Chapter 157: Chapter 157: Results of the Match Will Be Announced the Day After Tomorrow

He’ll do whatever it takes to eliminate Renee Morgan.

This is definitely something Hugh would do.

This was a detail Jay Monroe had neglected before. Realizing it now, he quickly suggested to her, "Morgan, how about we switch? You go support Luke Luca’s team, and I’ll handle the customs reinforcements. You’ve been fighting along the mountain route every time, you know it best, Hugh’s sure to have figured it out..."

Jay Monroe knows Hugh all too well. To get the highest score, Hugh doesn’t care about Team Red winning or losing. Ordinary people are nothing but insignificant insects to him; he’ll use any means necessary if need be.

Jay Monroe’s anxious expression made everyone else involuntarily look toward Renee Morgan with concern.

Renee Morgan’s score was too high, separating her from everyone else. Hugh was a full 27 points behind her.

It was inevitable that Hugh would target her.

Compared to Jay Monroe’s tension and everyone else’s worries, Renee Morgan was much calmer: "He wants to score off my elimination? Well, let’s see if he actually has the skill."

Renee Morgan’s crisp, decisive voice rang out, instantly dissolving the worry in everyone’s eyes; a faint smile appeared on their faces.

Jay Monroe looked at her seriously: "Morgan, have you thought it through? Are you sure you don’t want to switch?"

Renee Morgan shook her head before saying: "I was assigned the mountain route from the start; I can’t push you guys out there just because it’s gotten dangerous."

Everyone in the competition zone wants to survive to the end and get the highest score. She’s competitive but doesn’t want Jay Monroe to make that kind of sacrifice for her.

Jay Monroe finally stopped insisting.

The team leader spoke up: "Be careful with Hugh targeting you. Why not take more people with you?"

Renee Morgan didn’t want them to worry, so she nodded: "Alright."

...

The Team Red customs squad was wiped out. Renee Morgan and Dane broke into the Team Red territory, blew up more than ten of their patrol members—Team Red suffered heavy losses, dropping from over 110 to just about sixty.

At dawn the next day, scouts brought word: Team Blue had deployed two reinforcement squads, moving separately by sea and land, both heading their way.

Now Team Red only had around sixty, and Team Blue forces still in Team Red territory—including Renee Morgan’s elite squad—numbered around forty or fifty. Team Blue wasn’t daring to make bold moves, just engaging in minor skirmishes.

Once the reinforcement squads arrived, the assault on Team Red Tower would begin.

The Team Red commander knew they couldn’t wait any longer and, pressing forward desperately, ordered Hugh: "Take your men and hit their reinforcements; don’t let them merge and grow their strength."

Hugh and the Team Red commander both knew this was a trap set by Team Blue—there was no choice but to play along.

The defensive systems at Team Red Tower had already been sabotaged. With just this handful of people defending, defeat was inevitable in the end.

So they might as well take the offensive, break up Team Blue’s forces, and see who comes out on top in the final showdown.

Staying holed up in the tower now meant certain defeat.

"Yes, Commander." Hugh accepted the order and stepped out.

Team Red only had sixty remaining, and besides patrols, the tower needed enough force for defense. In the end, Hugh could only take a squad of twenty.

While Team Blue’s two reinforcement squads were still en route, Hugh led his squad into action, heading right for the customs-mountain route.

Renee Morgan’s team got the intel and started speculating—Was Hugh planning to forgo an ambush on the mountain route and head to the customs?

The mountain route only took forty minutes—there was no need to set out so early.

Dane: "Team Red has already pulled their customs guard squad. Is Hugh planning to intercept our people at the customs checkpoint?"

The guess made sense. The customs checkpoint had all sorts of barriers; with Hugh’s squad there, Team Blue’s reinforcements would have a hell of a time landing.

Bama disagreed: "If he does that, isn’t he worried we’ll seize the opportunity and attack Team Red Tower?"

Dane rubbed his chin: "That’s the strange part."

Team Red Tower was forty minutes from the mountain route, but the customs checkpoint was a whole morning’s journey from the tower.

Would Hugh abandon defense of Team Red Tower for a single reinforcement squad?

Even setting the goal aside, the Team Red commander would never agree to that.

...

"Let’s stick to the original plan. Renee Morgan and Dane’s squad will support the reinforcements coming via customs, while Jay Monroe and Bama’s team will handle the squad coming by land," repeated the team leader, reviewing the plan one final time.

The whole group checked their gear and got ready to move. Renee Morgan, wiping her sniper rifle, looked absent-minded.

Jay Monroe felt uneasy. He glanced back and saw her just rubbing her gun cloth over the same spot, so he reached out and snapped his fingers in front of her eyes.

Renee Morgan blinked her bright eyes, looking up at him: "What’s up?"

Jay Monroe squatted next to her with his rifle, a smile tugging at his lips: "I thought you weren’t scared of anything. Now you’re nervous?"

Renee Morgan was a crack sniper. If it came down to a fight, she might not be a match for Hugh, so being nervous was reasonable.

Renee Morgan’s confused look: "Nervous?"

Jay Monroe raised his eyebrows and clicked his tongue: "Come on, drop the tough act. Your face is written with worry."

Worry?

True enough...

Renee Morgan’s expression softened: "How do you know I’m not worried about someone else?"

The words were rather arrogant, but Jay Monroe rather liked it.

His eyes lit up: "Morgan, look at you—so confident! If you manage to blow up Hugh’s score, after the match I’ll..."

Suddenly he realized something was off, looked up, and saw Dane’s dark eyes staring at him with mocking amusement.

Wait a second...

No way...

"Morgan, you’re not actually worried about me, are you?" Jay Monroe spoke uncertainly, but his face changed almost instantly.

Why did Hugh set out so early?

The customs was so far from Team Red Tower—if they attacked the tower, Hugh couldn’t possibly get back in time. So what was his reason?

If he wasn’t going to the customs, and instead planned an ambush on the mountain route, there’d be no need to leave so early.

Is it possible Hugh’s real target was never the customs reinforcements, but the land route ones?

Hugh’s not coming for Renee Morgan anymore—he’s going for the weaker side?

His cousin—still as shameless as ever!

Given Jay Monroe’s earlier loyalty, Renee Morgan was equally direct: "How about we have the customs squad delay a bit? Dane and I will wait for movement on your side, and if Hugh really heads after the land route, Dane and I will rush to back you up?"

Dane shot Jay Monroe a sardonic look. Renee Morgan’s loyalty was obvious; the fact she’d go this far showed just how little faith she had in their ability.

Earlier, when they suspected Hugh might ambush the mountain route, Renee Morgan refused Jay Monroe’s offer to switch, and gave no indication she’d need extra help. It wasn’t a matter of necessity—her attitude toward a tough opponent was calm, steady, fearless, proof of her strong mind.
