Chapter 245: Chapter 245: Everything Depends on This One Move

In her current state, the War Devil hadn’t recovered much compared to when she first returned. Falling from this height, there was no telling whether she would survive.

So War really was an idiot. She had been perfectly safe hiding in the shelter, yet she just had to run outside and get herself into trouble.

If the mighty War Devil actually ended up dying from a fall, that would be one hell of a ridiculous way to go.

"I’m screwed! I’m going to die! I’m really going to die!"

Naturally, Yoru was well aware of how bad her current situation was.

Kotone Asaba was just about to save her when the Death Devil moved even faster.

He hadn’t expected Death to intervene, which made him freeze for a brief moment.

But he immediately realized there was something he should be doing.

Wasn’t this his best opportunity yet?

The Death Devil’s attention was completely focused on War, leaving an obvious opening.

It wasn’t exactly honorable, but this was Kotone’s only chance.

Without hesitating any further, Kotone immediately made his move.

He saw no reason to bother with anything else. Going straight for his strongest trump card was the best option, because everything would essentially be decided by this one attempt.

Kotone had already deactivated his phasing. Without hesitation, he cast genjutsu on the Death Devil, even merging Makima’s Control power into it.

"Control alone obviously won’t have much effect on the Death Devil while she’s this overwhelmingly powerful, but combined with genjutsu, that might be a different story..."

That was Kotone’s reasoning.

He couldn’t guarantee that it would work, but this was already the greatest trump card he had.

If even this failed, then he truly had nothing left.

At that moment, the Death Devil’s body visibly stiffened for an instant.

Did it work?

Hope immediately surged within Kotone.

But his brows quickly furrowed.

If it had truly succeeded, he should have been able to sense a connection forming between himself and the Death Devil.

That connection... technically existed, but what he could feel right now was extremely faint.

In other words, he hadn’t completely succeeded.

Or rather, he had only succeeded a little.

The Death Devil remained frozen for only a moment before regaining the ability to move normally. She caught Yoru in a bridal carry, then lightly descended onto the rooftop.

Yoru landed safely, but she didn’t seem particularly grateful. She immediately stepped back twice and stared warily at Death.

The Death Devil, however, had no time to tease her sister. Instead, she turned toward Kotone.

"That was close. You almost managed to completely control me."

The Death Devil still wore the same composed expression.

Kotone shook his head slightly.

So it still failed...

"Still, I suppose you win. You’ve been fighting desperately to stop me. As someone who’s half human and half Devil, do you really care that much about other humans?"

There was a hint of helplessness in the Death Devil’s voice.

"It’s not just the other humans I care about. Two of your sisters don’t want you to do this either," Kotone replied.

At the same time, he was surprised.

The way she was speaking almost sounded as though she was compromising.

Apparently, what he had just done had at least produced some effect.

The two sisters Kotone was referring to were, of course, Makima and Fami.

The Death Devil paused, then involuntarily looked toward Makima and Fami.

"I suppose that’s true..."

Of course, this wasn’t because the Death Devil had suddenly changed her mind of her own accord.

Kotone’s genjutsu and Control power had affected her.

It wasn’t enough to actually control her, and she was fully aware of what Kotone had done to her, but her thoughts had nevertheless been forcibly altered.

Her original unwavering determination to make all of humanity "evolve" had been shaken just enough that she now found herself considering Kotone’s opinion.

The change itself was extremely slight. Even Death knew exactly what had happened to her.

But in the end, her resolve had still been shaken.
