Chapter 423: Chapter 239: New Year’s Eve! Lu Fan Makes a Public Confession, and Jiang Sifan Accepts
He Lingyi tilted her head back to watch the fireworks, a huge smile on her face.
Jiang Sifan watched her, suddenly feeling that this moment was particularly beautiful.
When the fireworks ended, the crowd slowly began to disperse.
He Lingyi remained standing where she was, unwilling to leave.
She turned her head to look at Jiang Sifan, her eyes shining.
"Brother Sifan."
"Hm?"
She stood on her tiptoes and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.
It was light and fast, like a feather drifting onto the surface of the water.
Jiang Sifan froze.
He Lingyi’s face was flushed, but she kept her eyes on him and said seriously, "In the new year, I’ll be starting college, so you can’t treat me like a kid anymore. I’m an adult, just like you."
She took a deep breath, turned around, and shouted into the emptying square, "Brother Sifan! I like you!"
Her voice echoed in the night sky. The remaining crowd turned back, some laughing and clapping, others hooting, "Kiss! Kiss!"
Jiang Sifan stood there, his face burning.
He looked at He Lingyi. Her face was softened by the glow of the streetlights, her eyes were shining, and the corners of her mouth were turned up as if she had just accomplished something truly incredible.
His heart was pounding, and his mind was a mess.
He thought of Wen Wan, remembering the way she looked when she lowered her head and said, "Class Monitor, thank you for today."
He remembered the warm touch when He Lingyi had stood on her tiptoes to kiss his cheek.
He didn’t know who he should choose, but he knew that in this moment, he didn’t want to disappoint her.
He Lingyi turned back to him and said earnestly, "Brother Sifan, after the college entrance exams are over, can I be your girlfriend?"
Jiang Sifan stared at her for a long time.
Her eyes were shining.
He opened his mouth, but that one word tumbled in his throat several times before it came out.
"Okay."
He Lingyi froze for a second, then broke into a smile.
She smiled so happily her eyes curved into crescents.
She jumped up, threw her arms around his neck, and hung off him.
"This is great! Brother Sifan, you agreed! No take-backs!"
Jiang Sifan could barely breathe from her tight embrace, but he still managed a laugh. "No take-backs."
He Lingyi let go and stood before him, face flushed and eyes shining.
She took a deep breath and shouted at the sky, "I’m so happy!"
The fireworks were over, the crowd had dispersed, and the square was now empty.
He Lingyi walked beside him, her hands in her pockets, glancing at him from time to time.
"Brother Sifan."
"Hm?"
"Who did you come with tonight?"
Jiang Sifan paused. "How did you know I came with someone?"
He Lingyi smiled. "Just a guess. You didn’t reply to my messages tonight, so I figured you were busy."
Jiang Sifan didn’t say anything.
He Lingyi didn’t press him. Instead, she hopped onto the edge of a planter, holding her arms out for balance. "It doesn’t matter. In any case, you already said yes."
Watching her wobble, Jiang Sifan reached out to steady her. "Be careful."
He Lingyi grabbed his hand and jumped down, tilting her head up to look at him. "Brother Sifan."
"Hm?"
"Will you always be good to me?"
Jiang Sifan looked into her eyes and said earnestly, "I will."
He Lingyi smiled, took his hand, and started walking toward the school gate.
The streetlights stretched their two shadows long, making them overlap.
When they got back to the school gate, He Lingyi stopped and turned to face him.
She let go of his hand and pulled her scarf up, leaving only her eyes visible.
"Brother Sifan, I’m heading in."
Jiang Sifan nodded. "Go on. Get some sleep."
He Lingyi stood still, watching him for a few seconds before suddenly smiling.
She stood on her tiptoes and kissed him on the cheek again.
This time it wasn’t light. It was a real kiss, her soft, warm lips pressing against his cheek.
"Good night," she said, then turned and ran through the school gate.
Jiang Sifan remained where he was, watching her retreating figure for a long while.
He raised a hand to his cheek. The spot where she’d kissed him still felt a little hot.
He smiled to himself, stuffed his hands in his pockets, and turned to walk back.
