Cannon Fodder In Apocalypse: I Rule With Sanctuary Evolution System
Chapter 157: Great Master
Once induced, a half-beast might experience an overwhelming urge to find a mate.
In severe cases, the instinct could become so powerful that the affected individual would temporarily abandon even the most important responsibilities.
And that was exactly what was happening to Zero.
He desperately wanted to remain beside Mo Beichan and protect him.
However, his body was no longer responding properly to his intentions.
His breathing became heavier, and his thoughts grew increasingly disorganized. ‘No. I need to stay here.’
Despite his resistance, his instincts gradually overwhelmed his judgment.
Eventually, Zero staggered away from the living room.
Meng Xiaoni watched him leave. Their plan had worked.
……
Meanwhile, Mo Beichan remained unconscious on the floor.
Even in his sleep, he vaguely sensed danger approaching.
He desperately tried to open his eyes, but his body refused to respond.
Only after some time did he finally regain consciousness.
The moment he moved, pain spread throughout his body.
He felt as though someone had beaten him mercilessly.
However, his physical discomfort was the least of his concerns.
Mo Beichan forced himself to sit up. He immediately noticed that several drawers had been opened.
His expression changed. Ignoring the pain, he hurried toward his desk and began searching through the documents.
He checked the drawers, cabinets, and hidden compartments.
However, the documents he was looking for were nowhere to be found.
His heart sank. “I fucked up.”
He knew exactly what this meant.
Meng Xiaoni had taken the documents.
Mo Beichan clenched his fists. After thinking for a moment, he suddenly remembered something.
He hurriedly retrieved the Dead Recalling Mirror.
It was a small, antique-looking mirror with a dark metallic frame. Strange symbols were engraved along its edges, and its reflective surface had a faint gray tint.
Mo Beichan stared at it thoughtfully. Until now, he had only used the mirror to contact the dead.
But what would happen if he tried using it on someone who was still alive? Would the living person answer?
Or would the mirror somehow cause that person to die?
Mo Beichan’s eyes darkened. ‘Hopefully, it’s the second possibility.’
He immediately held the mirror and began chanting Meng Xiaoni’s name.
However, nothing happened. The mirror remained completely still.
Mo Beichan tried again. There was still no response.
Only then did he realize that the Dead Recalling Mirror truly worked only on deceased individuals.
Just as he was about to put it away, a mechanical voice suddenly echoed from the mirror.
[Special Offer Available! By sacrificing five years of your lifespan, you may establish contact with one Great Master.]
Mo Beichan froze. ‘A Great Master?’
He had heard that title before.
According to Su Yao, Great Masters were powerful individuals who possessed knowledge and abilities far beyond those of ordinary people.
He hadn’t expected the Dead Recalling Mirror to possess such a hidden function.
‘So this mirror still has features I haven’t discovered.’
He suddenly remembered hearing that certain rare artifacts contained hidden surprises that could only be unlocked under special circumstances.
Perhaps this was one of them.
Without hesitating for too long, he said, “I accept.”
The mirror immediately responded.
[Request Accepted. Confirming Lifespan Deduction.]
Mo Beichan gritted his teeth.
Although the offer mentioned five years, the final confirmation showed that the connection would cost him ten years of his lifespan.
For a moment, he hesitated.
Ten years was no small price.
However, if he could contact a Great Master, the benefits might far outweigh the cost.
He took a deep breath. “Confirm.”
The next second, a strange sensation swept through his body.
His skin tightened, his joints ached, and a wave of exhaustion washed over him.
For a brief moment, he felt as though he had aged several years.
Then the mirror began glowing.
Its gray surface rippled like water before gradually revealing an image.
A young man appeared inside.
He had handsome features, a charismatic smile, and an elegant appearance.
His skin was smooth, and his neatly styled hair framed a face that looked almost too youthful for someone carrying the title of Great Master.
At that moment, the young man appeared to be adjusting his appearance.
However, when he suddenly noticed Mo Beichan staring at him through the mirror, his expression changed dramatically.
He looked startled.
He even stumbled backward, nearly crashing into the wall behind him.
Then he muttered something under his breath.
His handsome face twisted into an expression of obvious disgust.
Mo Beichan stared at him in confusion.
He couldn’t hear what the young man was saying clearly.
Nor could he understand why the other party was reacting so strangely.
After realizing that Mo Beichan couldn’t hear him, the young man snapped his fingers.
The next second, Mo Beichan felt as though the air around him had become clearer.
Then a faint, melodious voice reached his ears.
“You peasant! How dare you stare at me like that?”
Mo Beichan panicked for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure.
He looked directly at the figure inside the mirror and replied calmly,
“I’ve already paid with my lifespan. I don’t think I need to kneel before someone who has accepted payment for providing a service.”
The Great Master stared at him. Then, unexpectedly, he smirked.
“You have quite a lot of evil energy surrounding you. From what I can see, you’ve committed many evil deeds throughout your life.”
He paused, examining Mo Beichan more closely.
“However, there’s also a faint trace of golden luck mixed into that energy. If I’m not mistaken, you were once a good person.”
Mo Beichan blinked, looking unimpressed. “Master, isn’t that a little too vague?”
The Great Master ignored his dissatisfaction.
Instead, he continued staring at Mo Beichan with an increasingly serious expression. “You’re going to meet your end soon.”
Mo Beichan shuddered; the uneasy feeling in his heart got amplified.
Before he could respond, the Great Master continued, “And the person responsible for your death will be your own wife.”
“What?”
“She’ll eventually consider you an embarrassment and decide to eliminate you with her own hands.”
