Every day after signing the order, Jiang Sifan felt that time passed incredibly slowly.

He had carefully folded the order slip and placed it under his pillow. Every night before going to sleep, he would take it out to look at it, and the first thing he did upon waking up in the morning was reach out to touch it. Gao Lao teased that he was like a miser guarding a gold bar. He didn’t retort, because Gao Lao was right; he really was guarding it.

On the afternoon of the third day, Jiang Sifan was in the studio organizing cardboard boxes for the move when his phone rang. He picked it up and saw an unknown number. His heart skipped a beat.

“Hello, is this Mr. Jiang Sifan?” a young man’s voice came from the other end of the line, carrying a professional politeness.

“Speaking.” Jiang Sifan set down the roll of tape in his hand.

“I’m Xiaozhou, the sales rep from the BMW dealership. The 325Li you ordered has arrived at the store and passed the PDI inspection. You can come over to pick it up anytime.”

Jiang Sifan’s hand trembled slightly as he gripped the phone. He took a deep breath, trying his best to make his voice sound calm. “Okay, I’ll head over tomorrow morning.”

“Great, I’ll be expecting you.”

After hanging up, Jiang Sifan sat on a cardboard box, staring blankly at his phone for a long time.

Wen Wan walked in from outside and saw him sitting there motionless. He had an indescribable expression on his face—it looked like joy, but also like nervousness.

“Sifan, what’s wrong?” Wen Wan asked.

Jiang Sifan looked up at her, a goofy grin slowly spreading across his face. “The car is here.”

Wen Wan paused for a moment before smiling as well. “Really? When are you going to pick it up?”

“Tomorrow morning.” Jiang Sifan stood up, paced around the studio, and then stopped. He turned back to Wen Wan. “Come with me.”

Wen Wan’s cheeks flushed slightly as she nodded. “Okay.”

Jiang Sifan picked up his phone and sent Chen He a message: “Uncle Chen, the car is here. I’m going to pick it up tomorrow morning. Are you free?”

Chen He replied quickly: “Yes, I’ll pick you up at the school gate at nine tomorrow.”

Jiang Sifan sent another message to Lu Fan: “Dad, the car is here. Going to pick it up tomorrow.”

Lu Fan replied with a single word: “Okay.”

Jiang Sifan looked at that “Okay” and smiled. He put his phone away and continued packing.

That night, Jiang Sifan lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep. He took the order slip out from under his pillow, stared at it repeatedly, and then put it back. Gao Lao’s snores rose and fell in the background, Qiu Zai was sleep-talking, and Brother Ming was watching a video with his earphones on.

He closed his eyes, his mind entirely occupied with visions of picking up the car tomorrow. The white 3 Series parked in the showroom, its paint gleaming under the lights. He would sit in the driver’s seat, gripping the steering wheel, with Wen Wan sitting in the passenger seat. He rolled over, pulled the blanket over his head, and forced himself to sleep.

Jiang Sifan woke up at seven-thirty the next morning. He took a shower, shaved, and changed into a clean white T-shirt and a pair of dark jeans. He looked at himself in the mirror. His hair was a bit long, but it looked fine. Leaving the dorm, he went to the cafeteria to buy two steamed buns and a cup of soy milk, eating as he walked.

Arriving at the ground floor of the girls’ dormitory, he sent Wen Wan a message: “Are you up?”

Wen Wan replied instantly: “Yes, getting dressed now.”

Jiang Sifan waited downstairs for a few minutes before Wen Wan came out. She was wearing a light pink dress, her hair flowing down her shoulders. She had applied light makeup and carried a white canvas tote bag.

“Let’s go,” Wen Wan said with a smile.

The two of them walked toward the school gate. Wen Wan walked beside him at a steady pace. Her arms hung by her sides, fingers slightly curled. Jiang Sifan reached out and held her hand. Wen Wan glanced at him without saying a word, but a smile touched the corners of her lips.

At the school gate, Chen He’s car was already parked and waiting. Seeing them approach, Chen He got out of the driver’s seat and opened the rear door.

“Morning, Uncle Chen,” Jiang Sifan said with a smile.

“Morning.” Chen He nodded. “The boss told me to accompany you to pick up the car.”

Jiang Sifan and Wen Wan got in. Chen He started the engine, and the car headed toward the auto mall. Sitting in the back seat, Jiang Sifan leaned against the window and watched the street scenes outside. Wen Wan sat next to him, her hands resting on her knees.

“Sifan, are you nervous?” Wen Wan asked softly.

“A little,” Jiang Sifan answered honestly. “After all, it’s my first time picking up a car.”

Wen Wan smiled, reaching out to give his hand a reassuring squeeze.

The car arrived at the entrance of the BMW dealership. Jiang Sifan stepped out and stood by the door, taking a deep breath. The glass doors of the showroom had been polished to a brilliant shine, reflecting his silhouette. He adjusted his collar and pushed the door open to step inside.

The sales rep, Xiaozhou, was already waiting at the entrance. Seeing them walk in, he greeted them with a smile, “Mr. Jiang, congratulations on your new car.”

He turned sideways to lead the way, guiding Jiang Sifan and Wen Wan toward the delivery area. Chen He followed behind, holding his phone, messaging someone unknown.

The delivery area was situated in a corner of the showroom, enclosed by glass to form an independent space. Jiang Sifan walked in and suddenly halted his steps.

The white 3 Series was parked right in the center. Its body had been polished to a dazzling shine, radiating a soft gleam under the lights. A large red bow was tied to the hood of the car, and a bouquet of fresh flowers sat on the roof—red roses and white lilies bundled together with a ribbon. A photographer in a suit stood nearby, holding a DSLR camera with the lens cap already removed.

Jiang Sifan was momentarily stunned. He turned to look at Xiaozhou. “This is…”

“President Lu arranged this,” Xiaozhou said with a smile. “He said this is your first car in life, so you should commemorate the moment.”

Jiang Sifan opened his mouth, unsure of what to say. He turned his head to look back at the white 3 Series, his eyes growing slightly red. He walked over and reached out to touch the red bow on the hood. The texture of the ribbon was excellent, smooth and silky to the touch.
