As they were talking, two girls approached from a short distance away.

Jiang Sifan glanced over, his smile fading slightly.

It was Huang Hui and her roommate.

Huang Hui was wearing a white T-shirt and a denim miniskirt. She held a book in one hand and was looking down at her phone.

Her roommate noticed the white BMW 3 Series first and tugged at Huang Hui’s sleeve.

“Huihui, look at that BMW. It’s so pretty.”

Huang Hui looked up, following her roommate’s pointing finger.

The white 3 Series was parked in front of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Building. The sunlight hit the paint, making it dazzlingly bright.

She took a glance and was about to look away when she suddenly saw Jiang Sifan standing next to the car.

Her footsteps faltered.

Jiang Sifan was wearing a white T-shirt, standing beside the car. Bathed in the sunlight, he looked clean-cut and energetic. Resting a hand on the car door, he was smiling as he chatted with the people beside him.

Huang Hui froze.

She remembered a few months ago, when she and Jiang Sifan were still together. Back then, he rode a beat-up electric scooter and wore a faded, washed-out hoodie, always flashing a goofy smile.

At that time, she thought he wasn’t good enough. She thought he was beneath her, and that she deserved someone better.

Looking at Jiang Sifan, the white 3 Series, and a blushing Wen Wan standing next to him, an indescribable feeling suddenly welled up in her heart.

Bitterness, regret, and resentment swirled together, a tangled mess of conflicting emotions.

She knew exactly what she had missed out on.

“Huihui, isn’t that Jiang Sifan?” her roommate whispered. “He drives a BMW now?”

Huang Hui didn’t say a word and turned to leave. Her roommate stared blankly for a second before hurrying after her.

Jiang Sifan saw Huang Hui’s retreating back as she walked away. He said nothing, simply turning back to continue his conversation with Gao Lao and the others.

That night, Jiang Sifan stepped out of the shower and sat on the edge of his bed, towel-drying his hair.

His phone buzzed. It was an unknown number. He picked it up.

“Hello?”

“Sifan, it’s me.” Huang Hui’s voice came through the line, tinged with a hint of nervousness and hesitation.

Jiang Sifan’s grip on the phone tightened, but he remained silent.

“Sifan, how… how have you been lately?” Huang Hui’s voice was soft.

“I’ve been good,” Jiang Sifan replied in a flat tone.

“I saw that you bought a car. A BMW. It’s really beautiful,” Huang Hui said. “You… you’re doing really well.”

“Yeah.”

There was a few seconds of silence on the other end. When Huang Hui spoke again, her voice carried a slight choke. “Sifan, I know I was wrong before. I shouldn’t have treated you like that. I… I’ve thought about it for a long time, and I realized I still can’t let you go. Can we…”

“No,” Jiang Sifan cut her off.

Huang Hui froze.

“I have a girlfriend,” Jiang Sifan said, his voice quiet but firm. “And even if I didn’t, I still wouldn’t get back together with you.”

Huang Hui fell silent for a moment before asking softly, “Is it Wen Wan?”

Jiang Sifan didn’t answer directly, only saying, “That’s none of your business.”

Huang Hui’s rapid, uneven breathing could be heard through the receiver. It took her several seconds to speak again, her voice slightly hoarse. “Sifan, I… I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have despised you for being poor, and I shouldn’t have dumped you for someone else. Only now do I realize how good you were to me.”

“That’s all in the past,” Jiang Sifan said. “Just live your own life.”

“Sifan…”

“I’m hanging up.” Jiang Sifan ended the call and tossed his phone onto the bed.

He sat on the edge of the mattress, staring at the floor for a while.

In the top bunk, Gao Lao was playing a video game, his keyboard clacking loudly. Out on the balcony, Qiu Zai was on the phone, his voice drifting in and out. Brother Ming was watching a video with his headphones on, the screen’s light flickering across his face.

Jiang Sifan placed his phone next to his pillow and lay down. He thought about what Huang Hui had said, but he felt absolutely nothing. He wasn’t intentionally suppressing his emotions; he had genuinely moved on.

When Huang Hui dumped him back then, it wasn’t that he wasn’t good enough—it was that she didn’t deserve him.

He rolled over, picked up his phone, and opened his photo album.

The pictures he had taken today were all there—photos of him with the car, him with Wen Wan, and Wen Wan sitting in the passenger seat. He selected a few and sent them to Jiang Silu, Jiang Yixia, and Lu Fan.

Jiang Silu replied quickly: [Congratulations, Brother! The car is so pretty! When I get back to Yangcheng, you have to take me for a spin!]

Smiling, Jiang Sifan replied with a simple “Okay.”

Jiang Yixia replied a little while later: [Congratulations on the new car. Having a car makes things convenient, but you still need to keep a low profile. Remember the principle of the fortunate yielding to the unfortunate—don’t flaunt it around campus. Since your dad bought this for you, you should make sure to buy him some gifts in return later on.]

Jiang Sifan looked at the message, nodded to himself, and replied: [I know, Mom.]

Lu Fan’s reply was the simplest, consisting of just a single word: [Good.]

Jiang Sifan stared at that “Good” and chuckled. He rolled over to face the wall and set his phone next to his pillow.

There was actually something weighing heavily on his mind, something he didn’t dare tell anyone. He had feelings for Wen Wan, but he also had feelings for He Lingyi. Wen Wan was the partner who had fought alongside him to build the studio; she was quiet and always considered his needs in everything she did.

He Lingyi, on the other hand, was vibrant and passionate; every time they met, she made his heart race.

He couldn’t let go of either of them.

He felt like he was no different from Lu Fan back in the day. When Lu Fan abandoned Jiang Yixia, he had hated the man for years. Now, he found himself in the exact same position. Faced with two girls, he couldn’t bear to hurt either of them.

It wasn’t that he wanted to hurt anyone; he just couldn’t bear to lose them. He couldn’t bear to see them disappointed or sad. Yet, this very indecision was a form of harm in itself.

He rolled over again and pulled the quilt over his head. Things couldn’t go on like this. He didn’t have the capacity to deal with this right now. The only solution was to focus on growing and strengthening his studio first.

Once he had enough power and confidence, he would properly face the situation.

He closed his eyes, his mind a chaotic mess, and eventually drifted off to sleep.

When Jiang Sifan woke up the next morning, sunlight was already squeezing through the gap in the curtains. He picked up his phone and checked the screen. There was one unread message from Wen Wan.

Jiang Sifan sat up in bed and stretched. Gao Lao was still asleep, Qiu Zai was snoring, but Brother Ming was already up, sitting at his desk and reading a book.

“Brother Ming, you’re up early,” Jiang Sifan noted.

“Couldn’t sleep,” Brother Ming replied without looking up.

Jiang Sifan climbed out of bed and went to the bathroom to wash up. After finishing, he changed his clothes and grabbed the car key from his desk. Hanging from it was a small blue miniature BMW keychain, a gift from the dealership.

He left the dorm, headed downstairs, and walked over to the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Building.

The white 3 Series was still parked in the same spot as yesterday. Although it had gathered a thin layer of dust, the paint still gleamed.

He walked over and pressed the key fob. The headlights flashed twice as the doors unlocked. He pulled the door open, slid into the seat, and started the engine.

The engine hummed quietly, and the LCD screen on the dashboard lit up, displaying a string of information. Sitting in the driver’s seat, he gripped the steering wheel and gazed out the window at the campus.

The sunlight was beautiful, reflecting off the white paint with a blinding brilliance.

He smiled, shifted into Drive, released the brake, and slowly pulled the car out of the parking space.
