Chapter 278: Chapter 191: Lu Fan Gains His Mother-in-Law’s Approval, The Dream Son-in-Law?
Just as they were chatting, a van pulled up at the entrance to the village.
An old man with salt-and-pepper hair, looking hale and hearty, walked over carrying a medical kit. It was Director Li.
Lu Fan went up to greet him, feigning enthusiasm. "Director Li, thank you for making the trip."
Director Li immediately extended his hand. "Lu... Xiaolu, hello."
Seeing this, Pan Lanfang, who was standing to the side, said anxiously, "Hello, Director Li. I’ll take you to see the patient."
"Alright."
With that, they led Director Li into the house.
Director Li took Jiang Guoqiang’s pulse, listened with his stethoscope, then stood up and said to Pan Lanfang, "It’s nothing serious. Acute bronchitis with a minor infection. I’ll prescribe three days of medicine. He should be mostly better after finishing it."
Pan Lanfang breathed a sigh of relief and thanked him profusely.
Director Li wrote out a prescription and added a few words of caution.
Lu Fan took the prescription and said to Pan Lanfang, "Ma’am, I’ll go into town to get the medicine. You take good care of Sir."
Pan Lanfang grabbed his hand, her heart filled with gratitude. "Oh, Xiaolu, how can we old folks ever thank you enough?"
"Ma’am, please don’t say that. You should go back inside and take care of Sir. I’ll be back in a little while." Lu Fan smiled. "Besides, I’m still craving those bundles of vegetables you have."
"Don’t you worry. This time, I’ll make sure you eat your fill," Pan Lanfang said with certainty.
And with that, Lu Fan and Director Li left.
After going to town, he got all the medicine, bought a bag of fruit and some nutritional supplements, and only then did he return to Qingshan Village.
When he returned to the Jiang Family’s home, Pan Lanfang took the medicine and started to thank him again, but Lu Fan stopped her. "Ma’am, please stop thanking me over and over. There’s no need to be so formal between us."
Pan Lanfang looked at him, her eyes turning red. "Xiaolu, you’re truly a good person."
Although they had only met twice, she felt a sense of familiarity with him.
She even felt reluctant to let Lu Fan leave.
After all, besides Jiang Guoqiang, there was no one else in this house willing to chat with her.
Lu Fan stayed at the Jiang Family home for the whole afternoon. He had Pan Lanfang take care of Jiang Guoqiang while he helped out with some chores in the yard.
He didn’t get up to leave until it was almost dark.
Pan Lanfang walked him to the door, holding his hand. "Xiaolu, come visit often."
Jiang Guoqiang also got out of bed. "Xiaolu, thank you so much for this."
"Don’t worry, Ma’am. I’ll definitely visit often."
Then, Lu Fan looked at Jiang Guoqiang and said, "Sir, please rest and get well. I’ll come see you both whenever I have time."
"Alright! It’s a deal."
And with that, Lu Fan drove away.
As Pan Lanfang and Jiang Guoqiang watched him leave, their hearts were filled with gratitude.
"That young man... he’s really something else." This was Pan Lanfang’s assessment of Lu Fan.
...
「Meanwhile, at nine o’clock that night.」
At Jinling Institute of Technology, Jiang Sifan was still in his studio, reconciling accounts.
Business had picked up recently, and with Wen Wan taking the day off for personal reasons, he had been busy all by himself until just now, finally getting today’s books in order.
He stretched, and just as he was about to pack up and head back to his dorm, his phone suddenly rang.
He picked it up and saw it was a call from He Lingyi.
He pressed the answer button, but before he could say a word, a suppressed sob came from the other end of the line.
"Brother Sifan..." He Lingyi’s voice was hoarse and thick with nasality, clear signs that she had been crying for a long time.
Jiang Sifan’s heart clenched. "What’s wrong? What happened?"
He Lingyi sniffled, then said between sobs, "I... I bombed my monthly exam."
"What did you score?"
"I only... I only got a sixty in math." After she said it, her crying grew louder. "Last time I at least got a seventy-something, and now I’ve dropped by more than ten points! With grades like this, what’s the point of even trying for college? I should just drop out and go work in a factory! SOB SOB SOB..."
Jiang Sifan quickly gathered his thoughts and tried to comfort her. "Don’t cry. One monthly exam doesn’t mean anything. Didn’t you improve last time? Maybe you just weren’t in the right state of mind for this one."
He Lingyi’s voice was full of frustration and despair. "I study until midnight every night and never go out on weekends, but my grades just won’t improve. Brother Sifan, am I really that stupid?"
"You’re not stupid," Jiang Sifan said decisively. "I’ve tutored you before. You have a quick mind. Your fundamentals just aren’t solid enough. That’s how senior year is. The more you rush, the more problems you’ll have. You can’t have a breakthrough without a strong foundation."
On the other end of the line, He Lingyi just kept weeping without saying anything back.
Jiang Sifan then asked, "So where did you lose points this time? Was it the big problems at the end that you couldn’t do at all, or did you get too many of the smaller questions at the beginning wrong?"
He Lingyi replied in a small, guilty voice, "B-Both... There were several big problems at the end where I had no idea what to do, and I also got a bunch of the multiple-choice questions at the beginning wrong. When I got the test paper, my hands were shaking, and my mind just went blank. I couldn’t remember anything."
Jiang Sifan sighed. "You’re under too much pressure. The more nervous you are during a test, the more likely you are to make mistakes."
"I know, but I can’t control it." He Lingyi’s voice was choked with tears again. "Whenever I think of the hopeful look in my mom’s eyes, or about not letting you down, or how close the college entrance exams are getting, I get so nervous I can’t sleep. I studied until two in the morning last night, and I was dizzy when I woke up today."
Jiang Sifan was silent for a moment, then asked, "Do you have the test with you right now?"
"Yes."
"Okay, take a picture of it and send it to me on WhatsApp. Tell me which problems you didn’t understand, and I’ll take a look for you."
A rustling sound came from the other end of the line, which was probably He Lingyi rummaging through her school bag.
A moment later, she sent Jiang Sifan a picture of the entire test.
Jiang Sifan gave the test a quick glance to gauge its difficulty. It seemed to be about the same level as the last monthly exam.
