The salesperson was a young woman with a high ponytail who spoke crisply.

“Sir, the Lavida is our best-seller. It’s sturdy and reliable, and maintenance is cheap. The out-the-door price is around one hundred and ten thousand yuan. If you don’t mind spending a little more, you can look at the Sagitar. It has more space and better features, for around one hundred and fifty thousand on the road.”

Jiang Sifan tested the Lavida, then the Sagitar. The Sagitar’s seats were genuine leather and very comfortable. The center console screen was larger, and the rear space was significantly roomier than the Lavida’s.

“Dad, the Sagitar is pretty good,” Jiang Sifan said.

Lu Fan looked at the car and nodded, but he didn’t say a word as he turned and left the showroom. Jiang Sifan followed him, feeling a bit uncertain about what he was thinking.

Wen Wan walked beside him and whispered, “Class President, does Uncle Lu think these cars aren’t good enough?”

Jiang Sifan gave a wry smile but didn’t reply.

The fourth dealership was BMW.

Jiang Sifan stood at the entrance, his footsteps faltering as he looked at the blue and white logo. “Dad, BMWs are too expensive.” He stood at the door, refusing to go in.

“It doesn’t cost anything just to look,” Lu Fan said cheerfully, pushing the door open and stepping inside. Jiang Sifan had no choice but to follow him.

The BMW showroom was much larger than the previous dealerships, with brighter lighting and a dark carpet that completely muffled their footsteps. Over a dozen cars were parked on the floor, ranging from the 1 Series to the 7 Series, and the X1 to the X5. Every single one was polished to a mirror shine, gleaming under the bright lights.

A male salesperson in a dark blue suit approached them. His smile was perfectly measured—professional and poised. “Hello, sir. Are you looking to buy a car? Would you like me to introduce some models to you?”

Lu Fan glanced at the 5 Series in the center of the showroom and walked over. It was a black 530Li. The body was long and sleek with smooth lines, an imposing and steadfast kidney grille, and sharp headlights.

The salesperson quickly followed him and introduced it. “This is the 5 Series, the 530Li Leading trim. It has a 2.0T high-output engine, 245 horsepower, a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive. The wheelbase is over 3.1 meters, so the rear space is incredibly spacious. The out-the-door price is around four hundred and fifty thousand.”

Lu Fan pulled open the car door and inspected the interior. It had brown leather seats, wood grain trim, and ambient lighting, and the rear had independent air conditioning vents and seat adjustments. He nodded and turned to look at Jiang Sifan. “Sifan, how about this one?”

In truth, it wouldn’t have been a problem for Lu Fan to buy Jiang Sifan a Porsche or even a Rolls-Royce. However, the kid would never agree to it, even if his life depended on it. Given that, a BMW 5 Series was probably the perfect fit.

Jiang Sifan stood next to the car, glancing at the black 5 Series and then at the salesperson. His face turned pale.

“Dad, this is way too expensive,” Jiang Sifan said, his voice cracking. “Four hundred and fifty thousand… My studio wouldn’t make that much in three years. I don’t want it.”

“I didn’t say you had to pay for it,” Lu Fan chuckled.

“That still won’t do.” Jiang Sifan shook his head resolutely. “What would it look like for a student like me to drive a 5 Series? How would my teachers and classmates see me if I drove this to school? No, no, absolutely not.”

Looking at his flustered appearance, Lu Fan laughed. He turned to the salesperson and said, “Let’s look at something else.”

The salesperson nodded and led them over to a white sedan nearby. Its body was a size smaller than the 5 Series, but the lines were more youthful, and the kidney grille had a sportier feel.

“This is the 3 Series, the 325Li M Sport Package,” the salesperson explained. “It has a 2.0T engine, 184 horsepower, a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive. This is the long-wheelbase version, so the rear space is also quite good—more than enough for family use. The out-the-door price is around three hundred and twenty thousand.”

Jiang Sifan hesitated for a moment before opening the door and getting inside. The steering wheel was the M Sport version, and it felt great in his hands. The dashboard was a single LCD screen with very crisp graphics. The center console screen was large and highly responsive. The seats were synthetic leather, complete with power adjustment and memory functions.

He stroked the steering wheel and looked at the center console, absolutely smitten. It was leaps and bounds better than the BYD, Corolla, and Sagitar they had just seen, though the price was also a massive step up.

“Do you like it?” Lu Fan asked, standing outside the car and watching him.

Jiang Sifan got out of the car. He looked at Lu Fan, then back at the white 3 Series, and muttered, “I like it, but three hundred and twenty thousand is still too expensive. A Sagitar is only one hundred and fifty thousand. We’d save more than half the money.”

“Do you really think a Sagitar drives the same as a 3 Series?” Lu Fan said with a smile. “You haven’t even test-driven it. How would you know the difference?”

The salesperson quickly chimed in, “Sir, we can arrange a test drive so you can take it for a spin and feel it for yourself.”

Jiang Sifan glanced at Lu Fan, who nodded.

The salesperson went to handle the test drive paperwork and brought the car out to the test route. Jiang Sifan got into the driver’s seat, adjusted the seat and rearview mirrors, and fastened his seatbelt. Gripping the steering wheel, he took a deep breath and started the engine.

The engine purred so softly it was almost inaudible.

He pressed the accelerator, and the car pulled smoothly out of the dealership. The steering was light yet precise, and the chassis felt incredibly solid. When driving over speed bumps, the jolts were barely noticeable. He drove for a bit and then tested the acceleration. The throttle response was instantaneous, giving a clear, satisfying push-back into the seat.

After completing the test route, Jiang Sifan parked the car back at the showroom entrance and killed the engine. He sat in the driver’s seat, his hands still gripping the steering wheel, reluctant to let go.

“How is it?” Lu Fan walked over, leaning against the car door as he looked at him.

Jiang Sifan was silent for a few seconds before sighing. “It drives great. A lot better than the Sagitar.”

“Then what are you hesitating for?” Lu Fan asked with a smile.

“It’s too expensive,” Jiang Sifan repeated, though his voice lacked its previous resolve.
