Chapter 447: Chapter 248: Lu Fan: Approving of This Daughter-in-Law, Settling on One
The next morning, Lu Fan was admiring the fishpond at his estate.
He had recently hired a designer to build this large pond before him.
It was mainly because Jiang Yixia enjoyed keeping small animals, so he planned to let her manage this pond in the future.
His screen lit up with an unknown number. He glanced at it and picked up.
The call had come just as he was pondering what to name one of the goldfish.
"Hello?"
After two seconds of silence, Mrs. Wen’s voice came through. "President Lu, I’ve made up my mind."
Lu Fan leaned back in his chair, watching the fish before him. "Go on."
"Four hundred thousand. I agree. When do we sign that... that agreement?" Mrs. Wen said directly.
Lu Fan glanced at the calendar on his desk, his tone calm. "This afternoon at three, at the Jinling Notary Office. I’ll arrange for a car to pick you up. Wen Wan and Sifan will be there as well. Do you agree?"
There were another few seconds of silence on the other end.
When Mrs. Wen’s voice came again, it held a choked sob. "She... She’s going too?"
"She’s a party to the matter. She has the right to be present."
Mrs. Wen didn’t say anything.
After a long moment, she finally spoke. "Alright."
After hanging up, Lu Fan leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes for a moment.
He picked up his phone and sent a message to Jiang Sifan.
Lu Fan: [Three p.m. this afternoon, Jinling Notary Office. Her mother agreed. Do you and Wen Wan want to come?]
He sent the message and got a reply in less than a minute.
Jiang Sifan: [Yes, we’ll be there.]
Lu Fan looked at the message and smiled.
He stood up, walked to the window, and looked out at the estate’s lawn.
The sun was bright, making the grass a vibrant green.
He stood there for a moment before turning and heading into his study.
In the workshop at the Jinling Institute of Technology, Jiang Sifan put down his phone and looked at Wen Wan.
The account book on the table was open, the pen lying beside it. Not a single word had been written.
"Wen Wan," Jiang Sifan said, looking at her.
Wen Wan looked up at him.
Even though Lu Fan had already resolved the issue, her gaze was distant, as if she hadn’t yet recovered from yesterday’s events.
Her lips were a little dry, and the faint tracks of dried tears were still on her face.
"My dad said your mom agreed. Three o’clock this afternoon, at the Jinling Notary Office. He asked if we want to go," Jiang Sifan said softly, as if seeking her opinion.
Wen Wan’s fingers tightened on the account book in her hands, her knuckles turning white.
Her lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but she swallowed the words back down.
She lowered her head and stared for a long time.
The light blue flower on the cover of the account book seemed exceptionally still in the sunlight.
"You don’t want to go?" Jiang Sifan asked.
Wen Wan was silent for a long time.
Her voice was quiet, as if squeezed from her throat. "I... I don’t know. I’m afraid to see her. I’m afraid I’ll go soft."
Jiang Sifan reached out and took her hand, squeezing it a little tighter, trying to share his warmth with her.
"I’ll go with you," Jiang Sifan explained. "No matter what happens, I’ll be right by your side."
Wen Wan looked up at him.
His eyes were bright and sincere, holding no hesitation, no trace of retreat.
Tears fell from her eyes again, but she didn’t cry out, only nodding forcefully.
"Okay." Wen Wan nodded. "Mhm."
At two-thirty in the afternoon, Chen He’s car pulled up in front of the workshop building right on time.
Lu Fan didn’t come; it was Chen He.
Wen Wan was silent the entire way.
She leaned against the car window. Jiang Sifan sat beside her, holding her hand, also silent.
Chen He glanced at them in the rearview mirror and drove steadily.
Wen Wan leaned against the window, closed her eyes, and seemed to fall asleep.
Her breathing was light and even, but her hand remained in Jiang Sifan’s, never letting go.
Jiang Sifan glanced at her, then gently guided her head to rest on his shoulder.
She shifted, found a comfortable position, and continued to sleep.
He caught the faint, jasmine-like scent of shampoo in her hair.
The car stopped at the entrance of the Jinling Notary Office.
Wen Wan woke up, rubbed her eyes, and looked out the window at the gray-white building.
She took a deep breath, then exhaled, her hand tightening around Jiang Sifan’s.
"Let’s go," Jiang Sifan gestured.
Wen Wan nodded and followed him out of the car.
The notary’s office was on the second floor. The hallway was long and carpeted in gray, muffling any sound of their footsteps.
The walls were white, adorned with a few landscape paintings. It was quiet—so quiet it was a little unsettling.
Wen Wan walked slowly, so Jiang Sifan slowed his pace to wait for her. They walked side-by-side to the office door.
The door was open. Lu Fan was already there.
He was sitting on one side of a long table, flipping through a document in his hand.
Beside him sat a middle-aged man in a suit—the notary. He wore gold-rimmed glasses and had a stern expression.
Mrs. Wen sat on the other side of the long table. She wasn’t wearing her bright red padded jacket today, having changed into a dark blue coat. Her hair was also combed a bit neater.
But her complexion was still terrible, her lips pale, and the bags under her eyes were heavy. It was clear she hadn’t slept all night.
She was nervous but also a little expectant. After all, who wouldn’t daydream a bit about getting 400,000 all at once?
Wen Wan stood at the doorway and glanced at Mrs. Wen.
Mrs. Wen looked up too. When she saw Wen Wan, her lips moved as if to speak, but she swallowed the words back down.
Her eyes instantly turned red, but she held back her tears, lowered her head again, and stared at the tabletop.
Wen Wan turned her face away and sat down next to Lu Fan.
Jiang Sifan sat next to Wen Wan, his hand still holding hers, not letting go.
Lu Fan glanced at them and nodded, then turned to the notary. "We can begin."
