Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Chapter 391: How the Stone Carries

  • Next Chapter

Lenna was already beneath the bed when Ren arrived, and Nel was waiting for her at the terrace edge.

The journey had gone as booked: the port, the issued layers, then the covered walk to the garden. Maren’s clerk had directed him to the stair serving the other branch and handed him a lamp. Nel, the grower who had cleared the lifting points before they moved the settled bed, pointed down with a loose length of tie.

"When you’ve finished borrowing her, I need her at the next bed."

"I’ll try not to keep her."

She laid the tie beside the shoot she had been securing and let him pass.

Below, the gallery wall held the beds above in a web of cultivated stone. Solid connections ran around root recesses and narrow air passages. Lenna stood beside one of the larger openings, measuring between two scribed marks with her caliper. A pale root filled much of the recess.

"It’s thickened since the earlier checks," she said. "Nel has the growth records. I have these."

She showed him the measurements on her slate. The distance between the stone marks had decreased across successive checks; the side beside the root was drawing inward.

"There’s still clearance. I want to keep it."

Ren could sense the living root close to the surface. He followed it as far as he could see, where it entered the soil beneath the bed. Lenna moved the lamp closer to the stone beside it.

"This connection is carrying too much of the bed’s load now. These two can take more."

She indicated routes above and below the recess, then the adjoining air passage.

"I’ve checked both. Work within this patch. If either opening starts narrowing, stop the change and hold what you have."

With her probing rod, she checked the soil at a known position clear of the root. The cloth strip marked the depth. She compared it with her slate, withdrew the rod and set it on the ledge.

"Watch the lower connection first. I’ll move a little of the load onto it."

Her palm settled against the wall. Ren rested his covered hand beside hers and followed the Earth working into the stone.

On their first job here, he had lost the pressure’s course around the recess. Since then, he had grafted two bedstone offcuts into the Worldroot and worked through connected supports at the Nightfire shelter. Now he could follow Lenna to the junction where the three connections met. Her working reached into the cultivated pattern there, and the lower connection began taking more weight.

She withdrew. That small share stayed where she had directed it.

Ren followed the pressure farther, until the connections passed deeper into the wall and he lost them.

"I can follow this patch," he said. "Not beyond it."

"Stay with what you can follow. There’s still more to take off the connection beside the root."

She measured the openings again and entered the readings. Her adjustment remained in place as she made room for him.

Lenna kept a hand against the wall.

"I’m watching," she said. "I’m not supporting your patch. If I need to, I’ll tell you."

Ren eased the loaded connection, taking up more of its share through the routes above and below. The inward pressure lessened, and the edge of the recess eased outward a fraction. Lenna checked it against the clearance she wanted for the root as it was now. The air passage retained its width.

"Enough there. Withdraw slowly."

He reduced his working a little at a time. At first the pressure held where he had put it. Then more began returning to the connection beside the root.

Lenna checked the marks again. The recess had started narrowing toward its reading after her demonstration. Ren stopped withdrawing, keeping his remaining support steady. The movement stopped.

’I was still holding it.’

"It comes back when you let go," Lenna said. "Follow where the connection takes it."

He traced the pressure through his own working. He had moved the load successfully, but his Earth was still holding it on the neighboring routes. It was the same support he had provided beneath the open inspection face. As he withdrew, the stone resumed carrying that portion through its old course.

At the junction, Lenna’s smaller adjustment was still working. The lower connection retained the share she had given it.

Ren followed that part of the cultivated pattern before reaching into the adjoining connection. He kept his support steady while he adjusted where the stone directed the next portion of the load. Then he eased his own contribution and felt the upper route continue taking it.

He paused there. Lenna measured the recess and passage; neither had narrowed.

He worked farther through the junction, giving the lower route more of the remaining share. Each time he eased his support, he checked what the connections carried without it. The old route still bore weight, but no longer enough to press its edge inward.

The last part of his hold took longer to release. He had been following the upper connection and had to return to the lower one before he could be sure the change held across both.

Lenna waited beside him.

When his working was fully withdrawn, he took his hand off the wall. She did the same. They watched the marks while air continued through the neighboring passage.

Ren could still feel the load through the stone. He followed it around the root recess without trying to direct it. The heavier share remained on the two checked routes.

Lenna measured again, moving from the recess to the air passage and the marks beside the receiving connections. Then she laid her palm against the wall to read the pressure.

"That’s holding," she said. "The connection beside the root is still carrying its part. The others have kept the rest."

"You haven’t been supporting it?"

"No. I’ve only been reading it."

She entered the measurements beneath the earlier ones. Ren looked back at the junction. He had needed his support while he adjusted it, but the bedstone no longer depended on that hold.

Lenna had checked the second recess before he arrived. She showed him its readings and the limits of the patch he could work.

The root was smaller here, with more space around it. The connection beside it nevertheless needed easing. One available route bordered an air passage; the farther route already carried weight from the adjoining stone.

"Both can take more," Lenna said. "Check what each is carrying as you change it."

Ren followed the pressure through the untouched patch. Lenna watched from beside the ledge, leaving the work to him.

The near route was easy to reach, but giving it the whole excess would concentrate the load along the passage’s edge. The farther connection offered more room for the transfer, though it already had a substantial share of its own. He needed both.

He found the junction and began adjusting its cultivated working, holding the local load steady while he changed the distribution. More went toward the far route, less toward the near one. He checked the receiving connections before reducing his support.

The first reduction held. Ren used the caliper at the passage’s marks, then checked the recess. He set the tool down within reach and continued.

As more of his support came away, the far connection took a greater share. He followed it to the edge of the checked patch, where that pressure met the load it already carried. Before withdrawing farther, he adjusted the split so the near route took a little more.

The passage retained its width. He checked the far route again, then released the remaining support in stages.

Neither opening moved when he finished.

Lenna left him to observe it before making her own checks. He kept the caliper on the ledge and his hand clear of the stone while she measured the recess, the passage and the neighboring marks. Her palm returned to the wall last.

"The distribution has stayed," she said. "Those connections are carrying it without either of us supporting them."

She wrote the figures under the second recess’s entry and added a note for her next inspection.

"It’ll need tending again as the root grows," Ren said.

"It will. You’ve changed what it carries now."

She put the caliper away. With the checks complete, she called up to Nel that work on the bed could continue.

Above them, Nel picked up the tie she had left beside the shoot. She looped it around the support, secured the stem and tucked the end away before moving along the bed.

Ren watched her finish. His hand was still hovering beside the wall. He lowered it and put it in his pocket.

Lenna checked the usual positions along the stretch with her rod and slate. She left both adjustments as they were and noted where she would measure again on her next round.

"Maren has Tobin’s time for you," she said as she gathered her tools.

Ren took his lamp back up the stair. Alone on the landing, he asked the System privately for the result.

[EARTH: 12.6% → 13.3%.]

He read it once, then continued to the garden office.

Maren had the inspection window ready.

"Tobin is doing the deeper checks on the cooling section. He’d like you there. Bring your readings so he can show you what the next checks add."

"I’d like that."

"He’ll decide what can be opened after he’s read the deeper points."

Ren set his notebook beside the slate and found the page from their last session. The contact positions and paired readings were there, with space below for Tobin’s next inspection.

He checked transport for the new visit: an outbound service with time for the port and the covered walk, then a return that left room for the appointment. Both fitted. He booked them and gave Maren the arrival details.

"I can make that. Tell him I’ll be there."
