Still, it was easy to get tripped up by some of the trick questions.
There wasn’t a huge difference between scoring a 60 and a 70, really. After all, getting just one multiple-choice question wrong cost five points.
But He Lingyi had such high expectations for herself right now. If her scores went down instead of up, her motivation would only continue to dwindle.
So, Jiang Sifan patiently spent over half an hour going over a few typical, fundamental problems she had gotten wrong.
As for the more complex problems at the end, it was impossible to explain them clearly in just a few words over the phone. They would have to wait until their weekend tutoring session to be sorted out.
He Lingyi’s voice finally sounded less dejected, though it was still a bit hoarse from crying.
"Brother Sifan, thank you," she said softly.
"It’s nothing." Jiang Sifan glanced at the time. It was almost ten. He urged her, "Get some sleep. You have class tomorrow."
He Lingyi hesitated for a moment, then suddenly asked, "Brother Sifan, can... can you come to my school to see me?"
Jiang Sifan froze for a second. "Now?" he asked.
"Not now," He Lingyi quickly replied. "Just... sometime in the next few days, whenever you’re free. I... I just want to talk to you in person. I’ve been under so much pressure lately, and I don’t really have anyone at school to talk to. I eat alone, study alone, walk back to my dorm alone every day..."
Her voice grew quieter and quieter, laced with an indescribable sense of grievance.
Jiang Sifan was hesitant.
’A girl, at night, meeting alone... No matter how you looked at it, it felt a little inappropriate.’
But He Lingyi’s voice softened again, taking on a pleading tone. "I know you’re busy. Just for a little while, okay? I promise I won’t take up too much of your time."
Hearing the cautiousness in her voice, Jiang Sifan’s heart softened.
He sighed and said, "Alright. I’ll head over tomorrow evening. But will you be able to get out?"
He Lingyi’s voice instantly brightened. "I can get out! I’ll call my mom beforehand and tell her I’m stressed and want to go to the corner store to buy something. I’ll have her ask my teacher for an hour off from evening self-study."
"Okay, send me the school’s address. I’ll call you when I get there."
"Okay! I’ll send it right now!" He Lingyi’s voice was full of excitement. "Brother Sifan, you’re the best!"
Jiang Sifan chuckled. "Alright, now go get some sleep. You have class tomorrow."
"Mhm, good night, Brother Sifan!"
"Good night."
After hanging up, Jiang Sifan looked at the address He Lingyi had sent to his phone and shook his head.
’The pressure on a high school senior really is immense.’
’It’s fine to go see her. I can bring her some materials and go over a few problems at the same time.’
He packed up his things, turned off the lights in his studio, and rode his bike back to the dorm.
...
The next evening, at seven o’clock, Jiang Sifan rode his electric scooter out of the university gates.
A bag was tied to the back seat, containing a few review books and his own notes from high school.
He had originally planned to go later, but He Lingyi had sent him several messages that afternoon asking what time he would arrive, so he had to leave early.
After riding for over twenty minutes, he arrived at the entrance of He Lingyi’s school.
He parked his scooter on the side of the road and sent her a message: "I’m here."
A few minutes later, a girl in a school uniform with her hair in a ponytail came running out of the school gates.
She was running in a bit of a hurry and was out of breath. The moment she saw Jiang Sifan, her eyes lit up, but they were still a little red-rimmed. It was obvious she had been crying a lot these past few days.
"Brother Sifan!" He Lingyi ran up to him and stood there, just looking at him. Her lips trembled as if she was about to cry again.
Jiang Sifan untied the bag from the back seat and handed it to her. "I brought you some materials and my old high school notes. They might be useful."
He Lingyi took the bag, clutching it to her chest, and said softly, "Thank you."
Jiang Sifan looked at her and asked, "Are you feeling any better today?"
He Lingyi shook her head, then nodded, and finally looked down. "A little better, but I still feel awful. I had insomnia again last night, and I was terrified just thinking about math class today."
Jiang Sifan comforted her, "It’s like that for all seniors. The pressure is intense, and it’s easy to break down. I broke down a few times back then, too."
He Lingyi looked up at him. "Really?"
"Really," Jiang Sifan said. "I bombed a practice exam once and hid in my dorm room crying all night."
He Lingyi stared blankly for a second, then let out a little laugh. "You cry, too?"
"I’m not a robot, of course I cry," Jiang Sifan said with a smile. "You have a good cry, and then you get back to studying the next day. It’s not a big deal."
He Lingyi gazed at him, her eyes shining. After a moment, she said suddenly, "Brother Sifan, you’re really a good person."
Her stare made Jiang Sifan a little uncomfortable. He averted his gaze and said, "Alright, you should head back inside. The dorms will be locking up soon."
He Lingyi clutched the materials and stood rooted to the spot. After a few seconds, she whispered, "I’m going in then."
"Yeah, go on."
He Lingyi took a few steps, then turned back to look at him and waved.
Jiang Sifan waved back.
But the next second, He Lingyi suddenly spun around, walked right up to Jiang Sifan, and threw her arms around him.
Jiang Sifan panicked.
’This is the school gate!’
’Fuck!’
