" Ren asked.
"This patch is further along. I haven’t cleared the branch."
Tobin brought out the section’s record and entered Ren’s checked pairs beneath the earlier readings. He left a space for the next inspection.
"I’ll check the deeper points before deciding what can be opened. These tell us how your patch cooled."
Ren copied the pairs into his notebook after the junction sketch from his Air lesson. He included the contact positions and the bands that had prompted the handback. The later entries showed both points falling while staying within Tobin’s range.
Tobin closed the inspection cover and gathered the holders. Ren returned the gloves and face guard to their place on the bench, then put on his own issued hand covers.
"Maren has Lenna’s time for you," Tobin said. "See her before you leave."
She had the window ready in the garden office.
"A bedstone stretch on this branch, on your next visit," she said. "Lenna will check it before deciding what you can work on."
Ren looked through the transport connections for that visit. He found an arrival that allowed for the port and the walk, then checked the return service. Once both fitted, he booked and gave Maren the arrival details.
She entered them beside Lenna’s appointment.
"I’ll pass those on."
He put the sheet with his notes and fastened his cloak before leaving the covered entrance. On the walk back, he stopped in the shade, clear of the foot traffic, and asked the System privately for the result.
[FIRE: 18.3% → 19.0%.]
At the port he returned the issued layers and confirmed his connection home. He sat with the notebook open on his knee, reading down the paired entries. The first attempt had lowered the face reading while leaving the deeper point in its earlier band. In the later run, both had come down.
He left space beneath the final pair for what Tobin found at the next inspection.
