CEO's Reborn Wife
Chapter 2758 - 2776: Double Standards
When you’re a human being, what right do you have to play double standards?
"You went to Thomas Lancaster, weren’t you trying to rely on Thomas to fix things? You went to Amber Edwards, you were also trying to rely on Amber to fix it for you. You even thought about going to James Black, and that was because you wanted to lean on James too." Jane Sampson’s expression was mocking. "When you, Emily Lancaster, want to lean on other people, why don’t you say you’re weak and easy to bully? But when I lean on someone, suddenly I’m a useless coward?"
"Emily, you used Lancaster’s wood business to get me to be their spokesperson and got what you wanted. Unfortunately, things didn’t go the way you expected. They snowballed into something so out of control that you can’t even afford the price now. You wallow in self?pity, you blame a lot of people, but you’ve never once blamed yourself." Nina Rice clicked her tongue. "Don’t you think your conceit is just pathetic?"
Because they were outdoors, and there were other people in the VIP room, Jane and the other girls didn’t say anything even more hurtful.
They were not unaware that Emily had been forced to her knees before Amber Edwards and her siblings; they just weren’t vile enough to bring that up in a setting like this.
A woman that proud—if she hadn’t been driven to a dead end, who would have the courage, who could cast aside over 20 years of backbone to kneel down to someone else?
Jane and the others knew that back then Emily had staked everything, so they gave Emily as much dignity as they could and never mentioned those things to her.
People being good at scheming isn’t wrong. But if you’re good at scheming, you bear the consequences when your schemes blow up.
Not everyone is willing to be someone else’s pawn, and not everyone is so easygoing that they’ll let you scheme against them however you like.
The Emily standing here now is both pitiful and hateful.
Emily practically fled in a panic, leaving the VIP room empty?handed, and her eye sockets were already red when she walked out.
"If she’d known it would end like this, why do what she did back then?" Quincy Forest shook her head. "She didn’t only have one way to break off the engagement. No matter how justified she makes it sound, she still can’t hide that when she did it, she already had it in her mind to screw little Jane over."
"Break off the engagement and, while she’s at it, disgust little Jane a bit—that’s what she thought was killing two birds with one stone." Nina Rice agreed with Quincy Forest. "It’s more likely that the reason she thought this method of breaking off the engagement was so great was exactly because it let her get under little Jane’s skin."
"The Lancaster Family and the Edwards Family’s alliance hadn’t even been made public yet; only some people inside the circle had gotten a few messages. Under those circumstances, calling off the marriage contract would’ve been really easy. Besides, the cooperation between the two clans was only at the ’we’re interested’ stage—nothing at all had been finalized."
"If she’d really wanted to break off the engagement, there were plenty of other ways." Quincy Forest spread her hands. "And honestly, Amber Edwards’s brother isn’t that bad, okay? Look around inside the circle—there are hardly any men who only love their work and don’t mess around with other women."
"Silly girl, not every man in this world is a notorious womanizer like that idiot Alexander Forest." Nina Rice looked at the pure, harmless Quincy Forest with a face full of pity. "Amber Edwards’s brother doesn’t have a girlfriend, but he’s got a regular mistress. It’s been many years."
"No way! How do you even know that?" Jane Sampson and Quincy Forest immediately closed in on Nina Rice. The three girls each had a booklet in their hands, but none of them were actually paying any attention to it.
