Chapter 141: Ch 141: Response from the Labs

"A letter... from the labs?"

Erin looked at the paper in front of him with a frown on his face. He had a bad feeling about the letter in front of him without even opening it, and he could not help but rub the mark on the back of his neck.

It was not actually a mark, but someone’s ability that was controlling him and keeping an eye on him. And right now, it was really active.

It told him that the head scientist at the labs was keeping close tabs on him so he could not be as free to do things as he would like.

Still, he had not expected them to send a message this quickly. The last time he talked with them, they said that he had a few more months here before the grand experiment.

"Hopefully this letter won’t be anything grand. Let’s hope that I don’t see anything bad in this."

Erin ripped the seal carefully before he began to read the contents of the letter. But the second he did, he immediately wished he had not.

[Hello, my dear blue bird.

How are you doing at the academy? Are you having fun during your last days in this world? Well, I am glad for it. But don’t forget that nothing in this world is free. That includes this last trip as well.

Let’s come back to the main topic, shall we? We have changed our recent study field, and one of my subordinates has started an experiment on Noah of all people. Alas, I had to deal with her because of her foolishness, but since this has started, what can we do?

Anyway, here is what I want you to do next—keep an eye on Noah and report back to me anything that happens. I have made sure to inform the academy as well, but they don’t know the reason just yet.

Since Noah has become our next test subject, we shall bring him back when the time comes. Until then, keep an eye on him and make sure he gets to live. I would be utterly devastated if something were to happen to him.

The chief researcher.]

Erin crumbled the letter in his hand as soon as he was finished reading it, and his insides felt hot and cold at the same time.

"This is such bullshit—!"

He could not help but complain while looking at the letter in his hand. He wanted to throw it away as soon as possible...but was he truly capable of this?

The labs had sent him here to keep an eye on the academy and Noah. They were aware that he was planning something as well, so they wanted to use Erin as his leash.

The labs even knew that Erin was not on their side, but they still took this risk because they believed that they were in the right.

’Sigh.’

"What a situation this has turned out to be. If the chief researcher has sent me a letter, then that means he is running out of patience. It won’t take long before he makes an actual move...well, sends someone to make a move."

Despite being in the labs for years at this point, Erin had never actually seen the chief researcher.

In fact, no one had seen him except Noah. But even Noah could barely recall what he looked like.

Anyway, the main problem now was the fact that Noah had become the next test subject of the lab, which was not supposed to happen. He was too low-class to be considered as a research subject.

’Darn it! What changed? And why Noah? They could have chosen anyone else. So why him and what kind of experiment—’

Erin suddenly recalled how Noah had looked last night when he came to talk. He had been pale, and his eyes had been out of focus this whole time. It was hard for him to even concentrate.

And Erin had sent him back without checking up on him, which made him feel awful.

"I should go and check up on him. Noah is..."

He checked his phone, which had a tracker for Noah, and noticed that it was in the medical wing. It worried him and made him feel relieved at the same time.

Erin immediately stood up and left his room, not bothering to think about anything else as he made his way toward the medical wing.

His steps were faster than usual, and although he tried to convince himself that he was only going there because Noah was now a test subject of the labs, he knew that was not the only reason.

’Please be okay, Noah.’

The moment he reached the medical wing, Erin pushed the door open and looked around, quickly searching for Noah among the beds.

When he finally spotted him, he felt some of the tension leave his body.

Noah was sitting on one of the beds, looking exhausted but otherwise fine. But Daniel looked unhappy to see him.

"What happened to him?"

Erin asked immediately, and Daniel looked like he did not want to answer him. But after a few seconds of thinking, he finally did.

"Nothing serious. He came here because he was feeling dizzy and had trouble concentrating, so we decided to run a few tests."

Erin’s expression darkened at those words.

"Dizzy?"

"Yes, but his condition seems stable. We are still waiting for the results."

That sounded like a lie. Daniel was lying to him because he did not want Erin to know what happened to Noah. So he looked directly at Noah to know the answer, and the guide shook his head and mouthed ’Later’.

It seemed like Noah wanted to talk to him later about what happened, which made him feel a little relieved.

’At least Noah is not keeping this all to himself. I might not like this, but it is better than the alternative of not knowing what happened at all.’

So Erin agreed for now and decided to wait for Professor Riku to come and check up on Noah once more.
